UPDATE BELOW: PALIN RESPONDS

Actor Matt Damon spoke out on the Republicans' choice of hockey-mom Sarah Palin for VP. Damon compares her rise to a 'really bad Disney movie' and says it's absurd that this woman could become President.

"I think there's a really good chance Sarah Palin could become president, and I think that's a really scary thing... I think the pick was made for political purposes... Do the actuary tables and there's a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn't survive his first term and it'll be President Palin... It's like a really bad Disney movie. The hockey mom, you know, 'oh, I'm just a hockey mom'... and she's facing down President Putin... It's totally absurd... it's a really terrifying possibility... I need to know if she really think that dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago. I want to know that, I really do. Because she's gonna have the nuclear codes.
UPDATE: PALIN CAMP RESPONDS:
Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for Palin, called the comments "name-calling."

"It's not surprising that the Barack Obama and his celebrity supporters continue to tear down Governor Palin with little more than blatant name-calling," she said. "It's clear they're threatened by a candidate who actually has a record of achieving reform and change, while Barack Obama just talks about it."

I hope Joe Biden tears this ridiculous fool apart tomorrow.

I find it extremely interesting and telling that Gov. Palin's spokeswoman, Ms. Comella, did not address the direct concern regarding Palin's religious beliefs.

Why do they refuse to answer the damn question?!

"cause they can't justify it. In all probability, they are laughing at her behind closed doors....

If she really believes this crap, she shouldn't have gotten past high school science.

I am tired of the intellectually incurious/ignorant running our government.

BTW: Palin is the QUEEN of calling names.....I think she likens herself to a middle aged "mean girl."

What do dinosaurs have to do with anything?! It has to do with someone so IGNORANT as to believe that dinosaurs and people co-existed together being President! That is a scary prospect, almost as scary as having someone who believes in witches being our next President.

I approve of Mr Damon's choice to speak out, using the access his fame grants him. It is idiotic to compare his credibility to Palin's, because she is, in effect, running for President, and must be held to a far higher standard. As far as I can tell, such a standard is so far above her that she cannot see it, and she has no idea of seeking to attain it. Mr. Damon only has to deliver pleasing performances, and, when he speaks in proper person, maintain good manners. He does so; he meets the standard proper to his profession. Ms Palin can do the same, though I am not sure she has done the second part I mentioned. But that is a trivial standard for the office to which she aspires.

Matt Damon may just be an actor, but he's a pretty smart guy. I'm pretty sure that he went to Harvard.

What do dinosaurs have to do with anything? She has a college degree. She doesn't believe in foisting her religious views onto anyone. She wants to kick out corrupt politicians. Personally, I think we need a lot of new politicians in Washington. The ones that are there seem to have forgotten that they serve the people. The McCain pledge is Reform, Peace, Prosperity. What is there not to like about that pledge? Chicago is full of corruption, what did Obama do about it? Nothing!!

"She has a college degree." I have two degrees. You don't see me on the ticket, do you?

"She doesn't believe in foisting her religious views onto anyone." Except rape victims or people who might read books her invisible friend in the sky doesn't like. You'd be more accurate to say that she doesn't believe in foisting her religious views onto anyone who already agrees with her.

"She wants to kick out corrupt politicians." Then she should have resigned. She would have then been able to remove one corrupt politician.

"Personally, I think we need a lot of new politicians in Washington. The ones that are there seem to have forgotten that they serve the people." They're easy to identify: they have an "R" before their state name.

"The McCain pledge is Reform, Peace, Prosperity." And war is peace, freedom is slavery, and we have always been at war with Eurasia.

I don't think you get THE point.

The woman can't articulate her thoughts. Her credentials in foreign policy based on logistics and then she has the utter audacity to cite that as rationale. This is beyond stupidity.

Mr. Damon is accurate. This woman, if president, will have codes to attack a country. What will be the criteria she uses? She doesn't like the books they read? It is absurd. And McCain made this choice and he is as absurd as his behavior was this past week. I suspend my campaign, I suspend debate,,oops..I change my mind, I'll go after all. McCain should resign.

Palin, in my humble opinion, is eligible for impeachment now. She shouldn't be allowed within 100 miles of DC let alone sit in a big chair in the White House and spout marching orders for our military.

