McCain Camp Goes To War With New York Times

It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record but nevertheless the scourge of many a conservative.

John McCain was different. He enjoyed close relations with much of the fourth estate and, it was reported, took particular delight in winning plaudits from editorial boards, including that of the Times.

That McCain is no longer. Today, the Arizona Republican's presidential campaign went to war with the Grey Lady. Asked to respond to an article that brought to light the fact that McCain campaign manager Rick Davis had earned nearly $2 million in lobbying fees from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (based, almost primarily, on his access to McCain) at the same time that he was attacking Barack Obama for his own ties to those very institutions, aides to McCain went off.

"We are first amendment absolutists on this campaign and the press and everyone who wishes to cover this race from a blogosphere and media perspective is constitutionally protected to write whatever they want," said Steve Schmidt, the campaign's chief strategist. "But whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Gov. Palin and excuses Sen. Obama. There is no public vetting... there is no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads... This is an organization that is completely and totally 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate.... Everything that is read in the New York Times should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective. It is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and advocate for the defeat of one candidate and the election of another."

Davis himself provided a more cordial, yet equally indignant, response.

"First of all, I appreciate all the exposure I get from the New York Times," he said. "I feel like they must have some sort of Davis envy going on... I was the public face of an organization that promoted home ownership for many years. And Fannie and Freddie were a part of 19 organizations in that group... I never lobbied a single day. Sure, I had relationships there. But you will also notice John McCain's track record even when I was involved in the home ownership alliance... I'm not exactly sure what the tie in is. You look at the track record for Barack Obama when it comes to having friends at the highest levels," and it's the opposite, Davis said.

Usually, going to war with the press produces fantastic results for Republican candidates. It rallies the compassion and support of conservative voters while encouraging more negative coverage on the opposition (driven by an editorial decision by the paper that their reporting must be more "even-handed.") But this campaign has proven a bit different. News outlets have called McCain out for his distortions lies with a general tone of confidence. We shall see how the Times' responds to this latest salvo.

It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record ...

"...according to the New York Times, and they are hardly ever wrong, ..." - Sarah Palin, October 4, 2008

Anybody read The New York Post lately? Talk about being 150 per cent in the tank for one candidate -- jeeeez! The Post is comical in its desperate attempts to slant every last piece of news to benefit the McCain campaign.

But I don't hear any complaints from Steve Schmidt about that. In fact, I don't hear any complaints from the Obama campaign about the many newspapers that clearly favor McCain and spin the news on his behalf.

And you know why we don't hear any complaints from the Obama campaign. Because they actually respect the First Amendment.

I say, complain all you want, Johnny Boy. But when you start barring reporters from having the regular old traditional access to you, then you've crossed over the line into regular old traditional fascist behavior.

All you McCain supporters out there? You support censorship like this? You like fascist behavior? Because that's obviously what you're going to get if you put this petty tyrant in the White House.

What? Media bias all in our minds... ?
Not a chance! Big media ignores stories that Democrats pocketed funds doled out by bankers and managers at Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, etc. Obama took in quite a chunk from Fannie and Freddie--$100,000+. Pelosi and other Democrats were champing at the bit to back Bush's $700 billion sinkhole, until taxpayers balked. (Nobody thought it odd that Pelosi jumped in quickly to agree with Bush on the bailout. She only changed her tune when she found that Republican lawmakers weren't gonna jump in the backseat with her and her oddly newfound bedfellow.)

The media also gave a pass to Obama's so-called economic advisor, Franklin Raines. Raines resigned, wealthy-but-disgraced, from Fannie Mae, after his creative accounting practices started this economic mudslide. Ironically, McCain warned of this in 2006 and tried to reform the program. He didn't try hard enough, apparently, and the backlash is hitting him full force now. Listening to Wednesday's news, one would think McCain was solely to blame for this mess. Obama, according to CBS, CNN et al, is the shining knight who will get us all out of this. Presto! Chang-o! For once, Bush is not being portrayed as the great Satan--McCain is more powerful even than the president (this election season).

The danger of media bias is that people watching the "news" may think that it's NEWS. Lot's of people are wiser now. Don't try to put that cat back in the bag!

Hey it works. How many posts on this blog whine about the unfairness of the media? Why not just poke them in the eye and say we don't care what you report? We won't support your paid political editors anymore.

the issues are:

palin is being investigated for abuse of power .

she and her husband have violated court ordered subpoena's

mccain is obstructing justice, by interfering in the investigation.

isn't this illegal? i am 100% certain if barak obama's vp had done the same, he would not be the nominee, would he?

they are not allowing reporters to ask unscripted questions.

they are denying reporters access to her foreign policy improv's.

is the mccain palin ticket above the law?

have they rewritten the rules as we watch?

are they setting in motion the new standard for the press in the mccain /palin regime?

how far will they go?

what is next ?

isn't this illegal?

