"Saturday Night Live" is back from summer hiatus. Kicking off with Olympian Michael Phelps as host, the show welcomed Tina Fey as VP candidate Sarah Palin, too. A guest appearance by Barack Obama was called off due to hurricane Ike. Below are some show highlights.

for all the marbles, I would like to answer the trivia question from the 'Home-schooled kids vs. Public school kids' faceoff. The question: "what was the last international war fought on US soil" and my answer is going to need a ruling: The United States fought Japan over the contested Alaskan Aleutian Island chain in WWII. Alaska had been relinquished by Russia to the US in 1867 but disputed whether the Aleutians were included. Japan fought a war with Russia in I believe 1905 and claimed the Aleutians as one of their prizes. The Japanase established a presence that the US hastily responded to and began building bases to claim the Aleutians which are closer by far to Japan and Russia than they are to US. But is it US soil? We could ask Todd Palin since he has a Russian name and 'eskimo' heritage and eskimos have family on both shores of the Bering and travel back and forth frequently. He works in the oil industry and Sarah hates American oil companies so perhaps he could help her navigate the intricacies of who owns what part of the north. Hey, Alaska! Isn't that where your oil is?

Tina Fey is SO good. She ought to make some ads [with Darrel Hannah as McSame] showing "what Sarah really thinks." There's no way you could tell the difference between her and the real witch.

It's uncanny how much Tina Fey and Sarah Palin look alike. Tina's got Palin down cold. I'd have trouble telling who I'm watching.

Let's hope Tina's impression of Palin can be retired in early November.

Tina Fey was so on target that for the first few seconds I was upset thinking they had put on Palin instead of Obama.
I wondered why Obama wasn't on; I thought maybe it would have been troublesome on the night when they rolled out the scathing Palin routine, but he chose to reschedule because of Hurricane Ike.

it's weird with the whole "SNL digital short" thing. they used to be about anything and they used to feature any random cast member or guest star, but over the last couple years, it seems to have become an exclusivel­y-andy-sam­berg thing. which I have no problem with. the dude is funny- and when he's not so funny, he's at least so bizarre ("space olympics") that it's funny. I think the "d**k in a box" song with justin timberlake was the best- followed by "roy", his ode to his sister's husband. funny as hell.
