I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Vogue editor Anna Wintour is the international arbiter of fashion, recognized in an instant by her haircut and large sunglasses. But what does she really look like? Thanks to the strength of today's digital cameras and the below AP photo from Thursday's Tommy Hilfiger show, cropped several ways to show every pixel, now you can know.

Look:

Her right arm

And her left:

I would say how cruel this is - these close-ups are - until I remember that this woman is one of the principal voices behind the trend, nay, the insistence, on skinny young girls starving themselves to death just to try to look trendy.

Gorgeous Dress, Great Classic Bob. Looks like a fashion arbiter to me. Wow, guys...really? Arm close ups? Not sure whether it's more ageist or sexist? If she had spent kajillions on plastic surgery, would you be celebrating? Wow...REALLY?!?!?!?!?!

There are so many societies where women are respected and honored as they age. Did we miss that memo? In these photos, Anna looks like a woman who is aging -- maybe not as well as some and maybe a lot better than others. And she's doing it in style and apparently without filling her face with some toxin just to get a frozen but smoother face.

So let's give Anna her some props here. You know--she might just be thinking that every day above ground is a great one and f*#k the wrinkles. Sounds like a plan to me.

She's about 60 years old? The same age as Hillary Clinton. Wow.

That photographer will never work in the industry again. It was cruel of him or her to release this photograph.

She is an old lady. So what is wrong with that?

I think the point is this woman makes her living producing obscenely airbrushed and unrealistic images of women, and so these photos (based on the comments here) point out that, yes aging happens, but one can still be in good shape and well put together even if you're not an anorexic 15-year old from Bulgaria.

If the readers here think it is preferable to see "real" women, they why are they never in Ms. Wintour's magazine? (and certainly not on the cover; she even told Oprah she had to lose weight).

This is interesting to me. I read the text and it does not appear catty or insinuate anything, merely states that this is how Anna Wintour looks behind the iconic haircut and sunglasses. Seems to me that we each see what we want to see. We bring our own bias. Some focus on the jewels, some on the wrinkles, and some on her great shape and apparent lack of plastic surgery. I noticed how much she resembled my neighbor Barbara and that her blush was not blended.

She looks 10 years older than her 58 years. She can't be a smoker, can she?

I too appreciate the fact that Wintour, at 58, has not succumbed to the urge to visit plastic surgeons on a weekly basis. She looks fantastic, as active, vibrant, contributing individuals so often do. With 15-years as a make-up artist on my resume (and so many years ago :>), I quickly learned that beauty is not merely a matter of genetics or even conscientious personal care , but is also the result of attitude and experience, which in turn form character.

Another great 'beauty,' is Lynda Carter, plastic-surgery free for 56-years, and back on the road with sold out, rave review cabaret performances from coast-to-coast. Carter simply beams inner vitality and personal contentment.

Anna is a very smart, prescient, beautiful, stylish woman who has obviously not succumbed to the plastic surgeon's office. She looks fabulous! And her formidable publication keeps us all informed--and on our toes, if we choose to participate in the fashion rat race--of the vagaries of style.

Let her be!

Anna rocks.

This is in poor taste. To criticize a woman for her looks, who has made her career out of criticizing women for their looks, to protest the fact that she criticizes women for her looks is mind-bogglingly stupid.

This is part of the problem, not the solution.
Kill the Beauty Myth.
