That's it for the Republican National Convention, and that's it for Convention Season as a whole -- we'll all have to wait four more years for the circus to come back around again.

Could anyone dream up a one-two convention punch like this one, though? From Barack Obama's VP texting to the media camped out on Joe Biden's lawn to the Clinton drama (and yes -- catharsis) to the soaring spectacle of Invesco field, to the next-day bomb drop of John McCain's VP choice -- in the form of one helluva neutron bomb in Sarah Palin, who exploded on the national scene in all her wild and woolly Alaska glory, or at least as much as teams of reporters dispatched to Alaska have been able to dig up. Bristol! Levi! Troopergate! That speech! Mom, Moose-Hunter, Maverick! Barracuda! It almost made you forget there was a guy named John McCain...except for the fact that over 39 million people watched his speech last night -- topping Obama's record of the week before. Two words: Wow.

For me, I was just glad to be there and get a chance to soak it all up from the center of the action. I've still got tons of pictures to post (Jake Weisberg doing a heastand in the Oasis! Eugene Mirman kissing Jon Klein! Chad Hurley putting the moves on Henry Kissinger! Me and Rahm Emanuel! Okay, I know, now I'm just bragging. Me and Tommy Thompson?) -- so check this space over the weekend as I recuperate from caloric overload at the CNN Grill.

By now, journos, delegates and pols are catching the last flights out of Minneapolis (perhaps after one final annoying commute from St. Paul), and I just wanted to share one small farewell anecdote with you: As I hoisted my bags off the security conveyor belt and prepared to make a dash for my gate, I saw CBS' Rick Kaplan and NBC's David Gregory in the airport, walking along together and chatting. My reporter's instiinct kicked in, and I whipped out my camera like a weapon, ready to strike. But they looked so relaxed, finally escaping from two weeks of unrelenting coverage, and it was nice to see two rival networks strolling along, in the spirit of bipartisanship. So instead, I passed them and said hello, and made brief small talk, and went on my way. Then I shot 'em in the back, because like Sarah Palin, I like to toy with my quarry first.

Actually, as they retreated I realized they were probably the only two people in TV news who could make each other look normal-sized. So I snapped the picture -- not only as a fitting farewell shot for these crazy two weeks, but as a reminder that context and perspective are eveything. Without it, you can't always tell that, say, two guys walking together are actually giants, or, say, that someone reading a well-rehearsed speech off a teleprompter in front of a roaring crowd might not be. You can only realize it when you can see things in perspective, measure them up against each other, step back and see a fuller picture.

The pageantry of the conventions are now over, and now we get to pull back and see things in context, in frame set against each other, unscripted and engaging with the real world. That's how things work in the reality-based community, and for the next two months, that is where this race will be taking place. So - it will be interesting to see how everything looks -- in context.

Until then, I have only this to say: Oooh, barracuda!

That's it for the Republican National Convention, and that's it for Convention Season as a whole -- we'll all have to wait four more years for the circus to come back around again. Could anyone dream...

"The pageantry of the conventions are now over,"

The pageantry *is* over.

As our esteemed president would say:
"Is HuffPo's copy editors learning?"

You beat me to it. It is pretty glaring, isn't it?

Please don't use asterisks though. Or underscores. The "is" that you wrote as a correction just needed quotation marks. And the thing with underscores instead of dashes really gets to me.

Bah. I don't see the media jumping all over this:

Dem voter registrations surge nation-wide
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Democrats_post_big_gains_in_voter_0906.html

Nationwide, there are about 42 million registered Democrats and about 31 million Republicans, according to statistics compiled by The Associated Press....
The Democrats have posted big gains in many competitive states, including Nevada, New Hampshire, Iowa, Colorado and Florida...

Here's a good question for you Rachel...now that the convention is over, between now and November 4th, how many times to do you think Obama will play the race card?

Ohh, let's do a poll!

You know, I was predicting that too, but with all the blogging going on, turning up more dirt than a Massey Ferguson, I think it's curtains for Salmon Sal. Arianna (along with other progressive blogs) are proving to be a much more powerful factor than the corporate owned media memo machine would like to admit. And I think that's worrying the crap out of em. I'll carry the water for O and JO all day long, no big wup. Keep it up folks. The only way the media listens is when we scoop them or SHAME them into reporting. I believe the focus on her not being on the Sunday Funnies is a direct result of dedicated people like you and me and those three troll-ops reading this right now. GOTCHA!

i believe it has been said that happiness is a warm gun. and so it is with sarah palin. load her up with talking points, point her at the target and watch her shoot off her mouth. when done ... put her away out of sight until she's needed again.

Palin comes across as vicious and vacuous -- which is just how Republicans like their wimmen. I can't wait to see the cartoonists depict her as a pitbull -- one of the most vicious and stupid breeds out there -- but also highly trainable. It's so funny to hear the media pundits praising her just because she can read a speech on a teleprompter!

