WASHINGTON — Republican Rep. Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning Texas lawmaker who attracted a devoted following in the GOP primaries, said Wednesday he rejected an appeal to endorse John McCain's presidential bid.

Paul said the request came from Phil Gramm, the former McCain adviser and ex-senator whom the campaign jettisoned after he said the country was a "nation of whiners" about the economy. Gramm defeated Paul in the Republican primary for the Senate in 1984.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference, Paul said Gramm called him this week and told him, "You need to endorse McCain." The Texas congressman said he refused.

"The idea was that he would do less harm than the other candidate," Paul said.

Paul won no primaries in the Republican nomination contest but developed a strong following on the Internet.

He appeared at a news conference with three third-party candidates: independent Ralph Nader; former Georgia Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party candidate; and Chuck Baldwin, the Constitution Party candidate. Bob Barr, the Libertarian candidate, was invited but said at his own news conference later that he declined because Paul didn't endorse one candidate.

"We need today, now, 55 days before this election, bold, focused, specific leadership and that is not the amorphous kind that says any of the above or none of the above," Barr said.

Barr said he had asked Paul to join him as his running mate on the Libertarian Party ticket while his current running mate, Wayne Root would step aside. "We don't anticipate that he will," Barr said.

Earlier, Paul called the presidential elections a charade and said voters are faced with the "lesser of two evils."

The majority of Americans, about 60 percent, are unhappy with their choices in the race, Paul said. He urged the three third-party candidates to bring all their supporters together to vote against the "establishment candidates."

Paul, 73, a former doctor, ran for president as the Libertarian candidate in 1988. He is unopposed in the November race for his congressional seat.

Nader derided media focus on what he called "lipstickgate," referring to the bickering between the McCain and Barack Obama campaigns over whether a phrase Obama used was a sexist comment against Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

Nader, a consumer protection advocate, acknowledged differences among the third-party candidates such as government regulation of health and safety standards. But he added that he shares Paul's support for more opportunity in the political process for third-party candidates.

obama supporters: you ARE voting for the evil of two lessers.

he will not change foreign policy (just strategy).

he will not lead a repeal the Patriot Act

he will not lead a repeal of the FISA Act (that he voted for)

he will not abolish the Federal Reserve - to which he is beholden

Change?

Got any?

Do you think the ruling elite and the Military Industrial Complex takes chances on the elections?

you don't think they have this already "in the bag"

you think the MIC only uses Republicans to advance its agenda?

Obama AND McCain are handled by the MIC. Two sides of the same coin.

Eisenhower warned us - Eisenhower, a REPUBLICAN, explicitly warned us. Do you think he was just kidding? Do you think he was exaggerating? Do you think the MIC just faded away?

When I first heard that McCain's campaign was trying to get his endorsement (and list of supporters!) I sent an email to Dr. Paul's campaign asking him to please not "sell his sould to the GOP". I got a response the following day informing that Paul had no intention onf endorsing McCain!

Isn't it almost always the case that we have to choose between the lesser of two evils? Seems to me that that is the nature of politics. People are not perfect, and we have to choose which one we think will do the better job, and/or the least damage. Once in a while one candidate is clearly better, and I happen to think that is the case this time.

Ron Paul was one of only six Republican Representatives to refuse to give Bush a blank check to go to war with Iraq whenever he wanted to. A majority of the Democrats in the House also refused, but they couldn't block the GOP.

I sincerely agree. For the first time in my 63 years, I'll be able to vote FOR a candidate rather than choosing between the lesser of 2 evils.

I like Ron Paul and I believe in what he says. Im surprised to find out though that not many Republicans support his views. Its not that Ron is wrong. Its that Republicans are so ingrained into their party philosophy that they can't judge what's right and what's wrong.

I don't agree with his views about Obama and his economic policies are way off base for me. But other than that, I think his better than any of the republicans that ran for presidency this year. And his better than that hockey Mom from the north for sure.

Good on ya, Dr. Paul. I don't agree with many of his political positions, but he's an honest man and a million times better than Mc Ancient.

Guys lets get real about Paul and other libetarians. They are anti -war and anti tax. Without war to defend your country you have chaos. Without taxes to fund your country you have chaos.

These people are slackers.

My Polly Pockets little Niece introduced me to Presidential Candidate Ron Paul over Holiday Dinner in Scottsdale, AZ , how precocious. She really is quite intelligent, and so is Dr. Paul. This guy is "Smart" Smart. I'd still vote for Senator Barry Goldwater.

We're never going to get a third party candidate so we better find a way to get a better two party candidate. I'm not sure WHY Nadar nor Paul hasn't publicly endorsed Barack--maybe it's obvious. But they obviously don't support McCain. Lesser of two evils? What about Barack has shown any evil behavior? A part of me wants him to say to the public "you know what? Keep Bush, pick McCain, I'm outta here I don't need this." But he obviously believes he can make a positive difference and he sees an America that we USE to have (somewhere before 1975 probably) when we realized color is just a color, God loves everyone, civil and human rights were being made and women were looking forward to joining the workforce. Then Reagan, and then, all this.......the Bushes. And now, the word lipstick gets the focus, and, Bush and McCain want to keep us all in fear of another supposed attack that if it came we can't' do anything anyway--but what we can do, make this country better, is something we're just sitting on and waiting for McCain-Palin to flush what's already in the drains.

If Obama wanted to help his electoral chances & more importantly change the Country for the better, he would contact Dr.Paul & ask him for his suggestions on cutting wastefull & uselessGov. programs.

Paul is very strong & knowledgeable on this & Obama mentioned he is in favor of this in his aceptance speech in Denver.

This could be a win for Obma a win for Dr.Paul & a win for the taxpayer!
