Tina Fey's Emmy Night: Humble, Wants To Stop Playing Sarah Palin

LOS ANGELES — Isn't it just like Tina Fey to have something go haywire on the night she's recognized for her many talents?

"If anyone's seen my purse," Fey announced to reporters backstage after winning three Emmys, "I left it under my seat."

It might have been the first thing the "30 Rock" mastermind did wrong all night after picking up trophies for outstanding comedy writing, comedy series and lead actress in a comedy.

When prodded by reporters, she humbly dodged praise and questions about her contributions.

"I think our cast is diverse and talented," she said in one breath.

"We've had the greatest guest stars," she said in another.

"Alec (Baldwin) elevates the show to another level with his abilities," she said.

She even shrugged off her resemblance to Gov. Sarah Palin, whom she won raves for portraying on the season premiere of NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

"But then my kid saw her on TV and said, `That's Mommy!'" she said.

She was more open about her thoughts on reprising the "SNL" role. As in, she'd prefer not to.

"I want to be done playing this lady Nov. 5," she said. "So if anybody can help me be done playing this lady Nov. 5, that would be good for me."

Television comedy's Jill-of-all-trades has always been self-deprecating, mining her apparent struggle with life's chaos for her character on "30 Rock," her self-portrayal in a new series of American Express commercials and the persona she presents to the public.

But to win TV's top honors for creating, writing and starring in her own television show might've been more than even Fey can deflect. When cornered to say how she felt about the different Emmys, she finally turned off the modesty. Kinda.

"They look identical," Fey quipped. "Alec was just saying to me backstage that maybe this means I can now stop apologizing for being an actor and writing on the show. The one for the show, that really belongs to everybody, so I don't like it as much."

During his acceptance speech for lead comedy actor for "30 Rock," Baldwin noted that Fey was this generation's Elaine May, the director, screenwriter and actress who famously partnered with Mike Nichols onstage.

"We have the greatest writers, but the show was created by one woman," Baldwin said backstage. "This was Tina's idea. This was Tina's thing. She is the head writer. She is there every day, even when she's not shooting as an actress. She goes back and forth between acting and writing. We're very, very lucky."

um i think the point of her saying she wants to stop playing palin was missed... she doesn't want to stop b/c she's humble, she doesn't want to have to play palin in the first place in the sense she doesn't want mccain to become elected.

Wanna know how convincing her portrayal of Palin was? My 62 year old co worker came into work the Monday after the Sat night skit and proclaimed to me " I don't like that commercial the Mccain campaign put out with Sarah and that woman that looked like Hillary. I thought it was wrong." Because she doesn't really watch a lot of television, I had to explain to her that it was just a news cap of the skit. This is not a stupid woman. Just an occasional viewer of TV. If Tina can be that convincing, I BEG her to continue. More lay people pay attention to comedic politics than any other venue. Let her be the conduit for Sarahs inadequateness. It can only add to the lack of exposure of Palin.

Finally, a major award in entertainment that isn't won by a busty blond bombshell but rather a smart and classy girl like Fey

Man, a little off the subject, but I was at Blockbusters and they were playing a promo for the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler movie "Straight to Video" I think it was called? Anyway, the title should have been instead of "Baby Mama"- (yeah, that was it) "Two Homley Girls Make a Movie". Sheez! Send this one to Bin Laden's boys and they will come out of the woods and surrender.

Tina is pretty impressive as Sarah, but if SNL really wants a spot-on impression of the candidates, they should start with bringing back Jon Lovitz as Tommy Flannigan (Fla-nay'-gun) to play John MdDain.

Did somebody twist Fey's arm to play S. Palin??

All she has to do is stop and quit imitating Palin's glasses and hairdo.

We shoud know who she is voting for.....She is one of the Hollywood group.....

1. You are in desperate need of a humor transplant.
2. Gov. Palin's stylist gave her glasses to match Tina Fey, not the other way around.
3. Sen. McCain has plenty of celebrities who are voting for him, Hollywood like any other group does not vote in a block.
4. You are in desperate need of a humor transplant.

oooh sorry.....did I step on your toe.....

Maybe Palin should have lasik surgery....and throw away the glasses.

I doubt if she cares so much about T. Fey that she wants to imitate her.

"3. Sen. McCain has plenty of celebrities who are voting for him"

Besides Dennis Hopper, Dennis Miller and Kelsey Grammar -

Name 3 more.

obviously the point went right over your head. Here it is in layman's terms. Tina Fey is implying that she wants Obama to win. Therefor she will not have to play Sara Palin anymore. Do you get it now? Also not all of Hollywood is rooting for Obama. Why is it that the republicans are ALWAYS in the "us and them" mentality?????? Unfortunately there are many narrow minded conservative/repubican celebrities.
also, i totally agree you are in desperate need of a sense of humor transplant.

Conservatives are born with a cob up their recticulum and it just grows larger as they get over. They can't help being crabby.

lollll..now that is the most subtle way I have seen somebody say "Vote Obama/Biden" by far...

Thank you for getting it. lol I was wondering why the author didn't catch that and recognize it for what it was.

PBS is doing a poll which asks if Palin is qualified to be VP. The right
wing has organized a yes campaign--and the 'yes' is at the moment winning.

Nah, she wants to stop playing Palin by Nov 4 and asked for help doing that. The only way that Sarah Palin will stop being someone she'd be asked to play would be if Obama wins the election. So help her! Help Tina Fey!!!

Ah Tina,
We love you. we could watch you do Sarah 4ever, but we understand.

I'm here to help Tina!! I want you to stop playing that lady too. A fellow Greek-American, very funny, an uncanny resemblance to an awful candidate and love of our country are a few things we have in common! http://ichkalliope.typepad.com

Anything excessive is annoying. Liberal bias is currently excessive in our culture and media. Thus... ANNOYING. I'm obviously not a democrat but I'm not a republican either. Celebrities already irritate me when they stop entertaining people to run their mouths. They have the right to speak but I'm getting fed up with what they choose to say. It's all the same babble. We get it.... hollywood loves obama and hates palin. I'm so sick of hearing about it. We don't need 4,000 spokespeople for it. None of them have anything different or insightful to say. I can't even watch shows like TDS and Colbert Report anymore. The original appeal of TDS was that they were mocking THE NEWS not engaging in a 24/7 bash fest. This is why anti-war movies don't make money. The average person doesn't want to bash everything. We just want entertainment. Creative entertainment is ideal.

Jacob:
It's comments like that that will lose this election. Even Tina Fey is tired of the attacks on her. Come on people! Frankly, it is this type of politics that sway the middle. And not towards your idiocracy
