John McCain taped an interview with Bob Schieffer on CBS's Face the Nation. CBS sent out these excerpts from the interview.

McCain On Putting Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac In A Conservatorship

I think it has to be done, Bob. I think that we've got to keep people in their homes. There's got to be restructuring, there's got to be reorganization, and there's got to be some confidence that we've stopped this downward spiral. It's hard, it's tough, but it's also the classic example of why we need change in Washington. It's an example of cronyism, special interest, lobbyists, a quasi-governmental organization where the executives were making hundreds of--some billion dollars a year while things were going downhill, going to hell in a hand-basket. This is the kind of cronyism, corruption, that's made people so justifiably angry. I did have a long conversation with Secretary Paulson--a man I admire and respect-- and he did say, that when the housing market starts back up, and it will, it will in America--then the taxpayers are going to be the first to be paid off. They're the ones that are going to be reimbursed when the values of their homes start, hit bottom and start back up, and they start getting more money back in. And that has to be in it, a vital part of it. And again, this is a system that cries out for reform.

McCain On Putting Democrats In His Cabinet

Sure....I don't know how many, but I can tell you, with all due respect to previous administrations. It is not going to be a single, 'well we have a Democrat now.' It's going to be the best people in America, the smartest people in America. So many of these problems we face--for example, energy independence, what's Partisan about that? In other words, we've got to have people who are the best and the brightest, and I'll tell you, some of them I'll ask to work for a dollar a year.

I watched the "interview." Seriously, if Bob Schieffer could have lobbed any softer questions to McCain the two men might have been mistaken for kissin' cousins. That was so far off from real journalism - Shieffer should be ashamed and he should apologize to the viewers, and to the nation.
I also watched Obama's interview with Stephanopolous which I thought was harsh in comparison. However both candidates should be prepared for the challenge.

Of course, we all remember that Bob Schieffer (his brother is with the State Dept. as an ambassador) (can you imagine the screeching that would go on if this was a Democrat and his brother in the same situation?) is a rock-ribbed Republican ..... Like Brokaw, and .... a cast of thousands at Fox.
Probably Stephanopolous too, his wife is a Republican ...

He won't release his full military records because it would show that he killed 130 men on the aircraft carrier because he was fooling around and trying to show off. I would like to see a mental status exam done on him. That should be a prerequiste for him not only because of his age but also because of his POW status. This man votes against helping the vets of our era and has the gaul to stand in front of them and say otherwise. This man's hypocrasy on all issues makes my blood boil and his presence on stage makes my skin crawl.

I'm not a regular viewer of Face The Nation, but I was interested to see John McCain's appearance this morning, thinking that he would get a question or two about his choice of Palin and why she won't talk to the media. What a disappointment. This is the show on which Palin will appear when she finally is good and ready because they know it will be nothing more than a friendly chat.

AGAIN a flip flop for McCain.. just a month or so ago McCain was was saying that there should be no help from the government. That the market should fix itself and if people got themselves into this messthey should get themselves out. Sure, a major player in his campaign was the main person in getting deregulation of the banks and allowing this preditor lending to occur. Does he think the American people are stupid??? He must, I guess because the republican party are supporting this... well to me they are blind, but believe me I am not. He is so incredibly two-faced. No matter what he promises now, you could never believe that is what he would do when in office. It would be another 4 years of the same. Tax breaks for the very rich and oil companies and charging the middle class to pay for it all. AND for bipartisanship... Heaven help us if he puts that traitor Leiberman in. I wonder what L is going to do when OBAMA/Biden wins and he is left out there all by himself. OBAMA/BIDEN '08

"Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents."

"While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city. As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today"s surplus, borrow for needs."

OHMYGAWD! If this is the case, America is going to find out the real Sarah Palin if the MSM has its way. She's avoiding interviews for now, and people who blindly defends this woman try to justify this decision. But the truth about who she is will come out. She HAS to come out and defend herself without the help of her Rove-Bush-Cheney cronies. And they will ask the tough questions, so the "barracuda" better be prepared.

There is a rumor that Rove Clowns might pull one of those interviews where Palin is going to be wearing an ear piece and answer the questions as she is told through the ear piece. They pulled this trick with Bush and they were successfull.

