With the election only weeks away, msnbc.com is presenting the series Briefing Book: Issues '08 assessing issues and controversies that the next president cannot avoid once he takes the oath of office.

The American entanglement in Iraq has receded as a campaign issue in the past few months, partly because the number of American casualties has declined since last year. But Iraq will be an unavoidable dilemma for the next president.

Why it's a problem
The United States has had troops in Iraq since March of 2003.

Former Secretary of Defense (under Kennedy) Robert McNamara said that you must have empathy for your enemy. He did not mean that in the traditional sense of the word, what he meant was you have to understand your enemy. In the current administration's haste and greed that simple rule of engagement was forgotten. We have helped unleash a new sectarian violence in Iraq.

The ignition sequence has started already, despite efforts to gloss over the fact.

the only difference between the two candidates with regard to iraq are the words they use. both will leave forces behind when the iraqis are able to secure their country themselves. both will ratchet up operations in afghanistan.

i was in tokyo when the security pact with the USA was being crammed down the throat of japan in 1970. there were massive demonstrations against the terms because the japanese recognized it as a continuation of occupation post ww2(and japan was being used as a staging area for the vietnam war). free people don't like another country's armed forces wandering their land and dictating policy.

I'm not even going to read the rest of this MSNBC transcript because they are complicit in this war to begin with - in not reporting opposition to the war with Iraq in Jan-March 2003 - before it started. Protesters were right on in denouncing the war machine and MSNBC was silent about the pertainent facts that surfaced prior to the invasion . "Shock and Awe" will go down as one of the greatest scam propoganda stints since Hitler's Germany.

They predict an "unavoidable dilemma for the next president." Why? - because they like drama. Blood sells and they will do whatever posible to make Obama's easy decision look hard.
US out of Iraq - We aready lost. We have nothing to gain and eveything to loose by continuing the insane notion of eternal war!

The plan of Cheny and Bush was taken from the Hitler files. The media was the "Vehicle " in which they controlled what was passed out to the public. The very same thing "Hitler did. And we never thought it would happen in the "United States of America.

I won't say Democrats, but Liberals = Surrender At All Costs! It Doesn't Matter If Things Are Going Well Or Not! If We Don"t Surrender, People That Actually Like America Will Be In Charge!

President Eisenhower wasn't a Democrat or Liberal, but a pragmatic warrior. He simply walked out of Korea.
