Jobs

In another sign of how John McCain is trying to turn the political world on its head (in which he is a populist and the Democrats have been setting the agenda for the last eight years) his campaign put out an ad on Friday blaming Barack Obama for the outsourcing of American jobs.

Titled "Overseas," the spot accuses the Illinois Democrat of pursuing policies that make it prohibitively expensive for business to operate domestically. In this case, the ad is tailored for a Michigan audience.

"Michigan manufacturing jobs are going overseas," the narrator says. "Barack Obama and his liberal allies are to blame. When manufacturers needed help making health care more affordable, they voted no. So jobs go overseas. Help to reduce energy costs? No. More jobs overseas. Lower taxes? No. Even more jobs overseas. They don't understand. Their votes cost Michigan jobs."

Keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of the job losses in Michigan and other Midwestern states have occurred under the administration of Republican President George W. Bush. Add to that the fact that the free trade deals considered responsible for much of this development are supported by McCain and opposed -- on the basis that there need to be more labor protections -- by Obama. And couple it with Obama's proposal to spend over $200 billion on new jobs (a program that will undoubtedly be revised in the wake of this current economic crisis and forthcoming bailout), and it is hard to see how this ad doesn't stir strenuous objection.

The republicans had a stranglehold on all 3 branches of government for 6 years, and now of course everything is the democratic party's fault. And in the spirit of vagueness, the commercial never mentions any legislation Obama suposedly voted against. But it's actually fun to watch McCain not being able to decide whether he should portray Barack Obama as an inexperieced politician who hasn't been in Washington long enough, or an evil genius who's pulling all the strings behind the scenes in Washington.

You just can't win against the Republican spin machine. Where are all the Obama ads? All I see are McCain's on every channel.

McCain is behind Obama in the polls, even with the sh** sunami he's putting out in the media, and it's only going to get worse for McCain after the debates.

I may be naive and I may be an optimist, but I think, and hope, that my fellow citizens are too intelligence to fall for McCain's repeated lies. He is only shaming himself and insulting our intelligence.

Well, I hope you are right, because it was this kind of thinking that had something to do with the fall of union power. The people who were jealous of the union workers, like in the auto plants where people without a HS education were making more than people with college degrees, these very people who thought we didn't need unions, because some people made too much money in the car plants, are partially to blame for the fall of the unions. Now, these same people could very well be "misguided" enough to believe this bunk. Those who say "people get the president they deserve," are right and the rest of us have to suffer, and suffer and suffer. True, we will all suffer, but those of us who a brain are the ones who suffer the most, because we know this is an outright lie. Of course, Clinton did go whole hog for globalization as far as I know, but to blame Obama is plain spin.

That is worth repeating because it is SO true.

What is it about a college degree that makes one incapable of organizing in the interests of ones' own profession? Even professional societies that have the name "Union" in them -- the American Geophysical Union for example -- wouldn't know a collective bargaining unit if it bit them in the arse.

This topic is worth exploring further.

I think computer programmers, for example, should have a union -- and system operators and administrators for sure. These days it's skilled labor.

During the last 5 years as CEO of Lehman Bros., Richard S. Fuld"s total take was $354 Million.

John A. Thain, the chairman of Merrill Lynch, who has been on the job just nine months, pocketed a $15 Million signing bonus. While his predecessor, F. Stanley O"Neal, retired with a package worth $161 Million. Merrill Lynch recorded an $8 BILLION loss in a single quarter.

Bear Stearns Chairman James Cayne was able to pocket $60 Million by selling his shares AFTER the collapse.

Richard F. Syron and Daniel H. Mudd, the former heads of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae (respectively) are fighting to get their separation packages for a total of $24 Million combined, on TOP of what each earned last year as they rode the bucking steer into the ground.

Meanwhile, the citizens are being asked to fork out $700 BILLION in bail outs for the bad debt and compromised loans, on top of nearly $1 TRILLION in hand-outs here and there for the last few weeks (Bear Sterns, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, and AIG).

And WHY aren"t we asking for those funds back? WHY don"t people who fail in the highest seats lose ANYTHING? How can they get away with carpet bags filled with BILLIONS of dollars while millions of Americans are on the verge of losing their homes, and businesses are losing access to important loans for the next several years?

I Want. That Money. Back.

A most excellent point, and perfectly valid question. I couldn't agree more, these folks should have to hand over everything they have to reimburse the companies and the taxpayers that have to now clean up their mess. I expect my grandchildren will be paying for this round of Republican de-regulations.

Is this what Obama and 3rd Party candidates are really up against?

It's your democracy. It's your country. Now that you know, what will you do about it?

Shed apathy. Spread the word.

John McCain has clearly sold his soul to win this election. You never know what he's going to say each day (apparently he doesn't know either) but you know it is going to be loaded with lies. What a total lack of leadership.

And that's great. Every lie becomes an ad opportunity for us. I say we aggressively take advantage of each and every one of those opportunities and cut the repubs off at the knees. My vision for the aftermath of the election is that the repub partry is a mere fraction of it's former self, limping along aimlessly in the desert of failed policies and bad karma.

One thing I can say about McCain is that he is BOLD .................... A BOLD FACED LIAR.

The SAME McCain who for 26 years has been supporting DEREGULATION and and ardent proponent of NAFTA, and sending jobs overseas to take advantage of CHEAP LABOR, and ultimately INCREASE THE PROFITS FOR THE MEGA-WEALTHY 1% OF AMERICA.

This is the same man who SAYS HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE ECONOMY, and the ONLY solution he has to solve the financial market crisis is to FORM A 9/11 COMMISSION ............. A tactic to deflect from the fact that HE HAS NO ANSWERS.

But wasn't there ALREADY a 9/11 Commission? ........................ If McCain at least wanted to sound smart, he should have at least called for a FINANCIAL MARKET COMMISSION............... But he is too dumb to even do that.................

Methinks he called for ANOTHER 9/11 Commission is because he wants the campaign to revert to National Security and away from the Economy.
