GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Barack Obama on Monday mocked John McCain's promise to bring change to Washington, saying the Republican presidential nominee has marched loyally with President Bush and was out of touch with the economic distress of struggling Americans.

"In 19 months he has not named one thing he would do differently from this administration on the central issue of this election," Obama said of McCain. "Not one thing. And we know that if we go down that path, that the next four years will look exactly like the last eight."

Seven weeks before the election, Obama sought to portray McCain as an unshakable ally of the unpopular Bush and Washington lobbyists _ unsympathetic to the pocketbook issues that are the No. 1 concern of American voters. Obama delivered a frontal attack that showed none of the hesistancy that has worried some of his own supporters as McCain edged ahead in the polls.

"Can you afford to take a chance on someone who's voted against the minimum wage 19 times," Obama asked a crowd of thousands under a blazing sun at a rally in western Colorado at the start of a swing through contested Western states. "When it was $4, he was against it, when it was $5 he was against it, when it was $6 he was against it."

Obama closed the day in Pueblo with a rally at the Colorado State Fairgrounds before a wildly enthusiastic crowd estimated by the facility's general manager at 13,500.

The nation's economic anxieties were sharpened by a historic upheaval on Wall Street with the announcements that financial giant Lehman Brothers was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy while titan Merrill Lynch was being bought by Bank of America for about $50 billion.

Charging that McCain was out of touch, Obama said, "He doesn't get what's happening between the mountains in Sedona where he lives and the corridors of power where he works. Why else would he say that we've made great progress economically under George Bush. Why else would he say that the economy isn't something he understands as well as he should.

"Why else would he say, today of all days, just a few hours ago _ think about this, we just woke up to news of financial disaster _ and this morning he said that the fundamentals of the economy are still strong. Sen. McCain, what economy are you talking about?"

McCain's campaign accused Obama of distorting the GOP candidate's comments.

"Only Barack Obama would take a statement about the strength, ingenuity and resilience of American workers and American industry and turn it into a political distortion and attack," said McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds. "Barack Obama's short career as a public servant has been defined by pessimism, defeatism, and weakness in the face of the great challenges of our time. His lack of faith in American workers may explain his willingness to raise taxes during a struggling economy, but it is no way to lead our country."

Obama said chaos in the financial markets was "the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression. I certainly don't fault Sen. John McCain for these problems. I do fault the economic philosophy he subscribes to."

"It's the same philosophy we've had for the last eight years, one that says we should give more and more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to everyone else," Obama said. "It's a philosophy that says even commonsense regulations are unnecessary, unwise. One that says we should just stick our heads in the sand and ignore economic problems until they spiral into crisis."

Obama's campaign released a new television commercial accusing McCain of running some of the "sleaziest ads" ever seen _ especially an ad that declares Obama supports sex education for kindergartners. The ad is a distortion of Obama's position. He supported legislation that would teach age-appropriate sex education to kindergartners, including information on rejecting advances by sexual predators.

Obama also chided McCain for another new commercial that promises "change that we need."

"Sound familiar?" said Obama, who has made "change" the central theme of his campaign. "Let me tell you, instead of borrowing my lines he needs to borrow some of my ideas. Change isn't about slogans. It's about substance."

He also took a little poke at McCain's running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, raising the "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska that she initially supported and later opposed. Saying that McCain had put some lobbyists in key roles of his campaign, Obama said, "If you think those lobbyists are working day and night for John McCain just to put themselves out of business, well I've got a bridge to sell you up in Alaska."

Not sure how Obama can consistently miss the point. This quote from myrealitytelevision.com says it all, we created our own problems by depending on foreign products and natural resources rather than tapping and developing our own...

Our NIMBY attitude is so extreme, we preach about alternative energy, but actually block projects that would reduce our dependency on oil and help clean our environment. This was exemplified when a battle arose over a plan for a wind farm for Cape Cod, Massachusetts that would generate nearly half the electrical supply for Cape Cod and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. It was hoped that this wind farm would be in place by 2005. It didn’t happen. Why? NIMBY!! Wayne Kurker, president of Hyannis Marina, formed the “Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound”, specifically to fight the wind farm proposal.

People need to interpret this article carefully. Don't just compare the bottom numbers because that makes McC look like his plan is the better. Please note the top of the charts and then the individual comparisons across the chart. I posted this link yesterday and was called a repug and told to leave but when I checked the posters profile it turned out we're on the same side. If you read the chart the way it was intended OB's plan is far superior because he actually shows a way to pay for it.

hate to say it, but I don't think this helps Obama (altho it should). in a crisis people will look for the candidate with the most overall experience - even if it's the wrong kind or not relevant - and that candidate unfortunately is McCain. His numbers on handling the economy vs Obama have come up a lot. plus they can claim that even Palin has more executive/economic experience than Obama. I think he has to do more than say what he will do and tie Bush to McCain, he has to say WHY he is the best person to get us out of this.

Obama should be careful railing against CEO pay since the guy Johnson that was initially on his veep selection was all for it. Johnson eventually resigned because of conflicts and shady loans. They're all the same...it's so depressing having to pick the lesser of evils. Why can't we find a candidate that's got ambition and passion that isn't self serving and a ego maniac?

This is the worst since the Great Depression. This is not like 9-11 it is an economic 911 call.
The only thing that prevents this from being a repeat of the Great Depression is the interconnected global banking system. If they allow the U.S. to sink into insolvency they will, including China find their economy in the tank too. But we are in for some really tough times and have been in a recession for a couple years already.
We can thank Phil "McCain's econ brain" Gramm and his wife Wendy who accomplished the deregulation of energy and mortgage industries. This led to Wall Street going in the tank with worthless CDO's, based on subprime loan packages.

