Karl Rove: McCain's Ads Have Gone Too Far (VIDEO)

When Karl Rove is saying your political ads have gone too far, you know you must be doing something dishonest.

The former Bush chief strategist, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said that John McCain had stretched the truth in his recent round of attacks against Barack Obama, in the process opening up the Arizonan to a round of effective counter-attacks.

"McCain has gone in his ads one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent-truth test," said Rove. "Both campaigns ought to be careful about... there ought to be an adult who says: 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?'"

Watch:

McCain has received a heaping dose of criticism late this week for launching a series of advertisements that could be categorized as dishonest if not downright lies. The Obama camp, in a memo to reporters Sunday morning -- entitled a "Dishonorable, Dishonest Campaign" -- highlighted a number of these pieces. Joe Klein, of Time magazine called one spot the "sleaziest" he had ever seen. Paul Krugman of the New York Times, defined the episode as a "blizzard of lies." On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times, ran an editorial entitled: "Campaign Of Lies Disgraces McCain," while the Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, wrote that "to McCain the truth is expendable."

That Rove would acknowledge truth in these complaints is somewhat remarkable. The man known as Bush's brain made a reputation of slinging mud at the opposition and waiting for it to stick.

But it should be noted, Rove's complaints with McCain's strategy was not that it had elicited the condemnation of groups like politifact or factcheck.org -- "You can't trust the fact check organization in all respect," he said. "They are human beings and individuals; they have got their own biases in there." Rather, he argued that by exaggerating so wildly, the Republican presidential nominee had opened himself up to political attacks.

"They don't need to attack each other in this way," he said. "They have legitimate points to make about each other."

UPDATE: Sure enough, the Obama campaign weighs in... gleefully.

"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove - the man who held the previous record - said McCain's ads have gone too far," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

THE VERY PARTY THAT CREATED THIS CRISIS IS NOT BRAVE ENOUGH TO HELP SOLVE THE CRISIS!
WE NEED TO CLEAN THE REPBS OUT OF THE HOUSE, SENATE, AND THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH!

Nobody cares what rove says...nobody except us cos we's deperate to get rid of the useless articles that have been sc**ing up this country and want another four years to make our hearts sink.

That means rove just wants to talk to the obama campaign to try to get them not to turn the heat up on JMCCain.
So far Mccain has distinguished his campaign with ill-tempered and despicable lies about sex-ed etc, and hysteria about the smallest thing. He has gone into the "heart of darkness" presumably cos he's been there before. It also shows how desperate he is and now he has run out of crud and is looking exhausted and pale and crucially rove has realised the sh** slinging isn't working and wants to stop it He also wants to avoid reaping the backlash from the dems over this. However I think those repubs are gonna get a good return of rhetoric from the dems.
Too bad rovey you can't win 'em all, specially when every average joe doesn't know who the freak you are.
PS this goes out to firstshirt and all you repubs-
I think it is time we all gave you a great big hug, cos you're cuddly and we want you in this country cos though you vex us and say wildly unsupportable things you are good at hunting.

What this means is that now that Senator Obama is going after McCain they want to pull back so that GOP can start yelling and crying about how negative the Obama Campaign is being towards them. It's classic republican ball playing is all it is. They hate being left out of anything so now they have to start up something, it's just playing games and its sad that they think we don't see what they are doing.

They can save their acknowledgements of whether or not they were telling a lie because we don't believe anything they say. We will continue to push forward and get the TRUTH out to the American people.

What Rove's comments means for Obama is that the Republicans are secretly terrified that Obama will win this election. Since Rove knows that once the Republicans are out of office, his protection from prosecution for all his crimes would effectively evaporate. Therefore, heis trying to get on the right side of Obama, in order to avoid prosecution for his crimes against thie nation (disclosing the identity of a CIA opertaive-Valerie Plame). Unfortunately, for Rove, Obama will follow the rule of law.

Don't be fooled. Rove is behind every ad. He only says this now to distance his bad self from kind old John McCain. Rove says both campaigns have gone too far. The plan is now for McCain to go all warm and fuzzy while Obama looks bad counter-punching. But! Guess what?! Events have overtaken old Rove in his bunker. The economy makes his game sooo yesterday.

OK, folks lets calm down. Cheney will have Rove brought in to the Bat Cave and have is motherboard replaced. Next week he'll be out spewing the same verbal vomit as always!

karl rove always has an agenda within an agenda. His statement means nothing other than he is looking for credibility when he states his next lie.
09:48 PM on 09/16/2008
The only problem with Karl Rove is that he has no credibility. A draft dodger, leaker-of-classified-material, purveyor of cronyism, a mother who committed suicide and maybe one of the youngest unprosecuted Watergate conspirators, Karl Rove's opinions are the pot calling the kettle black

...Is this the best we can do...Karl Who? This guy is a disgrace. He's right up there with Ken Lay,
Bernie Ebbers and Dennis Kozlowski...

Where's Rudy Guliani when you need him?

Karl Rove?! I never thought i'd see the day! That tells you what he thinks of this ticket. It almost seems as if he's unconsciously trying to distance himself from this mess with Sarah.

Another Republican tactic: Pretending to be contrite.

Wow...2 Fox segments in 1 day? And the evil Karl Rove to boot! How can this be? I they are the right wing neocon conspiracy network. They couldn't possibly be saying bad things about McCain? I'll need to rethink my boycott of Fox News now.

I'd post a response to this, but everytime I criticize Fox, they remove my comment.

It be fantastic to see Obama get elected by a landslide. After these comments, I think he is a shoe-in.