I was looking on You tube and saw this video. I think that you all should look at this. Remember when John McCain said that they were going to scale back the Republican National Convention while the hurricane was coming? Well it appears that they did not really scale back as ABC shows that they continued to party and meet with their lobbyist friends, and get drunk ,and just show no kind of empathy for what was going on with the lives of the people in New Orleans. I think this is a clear display of how out of touch the people in the republican party really are!!

the clip that the Daily show juxtaposing the Bush 200 campaign jingoism
with the McCain slogans was hilarious in the similitude.
That is it would be funny if it wasn't so serious.

George McCain is not going to change his party.
Even if he wanted too, which is more than a little suspect.

Palin is no reformer since she ran Ted "Indicted" Stevens' soft money 527 fund and hired Jack "Off to Jail" Abramoff's protege to suck pork from Washington.

BTW did you see the clips from her church?
I Hope this makes you feel better.

Ha, the best and smartest Americans in his cabinet? How can he make a statement like that? Doesn't that disqualify him right off the bat? What was he, 5th from the bottom of his class? Who thinks he had added to his intelligence over the years?

Oh by the way, when will anyone demand him to release his full military record? The Republicans demanded Kerry to do so in 04, which he did. It's time to see what McCain is hiding.

"5th from the bottom of his class? ? Who thinks he had added to his intelligence over the years?"

No one can add to intelligence over the years, it is the potential we have at birth. On the other hand, one can add to their knowledge and more importantly in McCain's place, their maturity. There is no doubt that McCain was a "jokester and trouble instigator" in his youthful immature years, but that does preclude the "wisdom" one gains as one matures.

We've seen his choice for VP. Such decision making doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

You're right about his military records. Being a POW has been much of his campaign, why not provide the rest of his Navy story?

bob, there's something called a follow up question.

A lesson that needs to be relearned in the MSM in general.

I think after JMC said "Seek the smartest and most intelligent people " the interviewer should have followed up by asking,Do you think then that you are smarter and more intelligent than Sen O?

You don't have to be the smartest person on the block to be an executive. Henry Ford once replied that he didn't have to know how to do everything in his company he only had to know which button to push on his intercom unit to get in touch with the qualified people he had hired to do the work.

Getting the smartest and most intelligent people on your staff shows an intelligence beyond what most of our liberal and conservative politicians have done so far.

I sincerely hope that the Obama campaign hits back hard and reminds the public that the two worst financial disasters to now befall the nation, the S &L crisis and now the bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, both occured under Republican adminstrations and John McCain's watch. In both situations, overderegulation of the markets played a huge part in creating the mess. And let us not forget that John McCain was part of the Keating Five who were in bed in Keating. John McCain voted along with all his Republican buddies to deregulate the financial markets and lower the capitalization requirements. When John McCain says he doesn't know much about economics, he is finally being straight with the American public. He's got the record to back that simple truth up!

And you can put good money on the fact that this was no coincidence, especially with a pending government bailout that will provide, as it did in the S&L crisis, investors with the largest transfer of wealth from poor to rich that this nation has ever seen. Of course, we didn't have a simultaneous energy crisis that is accomplishing the same thing at the time...

Given the fact that a cynical and self-serving John McCain tapped a running mate about whom he knew absolutely nothing, it cannot be a surprise that he wants to keep her wrapped at all times in a Steve Schmidt/Karl Rove canned speech.

Not having a personal relationship with Palin does not mean he did not know her. Her record is obvious and speaks for itself. Palin's success and achievements abound as a business person, a mayor, and as governor. what is more impressive is her willingness to take on those giants who could totally have destroyed her career . . . the corruption, the republican party, and nay-sayer. where most politicians wait for polls to decide where to lead people, Palin sees the right way and leads people in that direction.

McCain is made of the same fiber as Palin. He has risked his career on many occasions for what is right and went against what was popular. If that is self-seeking then I would wish that I were made of the same character and determination as McCain and Palin. Such people I admire, trust, and follow even into the jaws of hell if needed.

Our country needs these two great leaders for guiding our country into the next generation.

hey, i'd love to start hearing her achievements, but so far all of her "achievements" have been proven as malarky. the anecdotes she keeps repeating have been shot down. she's been exposed as somebody who relies on popular opinion to make her "maverick" decisions. she may have "taken on" the corruption that preceded her, but she's replacing that with a whole lot of corruption and scandal of her own.
