LOS ANGELES — Joel and Ethan Coen scored their biggest opener to date by raking in $19.4 million in ticket sales for "Burn After Reading" and helping end a seven-week attendance slide at theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The madcap comedy starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malkovich raked in $7 million more than the writing-directing duo's last box-office hit, the 2004 comedy "The Ladykillers," according to box office tracker Media by Numbers.

"Burn After Reading's" success comes just a year after the brothers gained widespread acclaim for the drama "No Country for Old Men," which won four Academy Awards and grossed $73.3 million.

Their Oscar credentials and the star-studded cast combined to make "Burn After Reading" a hit, said Jack Foley, president of distribution for Focus Features.

"The Coens have broken into more commercial territory with this film," Foley said. "They've become more of a household name."

The weekend's three other new releases also turned in solid performances.

Writer-director Tyler Perry's "The Family That Preys," starring Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard in a drama about two families from different social classes, debuted at No. 2 with $18 million. Five out of six of Perry's films have opened at No. 1 or No. 2 on their opening weekends, said Steve Rothenberg, president of domestic distribution for Lionsgate.

Rothenberg said he expected "The Family that Preys" to continue to play well over upcoming weekends as Perry's movies typically do.

"It should have good legs," he said.

Overture Film's "Righteous Kill" opened at No. 3 with $16.5 million, proving that A-list stars Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino still draw fans. The movie played to a wide range of ages and both genders, said Kyle Davies, Overture's executive vice president of theatrical distribution.

"The primary appeal is to see these two legends together," he said.

Picturehouse's "The Women" _ starring Meg Ryan and Annette Bening in a remake of George Cukor's 1939 comedy-drama _ was No. 4 with $10.1 million.

The weekend's total box-office draw should surpass $100 million, breaking a seven-week slide in ticket revenue, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media by Numbers. Last weekend was the slowest moviegoing weekend in five years, with just $67.6 million.

He attributed the uptick to the variety in genres that studios offered this weekend.

"Audiences want a lot of choice," he said. "Each of these movies had a particular demographic. This was the cinematic equivalent of a magazine rack."

The next seven films in the top dozen were holdovers, grossing $4.3 million or less.

The Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" continued to rack up its gross with another $4 million, for total box office revenue of $517.7 million to date.

Last weekend's top-ranked "Bangkok Dangerous" starring Nicolas Cage dropped to eighth place with $2.4 million.

The top 12 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, as estimated by Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Burn After Reading," $19.4 million.

2. "Tyler Perry's The Family that Preys," $18.0 million.

3. "Righteous Kill," $16.5 million.

4. "The Women," $10.1 million.

5. "The House Bunny," $4.3 million.

6. "Tropic Thunder," $4.2 million.

7. "The Dark Knight," $4.0 million.

8. "Bangkok Dangerous," $2.4 million.

9. "Traitor," $2.1 million.

10. "Death Race," $2.0 million.

11. "Babylon A.D.," $1.7 million.

12. "Mamma Mia!," $1.7 million.

19 mil was top box office...but the whole box office that week was "POOR" And it's down hill from now on. !/2 half or 9.5 mil went to the theaters, so that left 9.5 for the movie makers. 50 mil up is a decent opening.

I liked it. My gf and I stayed after the credits and tried to figure out if it had any meaning. I hypothesized it was a cautionary tale about the abuses of a surveillance society.

But on Wiki Joel Cohen says, nah its just a black comedy of idiots, its no satire on politics or anything.

I've been a big fan of the Coen Brothers, but when they stink, they STINK! Most notably Barton Fink and Irreconcilable Differences.

Burn After Reading is in that class. A very not funny comedy.

You mean intolerable Cruelty? That movie was like the best ever holmes.

it's ok. my expectations were too high.

also, im still (overly, perhaps) bitter about learning how marketing leveraged bad reviews as positive.

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen!!! What a wonderful break from Palin tragecomedy.

How apropos that Brad Pitt is sporting Leninesque dirt-beard and looking so much like Todd Palin while touting a flick about nimrods who inadvertently have access to National Security secrets.

Palinesque

I hope I'm not giving too much away here, but the characters in the movie don't really have access to National Security secrets, they just think they do.

I think you were trying to describe George Clooney's appearance in the film. Brad Pitt was smooth shaven with a 90s hair do that featured some blonde streaks here and there. In any case, trying to work the Palins into anything about this movie is trying way too hard to find new ways to insult them.

Very entertaining and well-acted movie, however. You should go see it.

If you get Netflix, there should be reviews there.

It's a pretty good movie. Some very good comedy and has some nice twists to the plot. I'm not sure it was worth the $9.25 per ticket to go see it, but then again I don't think many movies actually are.

My husband and I saw it last night. I have to say that I enjoyed it, but like everyone is saying, it isn't the "madcap comedy" the previews make it out to be. It isn't for everyone. It is a dark dark comedy. I happen to like their sense of humor, like Fargo, which was dark too. (but this is no Fargo) Brad Pitt is great, George Clooney's character makes me laugh, and the rest of the cast is outstanding. They really know how to twist and turn you. It moves really slowly the first half, but really gets good, and all of the plots come together after that, with a really great ending. there are some really good moments that will make you laugh out loud, and others that will surprise you. We were still talking about it today.

Malkovich and Fances McDormand are outstanding!!!!

Brad Pitt is hilariously funny, funny funny. Great performance.

Very prescient social commentary and I loved the beginning (and end) with a satellite view of CIA headquarters -- a la Google Earth.

Not quite as dark as Fargo but still very dark, and very funny. I really enjoyed supporting actor J.K. Simmons from Law & Order.

I think JK Simmons is one of the most underrated actors working right now. I loved him in "Juno" and in "Spiderman". He is also good in this movie. His part was rather small, though.

Any of the HuffPo regulars see this movie yet? Is it as funny as it appears?

Saw it Friday. It is pretty funny, but not as funny as the previews make it out to be. It's dark humor, somewhat tragic humor. I liked it but it isn't as you may think.

I am dealing with enough darkness in the election. I guess I'll wait for it to come out on dvd... hopefully, after the election proves that Americans are not as stupid as I fear and Palin is back in Alaska.

I saw it yesterday. People in the audience were laughing uproariously, but I didn't think it was that funny. I liked it, thought it was funny, but not "belly laugh" funny. It is well made, has a great plot, but I maybe didn't quite "get it". It is a little dark. I paid "matinee" price and was glad that that was all I paid. I don't think this was Clooney's best work, but I like him in just about everything he does.
