WASHINGTON — John McCain and Barack Obama are targeting each other's economic advisers in a new pair of dueling campaign ads.

Republican McCain released a new spot Thursday that quotes The Washington Post as saying Democrat Obama gets advice on mortgage and housing policy from a former Fannie Mae chief executive, Franklin Raines.

Obama responded with an ad about McCain's "fundamentally wrong" advisers. That's a play on McCain saying earlier this week, as turmoil rocked Wall Street, that the "fundamentals of our economy are strong." He later backtracked from the comment under criticism from Democrats, including Obama.

Obama's campaign says Raines is not an Obama adviser and that McCain's campaign knows it because Raines said so in an e-mail earlier this week to Carly Fiorina, a top McCain adviser. Obama's campaign provided The Associated Press with a copy of the e-mail.

"Carly: Is this true?" Raines asks above a forwarded note informing him that Fiorina was on television saying he was an Obama housing adviser. "I am not an adviser to the Obama campaign. Frank."

Obama's campaign says Fiorina did not respond.

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said he was not aware of the e-mail to Fiorina, but noted that the Post reported on three occasions, between July 16 and Aug. 28, that Raines was advising Obama.

"If he was not advising, obviously someone somewhere along the way should have corrected the record," Rogers said.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said he has since asked the Post for a correction. Burton said Obama only met Raines once briefly at an event, and that Raines sought an introductory meeting with Obama Senate aide Mike Strautmanis. At that meeting, Burton said no advice was sought from or given by Raines, who also had served as President Clinton's budget director.

"This is another flat-out lie from a dishonorable campaign that is increasingly incapable of telling the truth," Burton said. "Frank Raines has never advised Senator Obama about anything _ ever."

McCain's 30-second ad, titled "Advice," notes that Raines made millions and then left Fannie Mae while it was under investigation for accounting irregularities. The government took control of Fannie Mae earlier this month in an attempt to stabilize the housing market.

"Bad advice. Bad instincts. Not ready to lead," the ad says.

Obama's 30-second ad, titled "Who Advises," looks at McCain's economic advisers _ Fiorina, Phil Gramm and President Bush. It notes that Fiorina was fired as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard and that Gramm called Americans hurt by the economy a "nation of whiners." It also says McCain wants to continue Bush's policies.

"They think the economy is fundamentally strong. We know they're fundamentally wrong," Obama's ad says.

The Straight Talk Express is now the StraightJacket Express. America will reject this lunacy because Money trumps race and we need solutions for our economic life now. No one will trust a man who from Keating forward was on the take.

Here's the weird one, both attacks are legitimate

It's worth noting that I made a mistake, McCain's ad is spurious and false, but it's worth noting that Obama's real chief Financial Advisor, the Treasury Secretary under Clinton, spearheaded the campaign to deregulate the banking system during Clinton's first term.

Economic Advisors? We didn’t just wake up to find our country in financial mess. Where were all the brilliant economists, warnings & urgency? Why has this administration’s policies compromised our country’s fiscal stability & its security? Why is this country’s biggest export our American jobs?

This administration has borrowed billions of dollars from China, where Bush’s father was ambassador & he still has close ties. Billions of dollars are unaccounted & missing by Halliburton's no bid contracts. By the way, will the Drill Baby Drill mantra by the Republicans, mean Halliburton & Bechtel, also get contracts for drilling? Seems that our economy has been a money laundering plan by this administration. As they said during Watergate, follow the money!

How can McSame who supported deregulation all these years, now claim to be for regulation. Why can’t he admit that his policies are directly responsible for what is now happening. He's correct, there was someone asleep at the switch, and it was him. The only thing he wants to change, is the truth. Yes John, the chickens have come home to roost, & the fundamentals of our economy are not sound. McSame now looks like a dog chasing his tail. You can put lipstick on a Bear market, but it is still a Bear market. John, your lack of vision is not in America’s best interests. It'is time for real change in America. We need to take our country back from what this Republican administration has done to us. That is

Were all McC's speeches today about how Barack Obama singlehandedly caused the current economic crisis?
02:25 PM on 09/19/2008
Clearly, Barack Obama is far more Sophisticated when it comes to the Economy, he has a more comprehensive understanding and was looking very Presidential today!

