For a party that rails against the New York Times, the Republicans sure depend on the Grey Lady to score political points.

Since the end of the primary, John McCain's campaign has sent at least 60 emails to its rapid response list that reference the New York Times. They have used the paper to repeatedly knock Obama for voting "present" in the Illinois State Senate. They have used it to defend McCain's record on Jack Abramoff, to accuse Obama of flip-flopping on Iraq, and to bolster the case for vice presidential pick Sarah Palin.

"New York Times: Governor Palin 'Took Intense Criticism From Members Of Her Own Party For Turning The Spotlight On The Failures Of Alaska Republicans,'" read one McCain campaign press release.

Moreover, since July 1, the RNC and the McCain campaign have sent out at least 38 press releases that reference the Times, while, since the end of July, the RNC has sent out at least 65 emails that quote the paper. Three days ago came a Times article with the heading, "Republicans Denounce Obama Fund-Raising Pic." A week before we had, "NYT - Campaign Says Biden Son Dropped Lobbying Clients." A day before that there was, "NYT - Those Awaiting Biden Gaffes Aren't Disappointed." And two days before then, the RNC emailed, "NYT - Obama Looks to Lessons From Chicago in His National Education Plan."

On Monday, however, aides to McCain needed a scapegoat, or at least a political whipping post. And so, when asked about an article from this morning, which illuminated the lobbying work campaign manager Rick Davis has done on behalf of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, senior strategist Steve Schmidt absolutely unloaded on the Times.

"Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization," he said. "It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Gov. Palin and excuses Sen. Obama.... This is an organization that is completely and totally 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate."

Right. Keep in mind that it was just yesterday that McCain himself told CNBC that he welcomed the vetting of Davis "by anybody who wants to look at it."

Or, as Barack Obama's campaign quickly noted, that the Times has run more than 40 stories on his childhood, politics, time in the state senate, religion, family and friends.

Moreover, within hours of Schmidt ripping the paper, the Republican National Committee sent out an email to reporters that actually referenced an article that ran in the Times, highlighting the work of vice presidential candidate Joseph Biden's son.

For its part, the Times senior staff seem unaffected by Schmidt's attempt to tar their coverage. In a statement to Politico, executive editor Bill Keller wrote:

"The New York Times is committed to covering the candidates fully, fairly and aggressively. It's our job to ask hard questions, fact-check their statements and their advertising, examine their programs, positions, biographies and advisors. Candidates and their campaign operatives are not always comfortable with that level of scrutiny, but it's what our readers expect and deserve."

The Times is consistent in lying about Republicans so why be surprised they're “in the tank for Obama.” In 1909 they detested Theodore Roosevelt so to undermine his Panama Canal efforts they declared he had “had mismanaged it so badly that the Canal had to be begun anew in Nicaragua.” They never printed a correction and in 1914 when the Canal was opened, they announced this great engineering feat on page 14. Up until then they left their readers believing the Canal moved to Nicaragua!
When McCain campaign advisor Steve Schmidt pointed out “..the New York Times ...is today not by any standard a journalistic organization… it is completely, totally, 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate,.” Times executive editor Bill Keller responded “The Times is committed to covering the candidates fully, fairly and aggressively.” He failed to mention “aggressively” only applied to Republicans.
During a CBS News Couric interview, Biden said "Part of what being a leader ...is to instill confidence ..... When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on television and ....said, 'look, here's what happened.'"
Two problems with Biden’s history, the market crashed in 1929 and Roosevelt wasn’t president until 1933 and Television hadn’t been invented…. Other than that Biden got it right. But then again, the NYT never bothered to report this as how out of touch Biden is with reality….. so much for “aggressive” reporting.
You gotta appreciate consistency…. anyone for a trip through the Nicaragua Canal?

If McCain tries to control the freedom of the press now, what do you think he will do if he gets into office? Everytime he makes a blunder it will become a cover-up. He is famous in this campaign for his lies and won't forget how to tell them if he makes it to the Presidency. McBush will not get my vote.
He and his Republican friends have done nothing for me. I wish my state of WV would see that. I even heard Senator Byrd criticized on Fox News for being a KKK. They were bringing that out because he is an Obama supporter. You can say all you want about Senator Obama but, he sure does try to be the best he can be. He even submitted himself to an interview on Fox knowing that he would be criticized. McCain even complains about being provoked by the women on "The View". Palin can't even answer questions without the "Wise One" watching over her? Now who that is I'm not sure. It could be the wonderful Karl Rove? I'm sure we can always find someone else to blame for our mistakes. If we can't bring them down, tell a good lie. Senator Obama sure has faced a million of them. The young Senator deserves the badge of courage for what he has faced trying to lead this country. If so many young people are coming out to vote for Obama why can't we listen to them?

Of course, citing a paper doesn't mean you don't think it is "in the tank". I would say that National Review is "in the tank" for conservatives, but if it ran an article that supported my point of view I would be eager to use it because conservatives couldn't say it was an untrustworth, left-leaning publication.

Will McCain and his handlers ever wise up to how much damage this war on the press is doing their cause?

Today in Media Pa. ...right outside Philly....McCain/Palin had a rally.
Well.......they bused in thousands of supporters. They bused in school children4n...wtf?
See pic on front page of Huffpo...I'm assuming that was from the rally today.
I heard that the media had to wait to be given the cue...as to when to record footage........and on cue the mob just went wild...they had pom poms...signs, banners....
The cameras turned off and so did the crowd.

Ok...question is......why are they doing this? I get that they want to give the illusion of excitement...and selling Palin.....I get that but what does it accomplish really?
IMO...they are fixing to cheat...they are getting ready to rig the vote....again.

The sad thing is, McCain and Palin have a legit chance to win this thing - but if they don't, they will go down in history as one of the biggest joke-tickets the country has seen. Think about what that says.

This is a PERFECT SONG for the Obama/Biden campaign.

LYRICS:

Now's the time for all good men
to get together with one another.
We got to iron out our problems
and iron out our quarrels
and try to live as brothers.

And try to find a piece of land
without stepping on one another.

And do respect the women of the world.
Remember you all have mothers.

We got to make this land a better land
than the world in which we live.

And we got to help each man be a better man
with the kindness that we give.

I know we can make it.
I know darn well we can work it out.
Oh yes we can, I know we can can
Yes we can can, why can't we?
If we wanna get together we can work it out.

And we gotta take care of all the children,
the little children of the world.
'cause they're our strongest hope for the future,
the little bitty boys and girls.

We got to make this land a better land
than the world in which we live.

And we got to help each man be a better man
with the kindness that we give.

I know we can make it.
I know darn well we can work it out.

Oh yes we can, I know we can can
yes we can can, why can't we?
If we wanna, yes we can can.
