UPDATE: "Republican vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin is offering her first televised interview to ABC News in the coming week in Alaska," AP reports.

"A McCain-Palin adviser says an interview was offered to ABC's Charlie Gibson several days ago and that they expect it to happen in the latter part of the week in Alaska. Palin is the governor of Alaska and is expected to return home at midweek after more joint appearances with McCain."

ORIGINAL POST: It's been nine days since Gov. Sarah Palin was tapped to be John McCain's vice president, and the Alaska Republican has given nary an interview since then. Her absence was acutely felt this Sunday, as both presidential candidates and Sen. Joseph Biden took to the morning shows to plead their cases for election day.

Palin came up primarily in the context of her refusal to appear.

On NBC's Meet the Press, Biden told Tom Brokaw, "Eventually, she's going to have to sit in front of you like I'm doing and have done. Eventually, she's going to have to answer questions and not be sequestered. Eventually, she's going to have to answer on the record." Later, Brokaw told viewers he had reached out to the Delaware Democrat's Republican counterpart to no avail.

McCain, appearing on CBS's Face The Nation, was asked about Palin's absence as well. He hinted that his number two would be taking questions soon, but dismissed the inquiry with a humorous dig at the number of times he himself has gone on the show,

"We just finished the convention but within the next few days and I am strongly recommending that she come on Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer and that will be the first of her 65 appearances," said the Senator.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama, appearing on ABC's This Week, made a sly joke about Palin's eagerness to throw a political punch but shyness about taking press questions.

And then there was Rick Davis. McCain's campaign manager, appearing on the Fox New Channel, told Chris Wallace that Palin would not be subjected to reporters questions "until the point in time when she'll be treated with respect and deference."

Ripping the fourth estate for a perceived bias towards the Alaska Governor, Davis went on.

"She's not scared to answer questions," he said, "but you know what? We run our campaign not the news media... Sarah Palin will have the opportunity to speak to the American people. She will do interviews, but she'll do them on the terms and conditions" the campaign decides.

Days earlier, Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic reported that a McCain aide said it would be a while before the Governor is subjected to direct questions from the press. The campaign, Ambinder wrote, will "effectively deal with the media's complaints, and their on-the-record response to all this will be: 'Sarah Palin needs to spend time with the voters.'"

Said David Chalian, political director for ABC News, in a Politico story on the matter: "There's no doubt in my mind that the McCain campaign would like to run out on the clock on this."

Already, members of the press and Democratic activists are irked by the absence and trying to make political hay from it. Moveon.org has even started a clock tracking how long it has been since Palin fielded a question.

How hard is it to show up after the first presidential debate and give brief interviews supporting John McCain? It's the job of the nominated GOP VP to be the chief cheerleader for the top of the ticket. That's Sarah Palin, not Rudy Giuliani (the Republican who did show up and do the job of VP candidate). Joe Biden did it for Barack Obama. So where was Palin? What does this say about Palin's readiness to step in and take over the presidency if anything happens to a President John McCain?

The Media and Press are in control but they seem to be just playing along with the McCain-Palin hide-and-seek political game. If Palin can shut the media out, the media should simply turn the tables. With no exposure to her lies and exaggerations, she would be reduced to her natural element-a secretive example of political emptiness.

She has nothing to say

Don't worry as soon as the Rovians in charge of the McCain campaign are done Stepfordizing her she will be allowed to give interviews. Watch for the talking points that they are drilling into her head as we speak. She will be zombie like in her responses.

Charlie Gibson is the Gomer Pyle of journalism. His down home, aw shucks, I'm just folks attitude is disingenuous at best and always annoying. This is going to be softball alright, with underhand easy pitching. I'm sure that Mayor Palin will be prepared by proudly displaying a flag lapel pin.

He will bring the tabloid to with her sympathy with the audience. Disney/ABC will enjoy the ratings boost, weather the storm against the media and help John McCain who is surrounded by telecommunications lobbyists.

Not only will she do good in her first network appearance, she will scare the bejevers out of biden for their debate. Like in softball, if you focus on the next batter without getting the current batter out, you will make alot of mistakes and obama can greet president mccain as the senator from illinois. Don't quit your day job barrack.
10:11 PM on 09/09/2008
Oops, why do you have the word "softball" in your head? I think we all know what kind of interview Charlie Gibson's little chat will be. Ya think they'll film her through a gauze?
11:18 PM on 09/09/2008
I am quite sure she will do well in her first interview if Rick Davis says it is OK. I am not criticizing Palin , but gosh somehting is wrong here. If you don't or will not vote for Obama, at least seem intelligent and wait until the woman interviews, so you can make a smart choice. I hope ,if he looses ,he and his family go back to Chicago where he'll make tons of money, after all who cares about the issues.