The only reason Phil is in the background of McCain's campaign is that he slipped and said what all of these Neocons say in private. We are "whiners" who don't deserve respect.
We must get these thieves out of office.

"It's the economy, stupid" would be all Obama has to say -- if he weren't running against the kind of Borrow and Bomb Conservatives who will tell any lie to stay in power. But if you think getting thieves like the GB-man out of office is easy -- look at the last 28 years. Phil Gramm deregulated energy. Gas is at $4.00 a gallon. Phil Gramm deregulated the mortgage industry. Wall Street's belly up. And floating lower in the water every day. "it's the economy, stupid." The GB-man lied to America about "weapons of mass destruction." Those lies cost the taxpayers THREE TRILLION DOLLARS. What will Governor MooseJaw and the Stiff Egg do with eight more years? Stay tuned ....

well if the American people don't realize that the intention of the attacks on Sept 11 were to get to the heart of the American economy then they really won't get this.

there really doesn't have to be another blood violent attack on the US because as the arab countries enjoy only paying 79 cents for gas while we struggle to fill out tanks, and now the woes of main street are hitting wall street, the purpose of their original attack is coming into fruition.

A country is only as strong as its middle class. we are a weak country getting weaker.

GWB's tax reform (the one McCain supports and wants to make it permanent) propped up the stock market for the last few years. The trickle down that Bush expected to happen don't happen and the wealth was given to stock holders making it overinflated, but now the ballon has a leak.

Phil Gramm, Economic Adviser to John McCain, was the author of the bill that did away, in 1999, with the protection of banks from speculators (investment banks-- Bear Stearns, Lehmann, etc.), the Glass-Steagall Act, a protection for people who (used to) trust banks, that had been put in place after the Great Depression of 1929. Well done, Mr. Gramm.
So, Mr. McCain are you going to repudiate your Economic Adviser?

I knew when it happened that it we would eventually be back here with bank failures. I asked a Prof of mine what he thought about the rollbacks and he said he didn't think it would be a problem because times had changed. I reminded that times do change but people don't and we'll wait and see what happens in the future and bada boom, bada bing, what do we have now?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:35 PM on 09/15/2008

Really what protection was that? This is so ridiculous. There was no way that anyone could
have foreseen or stopped lenders from giving out loans to people that were not qualified to
pay them back. The invention of derivatives and the belief that real-estate would always go up
is what caused this. Raising capitol gains taxes or any other type of taxes is not what is going
to cure it. We need to stimulate the economy. Not put more money into the governments hands
in hopes of a hand out.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:51 PM on 09/15/2008

Ignorance is bliss. The Glass-Steagall Act was repealed. 9 years later Wall Street's belly up -- AGAIN. Making the rich pay taxes won't cure the problem -- but it will help. Or maybe you really believe sucking money out of the economy without contributing anything but a larcenous attitude toward other people's money actually represents a positive economic contribution? Certainly the Borrow and Bomb Conservative crowd would like you to think they actually believe rich people shouldn't have to pay taxes because their investments "stimulate" the economy. But isn't that the Trickle Down theory? which was thoroughly discredieted even before Reagan got ahold of it. President Hoover couldn't quite believe it was happening on his watch, either. Except for the strength of the Borrow and Bomb Conservative lobby, here's really no reason capital can't be taxed directly at the same rate real property is taxed. You own an acre, you pay real estate tax, and if you make money farming you owe income tax. You own a share, you could pay a capital tax, and if the share makes any money, then the dividend and the capital gain should be taxed at the same rate as ordinary income. However, there's a whole industry -- including the Trained Seals Legion of Pet Economists -- that will be happy to tell you the ownership of shares should not be taxed, and that dividends and capital gains should be taxed at a much lower rate than wages. Taxing all income the same sounds

I know one other thing that won't cure it...playing the political blame game.

Kick both of these parties out of Washington. Do it by starting locally, in your cities or counties' elections. That's how America speaks.

If McCain were serious about reform - why didn't he leave the Republican party (which NEVER reforms, just shreds the Constitution one page at a time) and either become an Independent or a Democrat?

What, you say? It goes against the very grain of what his personal $$$s reaps?

Sorry, went a bit rabid for a second!

McCain's not a reformer -- he's a card-carrying member of the Borrow and Bomb Squad Conservatives. His supporters are laughing all the way to the bank.

When do the Hearings begin....?????

Or is this just another empty-indignation, tempest-in-a-teapot?

President Bush is not SMART enough to pull this off.

3 more prominat DEMS about to be thrown under the bus. Me thinks.

Alan Greenspan I understand but Barnie Frank and Chris Dodd? What did they have to do with this? And two Dems against the entire Republican party in both Houses of Congress, notice that you didn't mention that and the fact that Repubs are the ones that sponsored it. Alan Greenspan is a Repub, whether you like it or not. It was the Repubs with some Dems aiding and abetting but it was NOT the entire Dem party that sponsored or co-sponsored these rollbacks. Remember, they couldn't be sitting on any committiees when the Repubs ruled. Maybe if they had been able to then this wouldn't have happened.

They begin with that snake in the grass Phil Graham who sat smugly in the first row at McCain's speech today. This is the guy responsible for this collapse and he is just sitting there mugging for the cameras and hoping his lame candidate wins so that he can go on to assume his next great job....Secretary of the US Treasury.... and no ... that is not a joke.

I just watched Biden in Flat Rock, MI and he nailed it..
he gave examples of every single vote that McC had in his long years as a senator where he voted agains the American Middle Class and Poor.... he was specific and he was hitting hard on the economy.... it was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I suggest just keeping CNN Live up on your browser and checking every now and then for one of the live campaign stops.... MSM doesn't cover this and makes us think that they are not hitting hard on the economy....
They are doing great
