The author of the book Sarah Palin reportedly tried to have removed from her hometown library blasted back Saturday evening, saying the Alaska Governor had a "small-town mind," was an enemy of intellectual freedom and a "disastrous choice" for vice president.

"I rather suspected one of my books might be the one she targeted," said Michael Willhoite, author of "Daddy's Roomate" and several other children's books. "I can tell you right now, Ms. Palin is a very good mother and everything. But she is my mortal enemy. She is one of the enemies of the First Amendment and I can hardly [organize] my thoughts here, I am so offended by this."

Reached by phone, Willhoite was ultimately not surprised he had once been Palin's target. In fact, he admitted to being "strangely flattered" that he was "on her list."

"I wasn't on Nixon's enemies list," he said, "I was too young for that."

After all, Willhiote has been at the center of religious conservative complaint ever since his work - which is about a young boy discussing his divorced father's new, gay roommate - was first published in 1989. The book was the no. 2 "most frequently challenged book" between 1990 and 2000, according to the American Library Association. But that didn't make him any less critical of Palin, who he saw as a dangerous politician, both on issues of press and literary freedoms as well as gay rights.

"I don't think Ms. Palin will care for me, but that is fine," said Willhoite, who is openly gay. "I don't really care for her, not at all. I think John McCain made a disastrous choice. Unfortunately she seems to be doing well in the polls but I would think the honeymoon period will be ending soon."

On Sunday, the New York Times fleshed out rumors that as mayor of Wasilla, Palin had asked the town's librarian to remove certain books from the library's shelves. Citing contemporary news accounts and witnesses - including Palin's predecessor, John Stein, and her former campaign manager, Laura Chase - the paper reported that:

[I]n 1995, Ms. Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues that she had noticed the book "Daddy's Roommate" on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase and Mr. Stein. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it.

"Sarah said she didn't need to read that stuff," Ms. Chase said. "It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn't even read it."

"I'm still proud of Sarah," she added, "but she scares the bejeebers out of me."

Palin, in an interview before the Times' article, dismissed the charge that she had fired the town's librarian for banning books as an "old wives' tale." The McCain campaign, too, has called the entire matter a smear attack on the vice presidential candidate.

"This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period," McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said.

Asked how he feels about his book being thrust back into the political fire 19 years after it first caused waves of outrage, Willhoite fancied himself quite fortunate.

"The fact is my book did very well in the first years of publication," he said, "and the lot of the reason it did as well as it did is because of the challenges from the right."

But Willhoite expressed a sense of shock that a vice presidential candidate could harbor such positions, even if he predicted that issues of books and censorship would no longer be on Palin's radar.

"To tell the truth I don't think it is something she will attend to," he said. "There will likely other more damaging things she will attend to. As a mayor of a small town she was attending a small town issue for small town minds. She has a small town mind, you see."

EuroRant, you make an excellent point. For a moment I was ashamed to be reading this junk, then I realized you read it , too. Thanks for the reality check.
The problem with America is that stupid ignorant people are doing most of breeding. Somehow, we need to get ahold of these bible belt babies and make, make, MAKE them understand!!!

She didn't target , he didn't lash back ,so what's up with the title of this article? Isn't there a lash missing?
He was flattered and " he conveyed a sense of shock" ,but I didn't read about a lash anywhere.
Did you sensationalize? We are trying to have the high moral ground on the republicans and if you sensationalize a title where there is no real evidence of the words in your title ,then we cant, have the high moral ground anymore -we become neocons in liberals clothing.
There's nothing wrong with a "sensitive" children's book being on a list of adult books in the library
off of the shelves so that kids don't stumble across it. Parent's can request it if they wish to let the child read it. The parent decides if child is ready for it,and also when and WHERE they choose to educate them about it.(by the way you are also assuming that " against " means the subject matter when it could be defensed as the venue or the placement).
There are plenty of other 'political' issues pressing issues like foreign policy and economics that concern the candidates . I would much rather see the space spent on the candidate we want , than on the candidate we don't.
I am hoping that Barack O'bama soundly defeats John McCain, but I don't think this article helps.

Saint or Sinner: banning ugly books and telling ugly LIES. The connection of the two does not make Palin a saint.

As a Small Town American, I am INSULTED and DISGUSTED beyond belief to be stereotyped into a group with the likes of Sarah Palin.
Not every person that lives in a small town has a small mind. This is one thing that I have accused the urban Republican establishment of--thinking we're just a bunch of hicks whose ideologies are those of the farthest right. Give us guns and beer--keep away the blacks and gays. Its makes my stomach turn to think that we are so terribly looked down upon. It blows my mind that these comments would have come from someone like Michael Willhoite.
I am completely taken aback. I don't know what else to say.

Jesus says "love one another as I have loved you".