John McCain looks Lost and Angry!!

Do you want this guy Treasury Secretary? Phil Gramm

The guy who helped create this financial mess by Deregulating Banking practices could be in charge of our Economic Policy if McCain wins.

We the American People are now on the hook to pay the tab for the Republicans' "Drunken Sailors" Party, while we go without universal health care, affordable higher education, lose our pensions, social security, our homes and lose our jobs to overseas workers.

Capitalism only works in a continuing democracy with regulations and stringent oversight, both of which are anathema to Republicans. The D.C. court docket should be filled right now with criminal complaints against Republicans, starting with Boosh, Dick C.hen.ey and Mr. & Mrs. Phil G'ramm. Instead, Republicans will be using the next four months at their paper shredders, wiping out their computers and Blackberries, arranging pardons and retroactive immunity. This didn't begin with Boosh and Dick C'hen.ey's administration, but was brought to fruition by them, after 30 years of incremental building blocks had been strategically laid out for a full-out raid on the U.S. Treasury.

The question now is: What is being used to secure this deal?

Well, Obama Having Warren Buffett as a key adviser is not a bad thing! Thanks Warren!

Vs. Phil Gramm - The Architect of McCain's Economic Plan & "the Architect of "Deregulation"!
Nice job greedy bastrds

Clearly, Barack Obama is far more Sophisticated when it comes to the Economy and you can see he has a more comprehensive understanding and looked very confident and Presidential! John McCain looks Lost!!

If I was Barack, I would talk about...
Keating-Five - Because we haven't seen a scandal/crisis like this since the S&L scandal.

The media is afraid to say the words "Keating-5" but let's face it McCain was involved with that and this may be a little karma coming back to haunt him!

Clueless McCain. The Herbert Hoover of 2009. One of the principal post Reagan de-regulatory architects of this fiasco, he has absolutely no place at the table. Along with Greenspan, Gramm and numerous others.

I've always felt that the warm, gooey feelings many Americans get, swaying to the dreamy lullabies of "trickle down" capitalism,...are just banks, investment firms and hedge funds...peeing on your leg!

McCain has had lots of practice, all the way back to the S&L Scandal and the Keating 5. Many of his current "advisers" were holding his hand then.

I'll make it simple:

- McCain Advisors = Bush Clowns Who Got Us Into This Mess

- Obama Advisors = Clinton Brain Trust Who Gave Us a Surplus, Lower Unemployment and Prosperity.

Duh!!!!

This has absolutely nothing to do with this particular topic but right now I'm watching Barack Obama in Coral Gables Florida addressing "Moms for Obama" and talking about the economy. Part way into his speech there was a small group protesting against Obama and he was so cool handling those protesters at this old man wanted to jump up and cheer for him. In no way was Obama disrespectful to the protesters, he acknowledged they could show their signs and asked only that they allow him to continue his speech.

THIS IS THE TYPE OF DIPLOMACY WE NEED IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Didn't Phil Gram write the enron loop-hole legislation that broke down the barriers between banks, investors and insurance companies that were erected after the depression? I mean really, who is receiving the better advice?
12:58 PM on 09/19/2008
Yes! Phil Gramm wrote the CFMA Commodity Futures Modernization Act during a recess in 1999. It was signed into law Dec 21, 2000. Wasn't John McCain one of the 'Keating 5' also? Didn't they create the S&L Scandal that resulted in the RTF?

Both Gramm and Enron, on whose Board Gramm's wife sat, at the time. authured
The Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which caused the dilemma the financial
world finds itself in today.

Obama's press conference today was the most presidential conference that I have seen in 9 to 10 years. Very, very impressive. This man is our next president, or we are all doomed.

Barack Obama's a pretty sharp guy, you know.

Senators John Glenn and John McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised "poor judgment".
