Campaign Momentum Shifts Back To Obama

Barack Obama, whose campaign many feared was collapsing in the Democratic presidential tradition of Kerry, Dukakis, and Mondale, has pulled slightly ahead of John McCain in the latest polls, while Republicans watch the boost McCain got from Sarah Palin evanesce.

There is no concrete evidence of what is driving the revival of Obama's strength, but he has been pounding McCain on economic issues, especially hitting McCain's Monday assertion that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong."

On television, an Obama spot asks, "How can John McCain fix our economy if he doesn't understand it's broken?" On the stump, playing for free media, Obama asks his opponent, "Senator -- what economy are you talking about?"

Obama's improved fortunes are relieving an epidemic of Democratic anxiety from Beverly Hills and South Central Los Angeles to the Upper West Side and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Recent fears among Democratic activists have been based on a brief spate of polls. After holding a relatively consistent lead for five months, Obama, two weeks ago, suddenly looked vulnerable. In six out of seven national polls conducted from September 5 to September 11 and tracked by RealClearPolitics, McCain led:

Over the past six days, however, Obama appears to be regaining his footing, pulling ahead of McCain in four out of the five most recent surveys, culminating in leads ranging from 1 point (Rasmussen) to a relatively solid 5-point advantage in the September 12-16 CBS News/New York Times survey published in the September 18 paper.

Providing a lift to Democratic spirits, the New York Times wrote:

"Polls taken after the Republican convention suggested that Mr. McCain had enjoyed a surge of support -- particularly among white women after his selection of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate -- but the latest poll indicates "the Palin effect" was, at least so far, a limited burst of interest... the Times/CBS News poll suggested that Ms. Palin's selection has, to date, helped Mr. McCain only among Republican base voters; there was no evidence of significantly increased support for him among female voters in general. White women are evenly divided between Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama; before the conventions, Mr. McCain led Mr. Obama among white women by a margin of 44 percent to 37 percent."

There is continuing evidence in the survey that any new national security threat, such as the September 16 attack on the US Embassy in Yemen, could work to the advantage of McCain, who was rated as likely to be an effective commander in chief by an overwhelming 82 percent of voters, compared to a 59 percent rating for Obama. In addition, the survey found that exactly half of voters questioned believe the surge in Iraq troop strength - a policy initiative strongly backed by McCain, has improved conditions in the country.

Poll data has not yet captured the full partisan consequences of the crisis on Wall Street.

The CBS-Times poll suggests that McCain will have an uphill struggle distancing himself from GOP orthodoxy: "57 percent of all voters said they viewed him as a typical Republican, compared with 40 percent who said he was a different kind of Republican." The poll found, in addition, that the Democratic Party retained a 50 percent favorable rating, while the Republican Party stood at 37 percent.

CBS, in its write-up of the poll, pointed to additional evidence suggesting that McCain's VP pick is not wearing well: "Palin's favorable rating stands at 40 percent, down 4 points from last week. Her unfavorable rating, which stands at 30 percent, has risen eight points in the same time period. Her favorable rating among women has fallen 11 points in the past week." Palin's favorability ratings have also dropped steadily in tracking polls conducted by Hotline/Diageo and Research2000.

As Obama regains momentum in national surveys, the real question becomes: what will trends be over the next 48 days in the key battleground states that will, in fact, determine the outcome in the Electoral College?

Obama is the ideal candidate for this moment in American history.

He is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. What a relief, that after eight years of George W. Bush, a national disaster and international embarrasment, we will have a president who has the sound judgment to and future thinking mindset of what"s best not only for our country, but in the realm of international relations.

At a time when our national interest requires American to regain its standing as a world leader. Obams will not impulsively take us into another war unless American national interests are directly threatened.

He is able to take the bigger picture into account. It is time America for a leader who can provide real change.

Obama will not win this election.

Behind the curtain in the swing states they will not viote for him so these polls mean absolutely nothing!
All the talk about his ground campaigns could not even put Hillary away during the primaries.
Buyer's remorse? Redeem yourself....