HEY!!! Pit bulls are some of the sweetest, most loyal dogs who will stand by their owners and yes, protect them. It's only those dogs who are owned by cruel-minded DBs who train them up for attack through fear and punishment that make the news, and this tarnishes their reputation. Blame the deed, not the breed!

The height of hypocracy was the obviously politically motivated vote grab, that was the only possible intention of choosing Palin as a running mate, and then to have all the signs reading "Country First" as the theme for the night of her introduction. What a joke.

"Islamic Terrorism is an insult to terrorists", Rudy Giuliani's genius log-line of the RNC convention managed to alienate a billion people in just five seconds. Guess what GOP, a lot of "them" live here. A lot of "them" are US citizens. A lot of "them" vote.

Are you saying that a lot of Islamic terrorist live and vote in America?!
What Giuliani said was "they insult the Islamic terrorist", not Islamic nations. You may not know it, but those are two VERY different things.

With all the Democratic voter fraud going on even Bin Laden will be able to cast his vote for the Dems. To paraphrase Bill Maher, I kid the Dems.

Please revisit this. See how smoothly that bigotry goes down? A lot of Islamic people live and vote in the U.S., and Giuliani is saying "They" are an insult to terrorists.

You have to see this clip to believe it. He repeats himself to be sure there is no mistake. See it here: http://thinkprogress.org/2008/09/03/giuliani-islamic/03/

Can we have a comment on this story from Sarah "Voice of God" Palin?

McCain ties may upset abortion foes
By RYAN GRIM | 9/5/08 3:53 PM EST

John McCain"s wife has held ownership interests in two Arizona medical buildings that rent space to companies involved in the destruction of human embryos found to have genetic defects " a practice some anti-abortion activists say amounts to the taking of human life.

McCain"s financial disclosure forms show that Cindy McCain has invested more than $65,000 in Estrella Medical Plaza I. Estrella rents space to Arizona Reproductive Medicine Specialists and Sonora Quest Laboratories. Dr. Kimball Pomeroy of ARMS said that if his firm discovers that an embryo was affected by a serious disease, "in most cases, it would be discarded." A brochure for Sonora Quest says that "if a birth defect is found, your doctor or a genetic counselor will help you make decisions in the best interest of you, your family and your baby."

Sarah represents everything that a good liberal should believe in. A Mother forced to work to make ends meet. Raising five children with her union husband. One child, special needs. Only one problem ... she's a conservative out of the Reagan wing of the party. Be afraid people because wait until the women of America realize that there is a whole lot more to women's rights than Abortion. It is the Republican party that is breaking the glass ceiling for women. Ask, Sandra Day O'Conner, Conde Rice, and ... Hillary Clinton.

So true =)

Let's compare the women you mention:
Sandra Day O'Connor: BA, Stanford; Stanford Law, distinguished AZ legal career, Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, Currently Chancellor of the College of William & Mary
Condoleeza Rice: BA , Phi Beta Kappa University of Denver; MA University of Notre Dame; Provost Stanford University, Head of the NSA; Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton: Valedictorian, Wellesley University; School of Law, Yale University, First Lady Of Arkansas, First Lady of Untied States, distinguished lawyer, U.S. Senator from NY(pop. 19M) won 18M primary votes in incredibly hard fought national primary contest lasting 17 months.

Now, Sarah Palin:
Palin spent her first college semester at Hawaii Pacific College, transferring in 1983 to North Idaho College and then to the University of Idaho. She attended Matanuska-Susitna College in Alaska for one term, returning to the University of Idaho to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism, graduating in 1987.
No academic distinctions, no advanced degree.
Runner-up Miss Alaska; Mayor of Wassila, pop. under 10K, left town $23M in debt to become governor of 47th largest state, pop. 670,000.
Being a feminist requires the discernment to weigh the accomplishments & experience of woman as individuals. The ceiling over Ms. Palin's head is not a result of prejudice or sexism, it is her mediocrity. A man with this background would fare not better in the estimation of voters who want the best and the brightest running the country.

You be afraid because the world is learning that there is more to being pro-life than restricting abortions.

Republican hypocracy is highlighted by the fact it supports a platform that is against programs that benefit single mothers under the umbrella of opposing big gov and pushes the abolishment of the Federal education department that affords opportunity to single women who chose life to educate themselves and get a better job.

Your pathetic attempt to describe a good liberal only shows how little you know about your own party.

The red, white and blue balloon drop was nice at the RNC.
I was kinda hoping it would have been golf balls. Them being the country club set and all, but maybe that wouldn't have worked out so well. For 2012 , I think it could be a definite possiblity though. Just a thought.
But it was real super nice anyway.

A real woman who would have the guts to talk about the issues facing America would be a lot more reassuring. We have yet to hear a single foreign policy opinion out of her mouth or anything that is not a canned speech. So far we don't know what she thinks about the world, when the Republicans claiming the strength on national security -- why is this not troubling you?
