In what represents a marked shift from the Republican campaign rhetoric of 2004 - where some George W. Bush advisors stoked anti-gay sentiment in an attempt to drive social conservatives to the polls - Steve Schmidt, senior campaign strategist for the McCain campaign, stopped by a Log Cabin Republican luncheon Thursday to welcome the group to the convention.

"I just wanted to take a second to come by and pay my respect and the campaign's respect to your organization and to your group," said Schmidt, who many view as the new architect of the Republican Party. "Your organization is an important one in the fabric of our party."

Do I not recall that "Dont Ask Dont Tell" became policy under a Democrat?

Correct. Now the Dems realize what a foolish policy it was and want it changed. The USA is the only major industrialized nation which kicks gays out of the military service.

I received this email from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. Here is what Republicans actually think and believe, behind all the smoke and mirrors:

Have you seen the Republican Party's platform position on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"?

It contains this plank:

"To protect our servicemen and women and ensure that America's Armed Forces remain the best in the world, we affirm the timeliness of those values, the benefits of traditional military culture, and the incompatibility of homosexuality with military service."

That's right -- this week at its national convention, the Republican Party once again made discrimination against lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members an official part of its vision for the United States.

McCain: feel free to vote and donate to the GOP, but we're not going to (publicly) support anything that is pro-gay right.

With all the bigots and closeted gay men in the Republican Party,
how could anyone but the most self-loathing, be a member of the Log Cabin Republicans?

How could anyone, indeed!! They're like the kid that wants to be the best friend of the guys that beat the crap out of him every day after school!

Being gay and being a Log Cabin Republican is like sleeping with the enemy. You'd better sleep with one eye always open.

Steve Schmidt is just searching for "entertainment" for the Republican Convention after-parties.