No it isn't. You have the right to attempt to quash any subpoena and you don't have to testify if it will incriminate you. That's why we have lawyers. To protect our rights.

And, if the legislature is using a subpoena for political purposes [shocking, isn't it?] you can drag it out past the election and it becomes moot.

McSame is an empty shell of his former self and McPalin is just a puppet that is controlled by the master puppeteer Karl Rove and company. The winds of change are blowing and will take all of them someplace far away once and for all.....far far away from DC...off to Arizona and Alaska. Good riddance can't come soon enough. Maybe he'll drop Cindy and shack up with McPalin like he did with his first wife.....Todd won't care...she's done it before.

Better to be a shadow of your former formidable self than to have no shadow at all. Obama has done nothing of note in his career to make him qualified to the office. Palin, on her first day as mayor of a small town, had more experience that Obama does right now.

Hillary and Biden both said Obama was not qualified to be President.

Transparent and straight talk my right eye! This is why we question the validity of a Mccain presidency!

A quick line item of "the conservative' legacy" during the past eight years...

The worst election fraud in history - the 2000 presidential election...

The first Major attack against America in the lower 48… (9/11)

The first American attack against a sovereign country in history - Iraq, all based on subversion and duplicity...there were no WMDs!

The worst federal handling of a catastrophic even in American History, Katrina...

The worst time period in American history for privatizing the federal institutions of war, education, prison, etc.
There still trying to get our social security and give it to the stock market!

The largest federal debt in American history...from great prosperity to collapse in just 8 years!

The worst collapse of our mortgage, banking and lending institutions to date...
I could go on all day...i get sick to my stomach!

So is this what happens when you elect two GOP ex-oilmen to run our nation?

And now the right wing wants to give us McCain, a 95% mirrored image of past failed GOP policies and Palin, who is more to the right then Bush/Cheney: an absolute dolt, no intelligence...
just more of that self-righteous underachiever garbage that Bush represents!

Dump the GOP presidental race- "thats real change we can believe in!"

"The worst election fraud in history - the 2000 presidential election..."

I love the rewriting of history. Do you mean the democratic attempt to disenfranchise the military absentee ballots?

Or were you referring to the fact that if Gore has won his own state he would have won the election.

Oh, and don't forget. The democrats have been in control of Congress for the past two years. You remember Congress. The have the committees on banking and have oversight of these things that have now tanked.

nice job in Congress, democrats.

If there's an electoral college tie (269-269) between Obama and McCain, then the House votes to select the winner. With a Democratic House, you'd think, cool no-brainer, Obama wins right? WRONG!
With Lieberman voting as a Republican, there's a 50-50 tie in the House. In that situation, the current Vice President would need to step in and do his job as the tie-breaker in the House.
Dick Cheney rules the world!

I think you mean the Senate, not the House.

History will record McCain's greatest campaign error in 2008 was attacking the press. I remember reporters right after the GOP convention looking stunned and personnally hurt that their "friend" was taking them on. They enjoyed being chummy for so long with the candidate. Reporters used to look the other way or mention his gaffes only in passing. Now the gloves are off. Every McCain inconsistency, error or lie will now be printed, broadcast or blogged in bold type for the masses.

"150% in the tank for Obama"

See, it's that understanding of numbers that caused this financial mess in the first place.

steve schmidts main problem seems to be that the times continues to report on shady connections and dealings within the mccain campaign, while not reporting the same sorts of things about the obama camp.well, maybe the obama people simply dont have those types of issues going on,or at least not nearly to the same extent as mccain.it reminds me of all the whining and boo-hooing conservatives have done over the past seven 1/2 years about all the reporting on pres. bush's many scandals, lies, gaffes, and borderline criminal conduct.if george "mission accomplished" bush wasnt behaving that way,i suppose there wouldnt be so many unflattering stories to report, would there?

"..well,maybe the obama people simply dont have those types of issues going on ... "

Funny - I was listening to the larry king show on cnn last night and he had bey buchannan on discussing the same issue. larry questioned the negative/inaccurate attacks and her response was something like: WELL WE HAVE TO DO THAT BECUASE HE HAS SUCH LIMITED EXPERIENCE. Hearing that I thought I would die from laughter. These clowns have the gall to say we will lie when we cannot find specifics in your background to attack. A pathetic buch.
