WASHINGTON — Democrat Barack Obama is airing a new ad in New Mexico and Ohio that defends his abortion rights record and says Republican rival John McCain backs a party platform that would deny abortions to victims of rape and incest.

Obama's ad answers an independent ad campaign, financed by an anti-abortion philanthropist, that singles out Obama's efforts in the Illinois Senate to defeat the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.

"Now votes taken out of context, accusing Obama of letting infants die? It's a despicable lie," Obama's ad states.

As an Illinois state senator, Obama opposed three legislative efforts in 2001, 2002 and 2003 to give legal protections to any aborted fetus that showed signs of life. The 2003 measure was virtually identical to a bill President Bush signed into law in 2002 that unanimously passed the U.S. Senate.

Obama and other opponents of the Illinois bill have noted the state already had a law to protect aborted fetuses born alive and considered able to survive. Moreover, they said the proposed legislation would have undermined the landmark Supreme Court case on abortion, Roe v. Wade, in ways the federal law would not. Among those opposed to the state effort was the Illinois State Medical Society, which argued that the bill would interfere with the doctor-patient relationship and expand civil liability for doctors.

The independent ad is being aired by BornAliveTruth.org, specifically targeting Albuquerque, N.M., and Cleveland markets. The Obama ad is appearing in the same markets.

The BornAliveTruth ad, financed by prominent Massachusetts anti-abortion figure Raymond Ruddy, features Gianna Jessen, a 31-year-old motivational speaker from Nashville, Tenn., who adopted as a child after a failed abortion. "Sen. Obama, please support born alive infant protections. I'm living proof these babies have a right to live."

Obama's ad links McCain to the independent ad, though the McCain campaign did not pay for or air it.

"McCain, he's running on a platform to ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest," Obama's ad says. "Sleazy ads, anti-choice, that's John McCain."

The Republican platform approved at the party's national convention earlier this month asserts the GOP's opposition to abortion, including in cases of rape, incest or to protect the life of the mother.

McCain has supported such exemptions in the past, but did not try to alter the party's stance at the convention.

Jill Stanek, a nurse and anti-abortion activist who organized BornAliveTruth, said Obama still needs to explain his votes. "These babies have the same rights as the rest of us," she said in response to Obama's ad.

Barack Obama is the reason why I'm pro-choice. Too bad abortion wasn't an option for his mother.

J*ll St@nek - learn to read and maybe, just maybe, you will understand why Barack voted as he did.
He has explained why, now all you need to do is stop believing everything you hear and do some research on your own.

The man is certainly and literally sick, and could be with Alzheimers desease. I think , for the good of the country , he must be subjected to a full medical examination. and if he really beleives in himself as a mavrick and patriot,he must do this single important service to his country that is to go through a medical examination. We appreciate him doing so . because i know if the result comes back positive he will excuse himself to avoid this great nation from further damge.

Alaskan Daily News has a report that there is a recall petition that has been drafted to recall Sara Palin as Governor of Alaska. The petition is based on the following: “…Governor Palin reneging on her promise to be open, transparent, and to cooperate with the investigation of Troopergate is a betrayal of her compact with Alaskans. Alaskans do not care who you were, what you want to be, or where you are going. But do NOT lie to us. We are not like the lower 48. In the lower 48, having a flat tire is not a matter of life and death. And lying to Alaskan voters about your full cooperation in an investigation is a flat tire.”

The recall petition simply requires the signature of 100 register Alaskan voters, to be turned into the AK Division of Elections. After which the State Elections Division will distribute recall petition booklets will be distributed and the signatures of qualified voters in at least 30 election districts must be gathered. After this is completed a recall election will be held and if that election is successful (ie: receives a majority of votes) Sara Palin will be removed as the Governor of Alaska.

A total of 238,307 votes were cast in Alaska gubernatorial election. Of these, 122,625 went to a candidate other than Sarah Palin who got 114,697.

In short 51.5% of Alaskan voters did NOT want Sarah Palin as Governor.

They had a Ralph Nader type of candidate in the mix - otherwise, she may not be Governor today. So all this parroting of an 80 percent favorable nonsense is in question just like everything else she has ever said.

Given these facts, coupled with all the new revalatory information dessimminated to the public about Palin including the above and charging Alaskans to stay in her own home, squandering of taxpayers money on excessive personal and family travel and expenses and a ton of other shockingly irresponsible activities in only 16 months validates the evidence of the need for a recall.

Who is Sarah Palin to tell me what to do with my own body? Isn't this a free country?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:16 AM on 09/22/2008

Well, that is the question isn't it? The answer is.... it depends. It depends who we put in office this time around. Because it's all on the line this time, and anyone who tells you different is lying. Get your friends, your relatives, your neighbors and everyone you know to tell you if they are registered to vote. Impress upon them that the future of our country, our freedom, and the legacy we leave our kids is on the line. It is time to stand up. Our moment is here.... volunteer, register voters, donate, hold campaign events, this this the time!!!! Make it happen. don't hesitate... don't slow down, don't look back!!!!

"This is not a drill. This IS an actual emergency!"

Get your smears straight on the right for women to choose. Obama is a champion of women's right of choice therefore Obama and other opponents of the Illinois bill said the proposed legislation would have undermined the landmark Supreme Court case on abortion, Roe v. Wade.

Here's a question for Ms. Palin. Let's say a young girl, 12 or 13, is raped by a close male relative (brother, father, grandfather) and becomes pregnant. Now let's say that girl is Ms. Palin's daughter. According to her stated policy, she would force her daughter to carry the product of an incestuous rape to term regardless of the psychological trauma and possible physical ramifications, and send her to prison if she had an abortion. What a Mom! And you want this as your VP? Send her back to Alaska, where they are beginning to beat the drums for a recall.