With Karl Rove floating around in the McCain campaign I wonder if this woman is purposedly sounding stupid so people will have the lowest possible expectations from her at her one on one with Biden when she will come out swinging.. I don't know if the people in Alaska are all dumb but I know people up there who are telling me she was almost a vicious debator during her race for governor and easily bested the other side on both style and content. Are we being set up????? I can't believe a college diploma now provides the level of information, discrimination and judgement she shows particularly after 5 years! If it is so then God help us....... or witches, whichever.

To think that this person who is clearly out of her league could be vice-president (never mind if she were to take over for the so-called "maverick"...) is completely insane...

I know nobody in this country cares what other humans on the planet think of us, which is really unfortunate and conducive to an isolationist position in the long run, but she is a perfect example of why the rest of humanity looks at us and says "What the F***?"

I agree with Matt Damon, it is like a really bad Disney movie, and to a certain extent, Disney is responsible for the Palin phenomenon. Disney's movies, as well as Hollywood's, have altered the way humans view the world since the boom of Hollywood, creating a sense of reality that just doesn't match up with what we live day-to-day. I love movies, but they must be thought about objectively and with coherence, just like a literary work or a painting or any other cultural object. These things should make us think, not numb our minds into believing what we "see."

Also, to think that a politician who has been in Washington for 26 years is going to change anything is really reaching for the stars... I mean, this guy couldn't convince his own party 8 years ago that he was a better choice than George W. Bush, why should Americans think he is going to be any better a president?

Judy, honey?

the minute she wants to restrict sex ed in schools; limit abortions; and teach creationism in schools SHE IS FOISTING HER RELIGIOUS BELIEFS ON US.

What part of that don't YOU get?

I am pro-choice...i am not forcing you to have an abortion--you don't want to have one, don't have one. However, if Palin has her way, I, should I need/want one, would not be allowed to-based on HER religious beliefs.

He college degree-a B.A. in communications is laughable, esp. when compared to the J.D. her counterpart has. Please-she's poorly educated. *I* have more advanced degrees than she does.
She, like W, is intellectually incurious and ignorant. ENOUGH OF IT ALREADY.

As for her wanting to kick out corrupt politicians? More crap keeps surfacing about her tenure as the Mayor and in Juneau-she may have to start by kicking out HERSELF.

step away from the kool-aid, dear...

If practiced birth control you wouldn't need one. It wasn't meant as a method of birth control. Now don't get me wrong, I do believe in abortion in the case of rape and incest.

you know...it must take so much energy for all of you liberals to be so angry all the time.

Here's something for all of you to think about...
Although I know it must be impossible for all of you to fathom that there are people, especially women, out there that don't share your liberal views...guess what...there are...and by the looks of the polls...lot's of them.

Please don't speak for me. I am a woman and I am NOT pro-choice. I strongly feel that the life of an unborn baby should rate more protection than a polar bear.

I happen to appreciate Sarah Palin's values. I also think that if you all had even the most basic knowledge of college level economics, you would understand that income redistribution is in fact socialism and devastating to our already suffering economy.

Educate yourselves and quit being so freakin angry about everything. Some people still have morals and values...and guess what...we have that right...just like you have the right to not have them.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:33 PM on 09/16/2008

But you want to take that right away. I do not want to take your rights away. One of the cornerstones of conservative philosophy is for LESS government involvement. Why do the republicans want to force their view of what "morals" are on people. I don't want this. The government should stay out of personal decisions. What gives government the right to dictate what is moral?

I'm not speaking for you. I don't want to take your right away to NOT have an abortion. But you want to take the right away to have an abortion. Do you not see that you want to limit the rights of others, not the other way around?

Liberals are not morally presumptuous and don't dictate what is and isn't moral.

Anyone who disagrees with a Republican and cites reasons and gives evidence why they disagree is labeled as "angry". Or the issue is completely diverted to something completely different such as the polar bear comment. Where on this board is anyone talking about polar bears?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:34 AM on 09/17/2008

So income redistribution is socialism - I agree. So accepting hundreds of millions in government earmarks (tax payer dollars) and putting it into pet projects is socialism, no?

How about deregulating an industry so they can manipulate their balance sheets any way they want and then cause massive declines in the market once these giants go bust. Then forcing the government (tax payers) to bail them out or suffer an even worse financial crisis. Is this not socialism? Is this not the result of Republican policy that has failed?

You should read some books besides those written by Sean Hannity. Even a good fiction book would be both entertaining and may open up your thought process a bit. Oh, and take some graduate level business classes. Some good case study's may help you sift through the information you read. Mix it up with a few science courses.

