John McCain defended his campaign from charges that it has a problem with the truth and batted back suggestions that he is economically out-of-touch during appearances on all seven morning shows Tuesday.

It was an uphill task, perhaps best illuminated by the Senator's appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe. McCain was forced to redefine what he meant when he declared the "fundamentals of our economy are strong" just yesterday. He offered curt responses to charges that one of his ads falsely accuses Barack Obama of supporting sex education for kindergartners. (Later in the show, in fact, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds sent an email to host Mika Brzezinski defending the ad, which she subsequently read on air.)

Most glaringly, McCain openly sparred with Brzezinski, whom he accused of being an open supporter of Obama. Asked by the host to assess whether an ad attacking him on the economy was out of bounds, McCain replied:

"I'll leave that for the American people to decide. I still say to you, and I know you are a supporter of Senator Obama, if you would urge him to come and do town all meetings with me as I have asked him to do time after time the whole tenor of the campaign would change."

The charge created an awkward and tense environment for the rest of the segment, with Brzezinski forced to note (as she has done in the past) that one of her brothers works for the McCain campaign (another brother works for Obama, and her father was once an adviser).

"Senator," she said, "as a characterized Barack Obama supporter, I take objection. I'Il just say, take care of my brother working at the campaign."

"Thanks," replied McCain, "that was a cheap shot."

But the issue clearly hung over the rest of the morning. Later in the show, Brzezinski addressed it once again.

"In light of the John McCain interview, I feel I need to say not only does my brother work for the McCain campaign, but he worked for George Bush for six years," she said. "I'm proud of him."

Meanwhile, Republican strategist and former McCain aide Mike Murphy was left to explain away the Senator's humor, albeit adding that he thought the campaign's antagonism to the media had crossed a line.

"i don't think he meant it as an attack," he said. "There's definitely become a mentality inside the McCain campaign which is very hostile for anybody in the media they think is at all favorable to the other side. I think that's mistake. I think they overreact. I think doesn't do McCain well to have that mentality in the campaign. I don't really understand it because it's not his natural way."

Here's video for the full segment:

About the worst thing that could happen to MCCain now would be "town hall meetings". Perhaps Obama is refusing them out of compassion for the old goat.

George Will just spoke in Grand Rapids Michigan tonight. The conservative crazy crowd is now eating their young! Ole Georgie angrily savaged McCain and Bush....right in the backyard of the religious nut cases that call themselves "Compassionate Conservatives".....yeah, right. Keep your hand on your wallet! Obama 08? ENOUGH!

The Right is beginining to finally realize that they never got the compasionate conservative son of George "Herbert Walker" Bush but they got the equivelant of an incompetent conservative that does not know the difference between prosecution and persecution.

The bottom line is, whether we agree or not; the same folks who say "America, love it or leave it" or who remark about Obama being unpatriotic for now wearing a flag lapel pin, are the base of McCain's support. (After his wealthy cronies, that is...) These people aren't interested in their candidate's actual ability to lead or make good decisions, they'll take their lumps along the way like good little Americans, because to do any less would be unpatriotic.
These are people steeped in tradition, framed by their religious beliefs who will vote someone into office because he prays, or because he was a POW, or because she's a nice woman who is making her mark in the world while having babies and raising her family. Surely, these things must qualify someone to lead a nation! To these folks, a handshake is as good as a signed contract. These people are living in a reality that simply doesn't exist anymore, if it EVER did.
You're never going to convice people with this mindset that their candidate is anything less than TOTALLY honest, trustworthy and good. Sadly, this simplicity is usually exploited by those in power and in the end, this type of person is often hurt the MOST by their leaders. I honestly pity these people, because they just can't comprehend the duplicity and dishonesty of politicians in general. Small town USA elected "dubyah", so it's not much a reach to imagine them electing McCain.

.

Not really testy; just rovian slimeball politics.

McSame wants ' meetings" where he can bait fear mongering to paint his opponent as not as reactionary and tough as himself.

Just like w his campaign highlights your worst possible fears to illicit a reactionary startle response.

He's so uninformed he claimed as president he'd fire Chris Cox who the president can't fire.

He's lies are so bold and consistent we now think of he and his vp candidate as liars.

I don't think he got testy. MSNBC has become a tabloid of a network.! I watch CNN and FOX to be entertained on the candidates.

In my opinion: "savior" Obama is a PUPPET of his Party!! He votes present but doesn't commit to any issue (s.)

Hillary would have made a better candidate. So thanks to all the Hillary haters we now have a close race. Mc Cain has been handed the keys to the White House.

As an Independent voter I say " I don't need the media nor the opinion of others to make me more confused on the state of our economy and all the problems we are facing. " If we don't know the facts as to who is better fit to be president, we are all doomed!

We need to ask our candidates:

There is that hot irrational temper that will certainly flare up in what ought to be diplomatic negotiations if (heaven forbid) McCain is elected. Read the Elizabeth Drew piece--it is on Truthout--about how her opinion McCain has changed even though she wrote what was basically a favorable bio of him.

Yup. I'm well aware of those facts. They all take money from lobbylists, but are lobbyists running Obama's campaign? No, they are running McCaign's campaign. That part of what I mean by overboard.

And, let's face it. McCain has nothing to offer us but war and more wars. So, when interviewed, what else is he going to do but make empty promises and flip remarks.

Perhaps Mika ought to scream "sexism" the way the McCain campaign has been doing whenever anybody criticizes Palin's "credentials" (or lack, thereof).

Mcpalin has to have his way or else he throws a fit of rage....hope Barack pushes his buttons in the debates and exposes his inability to take stress and pressure as he once did as a POW.

Please don't make it a matter of age. McCain has always been an irresposible hothead. The US taxpayers footed the bill for his military academy education, while he blew off schoolwork and used the time to goof around. Then when he graduated, he wasted more taxpayers money by consistently crashing almost every plane he was permitted to fly. He is no better, no worse in old age, except that he is more ambitious now then when he was a party-boy goofoff.