Of course, birth control. But birth control is not infallible. Personally, I would not have an abortion, but the point is that the decision is mine, not the government's. I do not think I or anyone else has the right to make that decision for another person, because every person's circumstances are different. Once pregnancies become more advanced, then more regulations should kick in, but not during the first three months.

Have you ever bothered to look into the three effects that hormonal birth control has on the woman's body? Do you have any comprehension of how in cases of accidental ovulation and possible fertilization, that embryo is nicely FLUSHED out with the hormonal impact on the endometrial tissue?

Just when does life begin and when is it not all right to get rid of it?

I'll never understand why the party that is FOR smaller government and personal responsibility has taken such a hard line stance on this issue. It seems to me that a woman saying, "I'm not ready to be a mother," is the most responsible decision she could make!

I've brought this up with some Republican friends and their silence is amazing. It's like they've never thought of it that way.

I'd like to see less talk about abortion, creationism V.S evolution and same sex marriage. These are isssues that should not be part of national political debates... These are very personal issues that should be decided by each individual.

I've grown tired of the "issues" that are used to devided us... These hot button issues are used to distract us from the National debt, War, Health Care, Education, et al... It's time to demand that our politions stick to the issues that UNITE ALL Americans ... TAXES and how they are spent.

A people united will never be defeated, yet our politians use these emotional issues to divide us.

Let us not forget that our Grand and Great grand parents came to this country to be free, to make personal decisions like choice or no choice of religion, to have or not to have children/ get married, and so on... It's time to demand that these issues be removed from debate and to allow individuals to truely be free to decide what is best for them.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:07 PM on 09/21/2008

Senator Obama would be DELIGHTED to stick to the issues!!! The one who keeps dragging non-issue "issues" into the picture is McCain, who's still in a "Barack-Obama-won't-agree-to-my-ten-town-hall-meeting-proposal" snit.

I would agree with you on two of the topics, but the "creationism V.S evolution" debate is about accepting a proven process for understanding the REAL WORLD. To put it bluntly, to be a creationist in the 21st century is equivalent to thinking the Earth is flat, even while taking airplane flights across the globe. The evolutionary connectedness of life is A FACT, how it came to be is explained by one of the best-supported theories in Science - evolution.

You simply do not get to repudiate the underpinnings of biology, medicine, geology and more by claiming a religious exemption. Final note- I would like somebody to ask this question of our newest energy expert, Sarah Palin:

"Where does oil come from?"

Unfortunately, the personal beliefs get in the way of funding for access to products and information. If your representation believes you should just say no, they probably believe you don't need prevention funded.

It are always the Priests, Pastors and MEN like the Massachusetts anti-abortion figure Raymond Ruddy who tell us WOMEN what to do when we are pregnant. And of course women like Governor Sarah Palin who are guided by their Pastor and the Bible. How many men get away with their part of the act of conceiving life to be never heard of anymore but believe they can tell us women what to do?

Sarah's Right to Choose

The way I see Sarah Palin's view on abortion is that it's hypocritical

We shall call it Sarah's choice

Sarah would only allow abortion - in cases where the mother's life was in danger.

We'll call Sarah the mother ~ who has to choose between saving her own life or her baby's

And from what Sarah says ~ given the choice ~ it's the baby's life that will be aborted

In other words Sarah P would abort her own baby to save herself.

I would have thought she'd have chosen something more like Jesus ~ you know ~ what greater man is he who gives up his life for another.

Not Sarah ~ she'll abort her own baby like all the other women she condemns ~ to save her own self.

Isn’t this baby's life precious too ~ from the moment of conception?

So while Sarah gets to choose whether to abort her baby or not ~ because let's face it this baby's life doesn't have to be aborted

While Sarah gets the right to choose for her own personal reasons ~ she would prevent others from doing so for their own reasons.

If abortion is legal for Sarah to save herself ~ surely she could understand why a victim of rape or incest might not want to go through with the pregnancy. If Sarah can choose ~ versus the allowing of no abortion at all ~ shouldn't others have the right to choose?

Gov. Sarah Palin, when she was Mayor of Wasila, AK, had a direct role in charging rape victims for exams. Palin charged Wasila, AK rape victims $300 to $1200 for rape kits.

And there is the news that John McCain, in 1994, voted against legislation -- pushed through Congress by Obama's V.P. Sen. Joe Biden -- that helped put an end to the practice of charging rape victims for sexual assault exams. In fact, McCain not only opposed Biden's legislation, but also has voted against funding it as recently as October 2007 - LAST YEAR!!! Here is the link about that: http://www.jedreport.com/2008/09/mccain-voted-against-biden-law.html.

When I saw Palin's signature on the document authorizing rape victims be charged and saw where she signs off with "Respectfully Yours", I was mortified. The words "Respectfully Yours" on that document is a slap in the face because there is nothing "respectful" about being raped. Its already a wretchedly painful experience, only to be charged for the rape exam that you may not have any money for.

But on top of that, McCain and Palin oppose EQUAL PAY for EQUAL WORK for Women legislation that Obama and Biden support. McCain and Palin want to criminalize abortion rights, while Palin opposes abortion in cases of rape and incest - an extreme position for sure. And, she cut funding for teen mothers and W.I.C. (women, infants, children) recipients, and she slashed over $270,000 out of Alaska's Special Olympics budget.
