MIAMI — Jewish voters in Florida and at least one other state are being targeted by a telephone survey tying Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama to Palestinian causes, an advocacy group alleged Monday.

The Jewish Council for Education in Research says at least two women in separate states were push polled, or asked questions intended to influence voters while pretending to take a poll, on Sunday afternoon from a caller who said he was from Research Strategies.

Joelna Marcus says she became uncomfortable when the caller asked if she was Jewish, whether she was Orthodox and how often she attends synagogue.

The caller then asked if Marcus would be influenced if she learned that Obama had donated money to the Palestine Liberation Organization. The caller also asked how she would vote if she learned that someone on the Illinois senator's staff had close ties to Palestine.

Marcus, a 71-year-old former college professor, said she was furious.

"I said you're not polling me. This is un-American. This is unacceptable," said Marcus, a snowbird who lives in New Jersey and has a house in Key West. "And then this is the scary part. He said if you had not said that you were Jewish, you would have been disqualified."

Deborah Minden, who lives in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Pittsburgh received a similar call Sunday afternoon. After asking basic demographic information, Minden, 56, said the caller said, "I'm going to ask you some things about Sen. Obama and you tell me if it would make you more or less likely to vote for him."

The poller then ticked off a list of accusations including that Obama's church had made anti-Semitic statements and that Obama had met with Hamas leaders.

A spokesman for Sen. John McCain, who is on a two-day swing in Florida, did not immediately comment Monday night.

"We see this as a disturbing but not unexpected ratcheting up of the kind of misinformation and outright lies about Obama's record that we've literally seen since he declared his candidacy," said Mik Moore, co-executive director of the Jewish Council for Education & Research. The organization has endorsed Obama for president.

During the Republican presidential primaries, McCain alleged push polling had taken place and asked for an investigation into thousands of calls to New Hampshire voters that disparaged him and supported rival Mike Huckabee.

Despite all the Obama is a muslim b.s. floating around, he has strong ties to the Jewish community. He's related to a rabbi: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/16/politics/main4453505.shtml?source=mostpop_story.

Here is the background on the push poll. It was apparently sponsored by the Republican Jewish Coalition. They claim it wasn't push polling because they say it wasn't push polling. Circular logic anyone?

If the RNC or McCain is paying that firm to lie to voters it's a criminal act (at least in some states).

While I can't prove that Wilson Research Strategies (http://www.w-r-s.com) is CURRENTLY working for McCain or the Republicans (though it's reasonable conclusion), I can prove that they HAVE BEEN hired by the Republican Party before (in the 2004 election cycle).

From OpenSecrets.org's page with expenditures from the National Republican Congressional Committee (data from the FEC):

WILSON RESEARCH STRATEGIES -- $10,000 -- Survey 02/13/03
WILSON RESEARCH STRATEGIES -- $9,450 -- Survey 02/13/03

We MUST get this information out to the MSM. You know that they are days (even weeks) behind on getting the story. This is serious and needs to be broadcast. Yes Senator Obama is tired of the daily attacks, lies and distortions but he has been fighting for US on the campaign trail for longer than Mrs. Palin has been Governor! Let's not let him down.

We must keep Hope in our hearts and vote Obama and Biden in on Nov 4th!!

Obama is getting his stride back...don't worry. It's disheartening to deal with the Republican attack machine, day after day but it will all be over soon.

Is it just me or has anybody else notice that everything that Obama warned us about has come to pass. Bush & McCain have taunted him initially on every turn, but then low and behold, you look around and they both come around to his posistions. America we are in a defining moment in history. What will it tell us about ourselves as a nation and how will it be written? Will we act on our hopes or our fears? 80% of americans believe that we on the wrong track, there is no way that McCain should be close in this race. He has already sold his soul and his integrity since his nomination, instead of picking Romney who knew a little something about the economy, he chose Palin to ignite culture wars which nobody benefits from that.

I know! I just said to my hubby tonight that Obama is like Nostradamus. Everything he has said from Iraq to Afghanistan to the Campaigns to the Economy , etc. etc. has been correct.

I trust Obama and have found that he does everything for Country First and foremost, unlike Mc who will try to win at any cost even to his own integrity and honor. I can't wait to call him President Obama.

The Republicans will stoop to the lowest of lows in order to win an election. They tell lies and even try to deny the people their constitutional right to vote. Now who is unAmerican.

What's missing is a firm statement from anyone that these statements aren't true. There are complaints that this is to cause fear, there are complaints that this is unethical but no response to if the statements are true. In fact Obama has been endorsed by Hamas and there are Palestinians in Palestine who call Americans in America to voice support for Obama.

These allegations against Obama may not be true but if no one is willing to challenge them rather than complain that the allegation was made and given the history of who supports Obama, what else are we left to believe?