I will get you started. This piece is written by a Republican - from their point of view - so it helped me realize some things I was unaware of:

"I also think that if you all had even the most basic knowledge of college level economics, you would understand that income redistribution is in fact socialism and devastating to our already suffering economy." Does bailing out all these financial institutions count as socialism in your book? If so, you might want to look in the mirror to see what a socialist looks like.

"Some people still have morals and values...and guess what...we have that right...just like you have the right to not have them." The problem with people like you is that you don't believe others have the right not to have your morals. You think that your morality should become the law. Only two paragraphs earlier you demonstrated your hypocrisy. If you're opposed to abortion, then fine: don't have one. But your kind always think that if you're opposed to something, no one else should be allowed to do it. I get angry when other people tell me how I should live my life.

All you need to know about Republicans is something called reverse psychology. Everything they say about liberals is really what they think about themselves.

You liberals are all celebrities, yet Ronald and Arnold are their heros.
You liberals are so angry, yet the Republican Party is always turning to violence to solve their problems.
You liberals are so afraid, yet they are too afraid to let go of their guns.
You liberals want bigger government, yet they are the ones to expand the government.
You liberals want a free ride, yet they are the ones looking for corporate bailouts and government contracts for their businesses.
You liberals sin/have no morals, yet they sin/have no morals but it makes it OK since they ask for forgiveness. They don't actually try to stop sinning though.
You liberals think the government should regulate everything, yet they are the ones who want the government to regulate what a woman should do with her own body.
You liberals are sexist, yet they made sexist comments about Hilary throughout her entire campaign.
You liberals want a messiah, yet Sarah Palin was sent from God.

GREAT REPLY, mewcatone!!! How true, and so insightful....

just an additional thought:

The Republicans are always claiming they are PRO-LIFE. I hope when they meet their maker in their rapturous afterlife they can explain the "collateral damage" they wreaked on thousands of now DEAD or grievously wounded and innocent IRAQIS, AFGHANIS, and children who "got in the way" of their illegal war. Of course, I am being facetious. It's indefensible. And not even close to being PRO-LIFE.

Mewcatone, you forgot one. How about You liberals are all corrupt which is why so many republican politicians over the past 8 years ended up at the big house and so many others had to explain their lack of "virtue".

Does it matter if there are "women" out there that don't share the so-called liberal viewpoint? I'm sure there are plenty...the problem is that those who share your conservative close-minded viewpoint want everyone else to join in... If your against abortions don't ever get one, educate your daughters to never get one, thats it...

Everyone has their own moral convictions, let it be that way, i don't think anyone is asking you to change your viewpoint, just don't impose them on others...

If a woman so chooses to abort a pregnancy (which is extremely difficult to begin with) shouldn't she, and not a bunch of old, rich, white guys in Washington choose for her?

"so-called liberals" just want the WOMAN to have that option. And for the record I'm not condoning abortions as a form of birth control, but simply that women be afforded the opportunity for a safe environment where they, if they wish, can get one... I mean you guys can;t even see the deeply unsettling point of view that even in the situation of a rape, women shouldn't be given the option? Wow...

who is angry? conservatives are the one's who are angry... constantly blaming people for their ills... the liberal news media, the liberal sinners, give me a break... you people need to get off your moral high horse and let people be as they wish...

"I need to know if she really think that dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago. I want to know that, I really do"

Me too.

Will she ever answer this question? No. It will either destroy the "Creationist" support, or show those with higher mental functioning how stupid she is.

And let's not forget that she wants to make abortion illegal even in cases of rape and incest. I wonder how forcing a couple to raise the child of a rapist fits into the Republican "family values" platform.

The bottom line is that simply repeating Palin's stance on the issue is considered smearing. So according to the GOP no one is allowed to make her records as Governor public, and no one is allowed to mention her stance on any of the issues. I guess the GOP and Palin are trying to distance themselves from...themselves.

Oh, and let's not forget that her administration only used personal email addresses for state Business so in the event anyone decided to legally request all emails be reviewed it would blur the line as to whether it is invasion of privacy.

I guess no one in Hollywood should be allowed to state their opinion. Unless it is in favor of the GOP.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:32 AM on 09/29/2008

Judging by Palin, it might mean having children out of wedlock, and letting them run wild with drugs, drinking, and vandalism.

Judging by McCain, it might mean cheating on your disfigured wife with a beauty queen, and then divorcing her to marry the woman who's 20 years younger than you.

Whatever "family values" are, the Republicans sure aren't practicing it.
