MANCHESTER, N.H. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama asked his supporters Saturday to help with recovery from Hurricane Ike and canceled his plans to crack jokes on "Saturday Night Live" in the aftermath of the storm.

Obama didn't put aside his differences with Republican rival John McCain. In an outdoor rally attended by thousands, he discussed the "quiet storms that are taking place throughout America" as people lose their jobs, health care and pensions, and he argued that McCain is out of touch with those struggles.

His campaign criticized McCain in a new TV ad that notes the McCain campaign's ties to lobbyists in spite of McCain's pledge to end business as usual with the "special interests." The ad asks, "If seven of McCain's top advisers are lobbyists, who do you think will run his White House?"

The Republican National Committee called the ad an example of "cynical hypocrisy and outlandish attacks."

"Obama's campaign is riddled with former lobbyists and his running mate is a longtime fixture of the Washington establishment," RNC spokesman Alex Conant said in a statement.

Obama had been slated to appear in a skit on the NBC comedy show's season premiere, hosted by Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps. Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Obama decided it was no longer appropriate because of the devastation in Texas.

Obama and running mate Joe Biden had planned to campaign together at the rally in Manchester's Veteran's Memorial Park. But the campaign decided to scale back the event as the storm battered the Gulf Coast and canceled Biden's appearance.

Obama asked people to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers and be ready to help volunteer or donate to relief efforts.

"During times of need, we are all in it together, and it doesn't matter if we are Democrats or Republicans, black, white, Hispanic or Asian, we are there for each other in times of need," he said. "You will help them, I have confidence."

Obama spoke by telephone Friday with David Paulison, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Houston Mayor Bill White to get an update on the approaching hurricane. Obama spokeswoman Linda Douglass said the senator told White he would do whatever he can to help, including using his campaign Web site to raise funds for relief efforts.

Obama planned to return to Chicago after the New Hampshire rally and spend the rest of the weekend at home.

In an effort to offer transparency this election cycle & to make it harder for the Republicans to justify yet another theft of our votes, I urge you all to wear BLUE on election day to show you voted for Obama.

Help spread the word....

Great idea if we were living in a freer place, but we live in a place of rednecks with guns..many guns. We all know how trigger happy they can be, even when unprovoked.

So you have a lot of people walking around on the streets just shooting people? How odd. I haven't read a thing about that. What state?

I was at this rally, and if there is an enthusiasm gap or a problem with white older women or soccer moms, it was hard to tell. The rally was starting and the line to get in was around the block.

To Obama's credit the event began with an invocation that called on us to serve our neighbors in Texas by volunteering time or money, and when Obama began his speech, his first words were for the people living in the wake of the hurricane. He gave an update and reiterated the pastor's call for contributions and help for people of Texas.

He was in true Obama form this morning (calling for education reform from preK to college, renewable energy, focusing on healthcare and tax numbers that have been confirmed by independent sources). If this election starts to focus on the issues, he can win it, but even if it doesn't, he could still win it by the way he can get so many people fired up when he returns to what has worked. People left saying they felt the way they did in 1984 just before the RedSox won the series, hoping against hope and then it happened, but this time we are part of making it happen.

I agree - now is not the time to take the weekend off. By all means cancel SNL which would not be appropriate but now is not the time to take a day off. Its time to get out there - to emphasize your economic platform, your education and health care proposals. Personally I find all the whining about lobbyists to be a bit of a lost cause - time to tell the world what you stand for, its not time to take a day off the campaign trail.

Obama, enough with the politically correct behavior! Your campaign has been full of it.

There will likely be more hurricanes between now and Election Day. Are you going to scale back each time? Do you really think it makes Americans think you are more compassionate?

The best thing you can do for the victims of hurricanes and the voters of this country is campaign your heart out between now and Election Day.

Stop posturing. The "I'll start campaigning seriously tomorrow" opportunities are running out.

Why do you hate this guy so much? He's a decent, moral guy. Unlike your candidate who has the ethics and morals of an a l l e y c a t.

You just can't stand it that he has so much more class.

The John McCain campaign is sending out
FAULTY ABSENTEE VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS.

So far voters in Ohio, Virginia, and New Mexico have received them.

They may be trying to have you dropped from the voter registration list (i.e. "caging"),
but they are definitely trying to cause confusion with Democratic voters.

There is no evidence that the McCain campaign is sending absentee ballots to Republican voters.

If you get one...
DON'T USE IT!

YOU SHOULD HANG ON TO IT,
IT MAY BE USABLE AS EVIDENCE of ELECTION FRAUD
