NEW YORK — Barack Obama and former President Clinton talked for two hours on Thursday, their first meeting in a White House race that had once bitterly divided them. Clinton predicted that Obama will win the presidency "pretty handily."

Their conversation started with small talk about the former president's commute to his Harlem office and ended after a lunch of sandwiches, flatbread pizza and salad from Cosi.

"They discussed the campaign briefly, but mostly talked about how the world has changed since September 11, 2001," their spokesmen said in a joint statement. The meeting came on the seventh anniversary of the attacks and shortly before Obama was to visit Ground Zero with Republican presidential rival John McCain.

Reporters were allowed in at the beginning of the meeting in Clinton's 14th floor office, but the former president kept his answers short when he was asked about his involvement with Obama's campaign this fall. He noted an already announced trip Sept. 29 to Florida.

Obama said, "We're putting him to work."

Asked if he would be campaigning beyond that, Clinton said, "I've agreed to do a substantial number of things, whatever I'm asked to do."

Before reporters were ushered out, Clinton was asked where he sees the race between Obama and McCain.

"I predict that Senator Obama will win and win pretty handily," he said.

Obama interjected: "You can take it from the president of the United States. He knows a little something about politics."

Obama and Bill Clinton appeared less friendly toward each other at times during Obama's Democratic primary battle with Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. After Obama clinched the party's nomination, both Clintons gave strong speeches in Obama's favor during the party convention in Denver.

Obama's visit to Clinton's Harlem office, which overlooks Central Park, sparked excitement in the neighborhood, with people crowding around police barricades that shut off the block. The two men briefly appeared in front of the building, where a large group had been waiting for hours in hopes of a glimpse.

People screamed loudly and snapped cell phone pictures when the two emerged. Obama ducked back in the building with Clinton after a few waves but without shaking hands.

Their spokesmen said the two men were complimentary of each other's work, with Obama praising the Clinton Foundation, and Clinton applauding the candidate's campaign.

"They also spoke about what the next president can do to help make the economy work for all Americans, as it did under President Clinton, and ensure safety and prosperity far beyond the coming the election," their joint statement said.

I think it gives us a very good idea of what Clinton and Obama talked about. I think Obama is already doing some of these things or has the potential to successfully to others.

I'm not sure about the last suggestion though?

Obama just needs to tell everyone that Hillary has a Cabinet position ie.. Secretary of State or Attorney General. Wes Clark will be Secretary of Defense. Hillary will get a cabinet position that will prepare her for 2012. If Sarah Pathetic is elected as VP she will be the incumbent for the rethug. She will have more experience than Hillary as a Senator and she(Sarah) will have Karl Rove and his proteges spreparing her for 2012 because we all know that McSame will not run again as a 2 term Prez Karl Rove will see to this.

Look at the body language. Obama is engaging, looks Bill in the face several times. Bill NEVER looks at Obama, addresses just the press. Obama says, "We'll put him to work!" Clinton offers no followup. Sorry folks. Can't trust the Clintons. Never have. Never will.

Will Bill be bringing along the support of Marc Rich and Pincus Green, the criminals he pardoned? Marc was the key person in developing the speculation market for gas futures trading and during the embargo on Iraq the continued to trade with them. So, when you see the price of gas, you need to realize that the cause is the result of Marc and Pincus stealing your money.

Look at both their faces...real good. Now look at the title. Obama looks relieved, renewed and energized. Bill looks excited and says "Pretty handily"? Biden looked sad and questioned the solidness of their ticket. Biden is a gracious man, and all five (5) Obama, Bill, Hillary, Biden and Michelle wants what is best for the country.

Joe will step down and Hillary will step up and we will win pretty handily! Watch the dust; this game is not for the faint-at-heart...

Now we're bring chess pieces to this game instead of checkers!

I think it would be more harmful than helpful at this point to change running mates. It would make the Democratic ticket look weak, and it isn't weak. I very much respect Joe Biden, and I thought he was an absolutely great pick. It s true, we do eat our own, and that is why we lose, not because of who is running. Then we blame the candidate. YOu need to have faith in this ticket, and you need to get out there and volunteer for Obama/Biden.

Volunteer? I've done little else since June 2007 and I LIVE IN MICHIGAN WHERE WE DID NOT EVEN HAVE ANY CAMPAIGN OR REAL PRIMARY VOTE!

That said, why would we look weak; make a poor decision...make another one before it is too late. It's chess and the ones who count are the supporters of Barack, Biden and Hillary...who cares what the non-supporters think; do they care what we think.

It will be better than watching us all shake at the knees like they've doing all week. Look, it's time for Hillary to come in and put this pit out of her misery.

Kicking Hillary and her 18 million supporters to the curb may turn out to be a big mistake If Hillary did not want the VP job, she could have declined and Obama would have won favor with her supporters - a win, win for Obama.