Obviously Sarah Has a lot of love in her heart for pipeline producers and kids' books authors, not so much.

Your house is burning down around you ... and you're wondering whether the goldfish have been fed.

America faces historic debt, multiple war fronts, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, skyrocketing Federal spending, mortgage crises, bank foreclosures, an education system that cannot compete with other nations, 20,000 slaughtered on your streets by gun violence, etc. and the issue here is about a book informing a child about two men "loving" each other. Could someone explain this to me ... because I'm totally lost on the problem.

America could you do the rest of the world a favor ... GROW UP.

Agreed on all points. You will note that neither candidate has concrete plans to deal with any of the serious problems that you list. Also note that it is not the Repubs raising this book as an issue. It is their opposition instead, in their frenzied quest to discredit and smear Sarah Palin, blowing this whole thing out of proportion, Palin merely, once upon a time when she was mayor of a small town, inquired as to whether it might be possible to prevent a government funded library from disseminating homosexual propaganda, such as this book, to impressionable little children. And for that, they are attempting to villify her.

homosexual propaganda?? so childrens books that talk about a heterosexual relationship are then heterosexual propaganda? gay people exist, and have lives and families and make contributions to society just as straight people do. it isn't propaganda to to show people that there are many different kinds of families, it is simply reality. heterosexual families and relationships dominate our discussions as though they are all that exist. they aren't. we are all humans, we all live, love, eat, sleep, and have friends. the only thing that is different between us is who we fall in love with. you can't choose your attractions anymore than you can choose what race to be born into or what eye color to be born with. if you could choose who you love there would be no such thing as an unhappy marriage.

You took a cartoon in German and overdubbed it with English subtitles about the praises of Governor Sarah Palin???

The next time you have some extra time on you ... could you do us all a really big favor ... go down to your homeless shelter ...

there are some families there that need a place to sleep tonight, there are some children there that are hungry, there are some people there that were once your neighbours wondering where all the "christians" are - when it really counts.

Heed my words son ... McCain and Palin get in ... and in 2 to 4 years you will wonder what you were thinking to sing her praises.

I can only say this....Mr. Obama has shown to me an exemplary attribute that is both rare and necessary to lead. He does not foam, nor blather, nor exclaim upon hearing the pitiless wails of his enemies or indeed, even of his supporters. He has upon himself, from genetics or environment, the ability to save up his condemnation and rage. To stow it below, only to bring it out at times necessary. As nearly all great leaders have proven, whether within a family, out on a sporting duel, leading capital enterprise - weild one's strength, honor, dignity, and rage sparingly and decisively. The mere rarity of one's umbrage perks the fancy of all that hear, and remind them that their leader has things well in hand. Meanwhile, he quietly directs, purposefully inspects, and , with humor, corrects. Thank You Mr. Obama for the life you have led, the courage you inspire, and your unfailing ability to get up every day and get at the work that so many of us hope might be done on our behalf but have no means to accomplish.

Very inspiring. Thank you very much. Let us continue to pray for Sens. Obama and Biden. We have a prayer list on Obama's Website with 126 post names so far.

No offense, but why? This isn't a natural disaster or cancer or something. What is praying for Obama going to do? Nothing. Donating time, money, actually DOING SOMETHING YOURSELF is the only thing that's going to make a difference, not praying. Unless you're praying for John McCain to be struck by lightning, which I certainly hope isn't the sort of request God answers, what exactly do you expect God to do here? This is a very earthly matter, this is an ELECTION, and it is in the hands of men, not the hands of God.

"It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn't even read it."
The loudest critics are usually the people that don't read, hence least informed.

..It took me a couple of weeks to figure this out. Okay stick with me on this. Palin is not the object of attention that we should be focusing on, she was chosen to ignite the cultural wars which is definitely not in anybody's best interest. Forget about her right now. We need to pay attention to what former chairman Allan Greenspan is saying. America cannot afford McCain's tax plan. The poor and middle class already know we can't afford a McCain presidency. Okay the rich had it good for a while, but look at all of these banking institutions that are collapsing. Now the market is messing with the rich folks pockets. Believe it or not, McCain has lost a lot of support with the moderate republicans and the active military personnel with the pick of Palin. She is very polarizing and a lot of men wanted Mitt Romney just in case something happened to McCain. He may have cemented the rightwing of the party, but believe me the moderate republicans are steaming.

In related news, it is being reported that in her time as mayor Palin sought to ban all reruns of popular 80's sitcom "My Two Dads" and to legally prevent Paul Reiser and Greg Evigan from entering Wasilla city limits.

As an example of Sarah Palin's ignorance, she thought children read books at the library. They soc at libraries. As a retired teacher and librarian, I can testify that the books Palin hate collect dust on the shelves.