Unless you've been involved in politics and actually campaigned for an individual beginning to end you really don't know how people think and vote.Yes,the primary race between Senator Clinton and Senator Obama was very close because there were two excellent politicians who are for the American people.I would've voted for either one who became the Presidential nominee. But I assure you Barack Obama will win the election in Nov. by 2 to 1 because the American people are alot smarter than the Republicans give them credit for.

People are jumping up and down a little too soon for me. As soon as Obama takes a healthy lead in Michigan, Wisconsin and possibly Ohio will give me a better feeling for the electorate.

These numbers do track ahead of the states, so some of those lean and tossups should be a little stronger now. Also, CBS/NYT said that Obama was leading women overall by about 13 points, and Caucasian women by 2.

That has to cause a significant amount of concern for McCain. His whole idea was snatch up history, and at this rate, Obama might get more women than Clinton did in '92.

But what do I know.....

How many Regan democrats want a left-wing collectivist in the White house, especially one who has no respect for them and their values? Even 'liberals' do not actually like to pay high taxes or want the economic pie to be made smaller. And nobody looks forward to a more authoritarian government, Who, for example, wants a government bureaucrat telling them which doctors to use, what medical care they can receive and when? How do real people of America, those who do the work, raise the families, pay the taxes, defend the nation and make America the truly exceptional place that it is, feel about an arrogant man whose self-esteem is so much greater than his accomplishments? Do they want a president who has seldom held a real job, never ran a business or done much of anything other than promote himself? The potential downside consequences of an Obama presidency are enormous.

Not to bust anyone's bubble but wake up America--Palin appeared frightened by Charlie Gibson's questions. She hadn't thoroughly memorized her answers and was caught off guard by other questions. Hillary Clinton would have been ready, confident, experienced, and, even grinned if Charlie trying to rankle her. But I tell you, McCain-Palin are going to WIN. Start referring to them as President McCain and VP Palin. Because we, the MEDIA, can't say one itty bitty mean word about Palin without appearing "meanies." Worn out Moms get a boast seeing Palin on TV, and oh isn't she pretty. But I tell you all one thing. When the Repubs win, and they will win--I do not want to hear ANYONE ever complain when Roe vs Wade is overturned, when Palin brings in HER God to to the White House, when any gun control laws are thrown out, all these things women stand for, Palin is against, even rape and molestation victims will be denied abortions. Like Bush, she hears God's voice telling her what to do. But she's a woman without any foreign policies and you, women, are so hyped and dizzy with excitement you go ahead and pull that lever and get them into the White House. No gun laws mean crime spress will overthrow your safe suburbs. McCain is a threat to China, Iran, and Russia (who all have nukes). But, I congratulate you now and announce McCain-Palin President McCain and Vice President Palin.

OUR GOVT IS UNDER FUNDED AND HAS BEEN FOR 8 YRS DEFINITELY.
TAXES ARE NECESSARY TO ENSURE OUR GOVT IS RUNNING RESPONSIBLY.
DE REGULATION AND UNDER FUNDING ARE ROOT CAUSES TO OUR CURRENT ECONOMIC DILEMMA
WHAT IS IT.........that make this so hard to admit, to see, to realize,
if we do not pay taxes the police do not come, the roads fall apart, we cannot respond to emergencies.
The Clinton Tax code produced economic surpluses and prosperity,.....Bush's tax cust were temporary when they were put in place...they are set to expire unless extended..........ANYWAY....
if everyone sits on their hands all taxes raise back tot the pre Bush days by law automatically...
so please do not talk to me about Obama raising taxes, on you, guess what Bush set up a temporary tax situation designed to revert back to the Clinton tax code, After he left office .......get it, you were hoodwinked, he know it could not pass or last as permanent tax cuts...........
so do not be a fool....review the facts.............

I think Willie Jeff could help the cause immeasurably if he restricts his canvassing to border/swing Southern States like MO, NC, VA. Flip one of those states from the party that plays off of divisiveness and bigotry for their own profit to Obama, and his chances of winning skyrocket.