John McCain has exploited "the women vote" big time, scored points with the ultra conservatives, even though Palin appears incompetent to run the country.

As someone who would have happily supported Hillary as I now do Barack, I have to ask you to please give it up.
If it's a "woman" thing, do as I've done and go work for a woman who is running for office AND STILL ON THE TICKET in your city or county or state. You'll help create more cracks in that ceiling.
Othewise, either get to work for Senator Obama .... or, if you are either that bitter or so inclined, the other guy.

Something better be done in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington and Florida and soon. Ohio has now slipped back into the McCain column. Pennsylvania, Michigan, Washington (Washington for Christ's sake!) are drifting that way and Florida has yet to embrace Obama at all. Nevada and New Mexico have rejoined the McCain camp, too. All I see is coverage of Palin and McCain negative ads. Saw Obama on Olberman the other night and he was boring. You're not a law school professor any more O, the American people want their answers short and sweet and without policy nuances. Save that for the cabinet meetings, if you ever get to have any. Somebody better kick start this mule as time is now running out, and fast.

*************VOLVOBIRKENSTOCK HELD HOSTAGE!--DAY 2***************

VolvoBirkenstock was banned and purged on 9-11. Coincidence? Perhaps. Perhaps not!

I believe VolvoBirkenstock is being detained in room #23 in the Ministry of Truth! Comrade O'Brien is probably working him over with his infamous rodent treatment even as we speak! I think that he believed that once VB was flushed down the Memory Hole, he would be all but forgotten here. NEVER!!!!!!

In the immortal words of Barack Obama, the leader of the opposition party:
"ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

i mention this because this kind of mistake cals everything else into question in an article:

how can clinton's office overlook central park when the office is on 125th street and central park's northern terminus is 110th? (but you can prob see the park from the office, so, however you look at it, clinton's office doesn't overlook the park completely.)

I am hopeful Clinton will help. While I believe Obama understands the issues and is smart, he is not the greatest communicator. He should have been speaking out LOUDLY about Palin, about the purely political choice of McCain, about McCain's shrewd political judgment that puts the country LAST, and then get back to the issues. What issue? We're spending l0 billion/month on Iraq. Money borrowed from the Chinese. What have we gotten for that money? All the easy oil we thought we'd get the people sure aren't seeing (maybe Cheney is, but who knows).

We are running this country off a cliff, period. Iraq war costs throw our economy out of balance, make it impossible to spend the money here at home where we need it desperately, and cause to fade like the Roman Empire...... overextended in constant war. End of USA as we know it.

This is critical stuff.

Make the issue, Obama! Or if Clinton has to do it, fine, but know in 4 years Hillary is the one we'll elect if you can't hit back harder.

Or if McCain is elected.... we can just forget what is left of USA. We'll be wholly owned subsidiary of China by then

Obama is a GREAT communicator...he has been said to be right up there with JKF, Reagan and Clinton. The problem with Obama is that he is a man of color...period. Thus, the rules for him are different than the rules for others. Obama has been put through the mill and back...vetted like no other person running for the POTUS (given how long he has been on the national front). Yet Palin comes out of nowhere and they are saying that people shouldn't be asking questions about her.

The thing is if Obama gets tough and goes after her, they GOP and media will twist and spin and say he is sexist...if he doesn't then he is weak. He can't win for loosing. It is the same crap they spun on him with HRC. I remember when Edwards was still in the race and he made a couple comments directed towards HRC...the next day the media said that he AND Obama ganged up on HRC...Obama didn't gang up on her...it was Edwards...but not one media person pointed that out!! No, not one. So Obama has to be very careful on how he handles Palin...look at the "lipstick" factor!!!

Thank you for saying this.....for some reason people just don't want to accept that it's all about COLOR! The rules that apply to JMC, Palin or any other WHITE person don't apply to Sen O. For over 20 mos. the country has gotten to know him, yet we keep hearing pundits say "Americans don't know him or he's not one of us". Palin has only been on the national scene for two weeks but somehow she's "one of us". Sen O is one of the most brilliant men of our time and it's so unfortunate that he has to work double to prove it.

Part color, but also partly due to an disjointed democratic message and an inability to form a winning strategy to counteract the republican strategies and to capitalize on republican mistakes ...

Because he is a great orator does not mean he is a great communicator. Being a great communicator is when you have the understanding and can convince the majority on an issue or policy. This is has nothing to do with color.

I saw it as Obama participated with Edwards to gang up on Hillary Clinton.

explain to me why you think hillary has to make the case for obama, when the fact is that the only one who can make the case for obama is obama. hillary was run out of town by the dnc, and now they are trying to pull the tar and feathers off her and act like it didnt happen.