Sarah Palin is not capable of handling a real interview with real questions. McCain's people are going to cover her up all the way, and if anybody asks her a question she can't answer (any one will do) they will claim the media is sexist and mean. It's the most obvious ploy in the world, and we need to POUNCE on it and let media anchors and pundits know that we don't buy it, and we expect them to do their jobs as they would with any make candidate. This soft touch nonsense was bad enough with Clinton. It was a mistake to let her people get away with the claim that interviewers were too rough with her, because now Palin is getting a free pass she has not earned.

Make no mistake, I am not AFRAID of Sarah Palin, I am insulted and angered by both her and the McCain campaign. This is a woman who as far as I am concerned has no business being in Government. She does not believe in Science, wants to teach creationism in our schools, has no regard for the environment, shoots defenseless animals from a helicopter with automatic weapons, she gave a speech at the convention of a group who wants to separate from the union of which her husband is a member. and as far as I can see is a Child user. I am not afraid of Sarah Palin,I am disgusted.

Tip for Obama strategists: Palin was one that voted for Alaska to be a sovereign nation, separate from the US. That is enough to say that she is a rogue, and wants her own thing and is not in it for the common interests of the American people.
And just think if it came out that Obama had those skeletons in his closet, and what kind of field day would come of it.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK...!!!! Be careful what you ask for....

She has more guts than both Obama and Biden put together. Biden reminds me of a sneaky car salesman, and Obama acts like one.

Shooting foxes from an airplane does not take a lot of guts. Answering tough, probing questions without prior coaching and without scripted replies from legitimate journalists takes a lot of guts

I would think that women would feel demeaned by the way that McCain is using Palin. He has her come out to throw a few cheap shots at Obama, and then locks her in the closet to shield her from the press. Is she fragile? Might she break? She is a candidate for VP of the USA ! If she is qualified for the position, she should be able to answer a few questions from the press. We ask no more of her than we do of any other candidate for national office.

i do feel demeaned by the way McCain is using Palin..my first reaction was "Gimmick"..unfortunately a lot of other women seem to be falling for it!
they are shielding her as much as possible I think for fear of her making a gross error between now and the election

She is secretly sequestered somewhere under White House with Cheney learning how to accidentally shoot that Democratic prosecutor who is investigating Palingate firing of her ex-bro-in-law and then keep it quiet for 24 hours in the interest of national security.

If this is all McCain could come up with..limited vetting of a person who has no business to be within 10 miles of the ability to set off nukes in the case of war...it shows us all what king of administration he will have. We have much to fear with McCain and his bellicosity approach to bomb, bomb Iran, Russia, and Syria. This guy is dangerous and certainly uneven.

Mrs. Huffington:

Why don't you put up youtube videos of interviews Mrs. Palin has already done--good and bad interviews--or is your site even more extreme than Fox ("fair and balanced")?

Believe it or not, she has actually--shock, horror!!--even participated in debates before. Why don't you post those videos, good and bad, as well as the debates by Joe Biden, good and bad?
10:31 AM on 09/09/2008
I don't think beauty(?) pageant debates actually count as a debate.
04:03 PM on 09/09/2008
You mean like the one where she said she didn't know what the Vice President does?
03:11 AM on 09/09/2008
SInce when did a candidate deserve to be treated with respect and deference? We want to know what she is about just in case there is one last LUB DUB. I hear there is a 20% chance that she may be Madam President and eventually have to show us how being a neighbor to Russia has enhanced her grasp on foreign relations.
05:35 AM on 09/09/2008
The biggest thing you need to know is she has a son going to Iraq. Her only son. Which means she'll end the war there as soon as possible, and not start a new war in some other part of the world.

Bush didn't have any kids in the military and, surprise, surprise, was flippant.

We need to know a whole lot more about Palin than her son is going to Iraq! We know that she thinks that God has sent the US on the mission in Iraq. Where else might God send the US under Palin? Iran? Russia? We don't know anything about her thoughts on foreigh policy, because McCain won't allow her to talk to us.

Having Charlie Gibson "interview" Palin is about one notch up from a FOX fair and balanced interview.

Example:

Charlie - Mayor Palin, I notice that you are wearing a flag lapel. Don't you think if Obama was patriotic he would wear one too?

Charlie - Mayor Palin, It's been said that since Obama didn't support the successful surge in Iraq, that he wasn't supporting the troops. Any thoughts on this?
05:38 AM on 09/09/2008
WTF are you talking about? Gibson and Stephanopoulos are the two moderators who were widely criticized for their "gotcha" journalism in the last year. Where were you?

Gibson will be trying to catch Palin into a gaffe just like the next reporter.
02:11 AM on 09/10/2008
I was there, and I watch these two. I see a definite right wing bias to ABC. That's why I think that they will go easy on Palin. That and because they were so widely panned for what happened to Obama. I think their FOX light and I'd stand by that statement. Expect no tough questions.