RWMarine, I can just imagine that you have been trained to believe that it is US against THEM and that The US is the only mighty, righteous country and all others are only worthy of killing and pillaging. Becaue of this brainwashing, I will show empathy towards your remarks and what you are "left to believe"

The main thing is that most of the WORLD supports Barack Obama because he is a Leader, a Unifier (a real one, not fake like Bush) and a Humanitarian. He will certainly do what is needed to fight forces that have harmed and have intent to harm us but he will also use diplomacy and reach out a hand to diffuse rather than incite. The ones who don't support him are the sheeples who are easily swayed and distracted and who must be told how to think. As an American I appreciate and support your dedication and sacrifice for our country and know that Obama will also support you with legislation, thoughtfulness and care as to when and where he sends you and our troops.

I'll confess that I am extremely patriotic but this was true even before I enlisted.

Most of the world supports Obama? How do we know? There are polls which tell us one thing but those can be skewed. People in free democracies can vote for whomever they want and if a candidate has strong ties to America the people can vote against him. Now of course local matters would be of great concern but let's look at some of the people elected. France elected Nicolas "the American" Sarkozy. England elected Gordon Brown who in an interview with Katie Couric stated that he wanted the American people to know that he was "very pro-American." Canada elected Stephan Harper who has been described as the most pro-American leader in the Western world.

Obama will excercise care when he sends troops into harms way? He has come out in support of deploying US troops into Darfur where we have no strategic interest and pulling out of Iraq which would cause the rest of the world to doubt our resolve.

Notice that in these situations, the republican response is always something like "well both sides are guilty of things like this" as an attempt to muddle the issue. It's like someone setting fire to your house, then when you become outraged and get into a fight with them saying "well we both were upset". Everyone knows that Rove is the sultan of sleaze and is working on McCain's campaign -which says something about McCain since Rove did the exact insidious, sleazy thing to him in 2004.

I have a script for a push-poll: "Would you vote for John McCain if you knew his campaign ads were full of lies and that one of his staffers was responsible for the bill resulting in 3 major banks closing in the last month?"

It probably wouldn't work -got too many truths in it.

I just went on McCain's senate website and sent him an email asking him to stop destroying the country by pursuing scorched-earth politics. Here's the email address:

Maybe you want to send him a note too. And feel free to send the idea and link to anyone you know who wants the insanity to stop. At this rate, come November, there won't be a country left to run.

What is so interesting is that the "fundamental Christian Right" supports McCain mainly due to his stance on abortion and any other viewpoint is "sin". However, such support is confusing to me since lying and cheating are also "sins" which should be abhorred by the Christian Right - but we hear nothing from them on the other aspects of McCain's views and actions! This is nothing less than hypocritical and I truly wonder what Jesus would say to these folks in light of their lack of a backbone to tell McCain to stop lying! Wouldn't he tell these modern-day Pharisees that they are "vipers" just as he did two thousand years ago? They need to readd Mark 7: 6-8: "And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7) in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.' 8) You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men."

The "Christian"Right and their abortion stance is merely a front for Republican politics under the thinly disguised veil of caring about the the unborn. That's their rally-around-the-flagpole used to sway the clueless sheep into joining the republican party. Most republicans, including the majority of televangelists, are low-lifers who get their kicks labeling all Democrats as sinful and wicked. They can't hide their vicious fangs anymore and can't even fake caring about abortion. Notice how once they get their presidents, judges and congresspersons in office, no more mention is made about abortion until the next election? The truth is, NOTHING is as sacred to them as the Good Oleboy Party..

Exactly right. If they are so concerned about what goes on inside a woman's womb, they'd have done something about the state of our healthcare. If they were so worried about the welfare of babies, they'd do something about our abysmal infant mortality rates in comparison to other leading world countries. If they cared so much for the sanctity of human life, they'd stop sending our soldiers to the slaughter for profit.

While this polling is ridiculous (not to mention that it puts people in the very uncomfortable situation of talking to strangers about the private matter of religious beliefs and practices), I don't think we can declare the Democrats entirely innocent in this type of phone-y campaigning.

Just a few weeks ago several articles came out regarding a phone campaign carried out by Gazan youth who called American citizens telling them to vote for Obama. Although the Gazan organizer, Abu Jayyeb, admitted that the group's behavior was in no way mandated by or connected to the Obama camp, it can nonetheless only be classified as a pleading phone campaign for support.

My point is this: I understand that by disguising their campaigning as polling, members of the Jewish Council for Education and Research did a bad, fraudulent thing. But let's remember two important things: one, that there is no proof that McCain's people in any way instructed the JCER to undertake this phone poll (thereby rendering comments along the lines of "Oh McCain, so dishonest!" void), and two, that this type of campaigning over the phone happens unsanctioned by the candidates themselves, in both camps, all the time.

As a sidebar, it's not at all disingenuous to discuss Obama's former mentorship by his reverend who did, in his church, spout anti-white, anti-Semitic views... hence Obama's severing of his ties to Rev. Wright. What's disingenuous is claiming that these particular Republicans were spreading lies by bringing up that fact.

Dems must understand that there are neo-con extremists as well as many members of the Republican party and their favourite lobbyists who will fight for McCain to the 'bitterest' end and will use the dirtiest tactics to make sure that a man of colour doesn't occupy the White House.
