John McCain struck a tough, quasi-populist pose this morning during his morning sweep of the television news shows. Speaking to NBC's Matt Lauer about the current crisis on Wall Street, the Republican nominee said executives have "treated it like a casino and need to be held accountable and stop walking away with these fat-cat packages."

Leave aside for the moment the fact that one of McCain's top economic advisers, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, walked away with a $42 million "golden parachute" after being fired. Overall, the generic Wall Street "fat cat" is a tough character for McCain to cast as his nemesis, given his success in fundraising among their ranks. As Bloomberg reported Monday night, securities and investment companies have collectively donated millions to both McCain and Barack Obama.

Employees from Merrill Lynch, one of the two big disaster stories in Monday's economic news, have donated over $100,000 more to McCain than Obama in this cycle. As Bloomberg reported, McCain's "largest campaign donors" were employees of Merrill Lynch, as well as their families, who in total gave the Arizonan $298,413.

Lehman Brothers, by contrast, donated almost three times as much to Obama as McCain. But today, however, it was McCain who inveighed at length against the "inside-the-beltway old-boy network," including executives "walking away with pay packages for failed enterprises." When speaking with Lauer, McCain also pledged to "fix the regulatory system and bring it into the 21st century," an idea none too popular with the same Wall Street finance moguls who have donated so generously to both parties.

As the New York Times reported in a news analysis on Tuesday, McCain "has consistently characterized himself as fundamentally a deregulator," and "has no history prior to the presidential campaign of advocating steps to tighten standards on investment firms." According to a survey of his past policy positions and key economic advisers, the paper concluded that McCain has "never departed in any major way from his party's embrace of deregulation."

Whether or not McCain's stance on regulation is the product of deep-seated ideological belief or due to the influence of donors and lobbyists is, of course, impossible to determine. But if you're curious to do your own digging on the presidential money chase, check out Huff Post's Fundrace tool, where you can check out the donations from employees of AIG, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Bros. and other major players in the current Wall Street crisis. You can also check out the donor histories of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

I attended the rally Tuesday in Tampa and heard McCain say, "Let's stop sending $700 billion to countries that don't like us" when referring to U.S. oil imports. According to the U.S. government the number one exporter of oil to the U.S. is Canada. I didn't know that Canada didn't like us.

Franklin Raines - current advisor to Obama:

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have enriched their top executives for years. Mr. Mudd’s predecessor at Fannie Mae, Franklin D. Raines, took home more than $52 million while he was chief executive from 1999 to 2004, according to Equilar data.

Mr. Raines later agreed to forfeit several million dollars’ worth of stock and options to resolve personal claims over allegations that Fannie Mae had inflated its earnings to raise executive bonuses. Even though Fannie Mae was forced to restate its earnings, Mr. Raines walked away with at least $25 million in pension benefits, as well as stock options he did not cash in — many of which are now worthless.

Please get your facts right.

EMPLOYEES of any company can give up to $2300 to a campaign. So when thousands of EMPLOYEES give $25-$100 to a campaign as INDIVIDUALS, do NOT connect them to the company where they work. For all you know, employees of Fanny/Freddie saw the lack of REGULATION and had ENOUGH. Since Obama is collecting more donations than anyone, it is not hard to say records of almost any large business can be parsed out and made to look like the business is supporting the candidate, when it in fact it's the individual worker.

ENOUGH lies and distortions please. Why can't republicans do MATH.

Where are the lies? Did I get them out of order? I did however make the mistake and did not cite that Freddie Mac also is included.

McCain is nothing more than a modern day " Wizard of Oz"....basically another huckster hiding behind a curtain while making promises, all based on an fraudulent, overblown public image. When you dig deep into all the facts about the guy, you'll find the out the truth. If you buy into the image they paint, you'll end up fighting for your life.

The savings and loan crisis of the 1980s and 1990s (commonly referred to as the S&L crisis) was the failure of 747 savings and loan associations (S&Ls) in the United States. The ultimate cost of the crisis is estimated to have totaled around USD$160.1 billion, about $124.6 billion of which was directly paid for by the U.S. government—that is, the U.S. taxpayer, either directly or through charges on their savings and loan accounts—which contributed to the large budget deficits of the early 1990s. The resulting taxpayer bailout ended up being even larger than it would have been because moral hazard and adverse selection incentives compounded the system’s losses.

The Lincoln Savings led to the Keating Five political scandal, in which five U.S. senators were implicated in an influence-peddling scheme. It was named for Charles Keating, who headed Lincoln Savings and made $300,000 as political contributions to them in the 1980s. Three of those senators - Alan Cranston(D-CA), Don Riegle(D-MI), and Dennis DeConcini(D-AZ) - found their political careers cut short as a result. Two others - John Glenn(D-OH) and John McCain(R-AZ) - were rebuked by the Senate Ethics Committee for exercising "poor judgment" for intervening with the federal regulators on behalf of Keating. - Wikipedia

What else can you expect from the candidate for the party that wrecked America. McCain may try to run from the Repubs, but he is still one of them.

McCain has a legacy of following the rules only when it suits him.

Phil Gramm speaks. McCain listens. History repeats itself. See Hoover/Curtis if you want a 2008 version with McCain/Palin.
