UNITED NATIONS — Iran's president addressed the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday declaring that "the American empire" is nearing collapse and should end its military involvement in other countries.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said terrorism is spreading quickly in Afghanistan while "the occupiers" are still in Iraq nearly six years after Saddam Hussein was ousted from power in Iraq.

"American empire in the world is reaching the end of its road, and its next rulers must limit their interference to their own borders," Ahmadinejad said.

He accused the U.S. of starting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to win votes in elections and blamed a "few bullying powers" for trying to undermine Iran's nuclear program.

Ahmadinejad's hardline rhetoric came as no surprise and offered little in the way of compromise at the U.N., where he faces a new round of sanctions if no agreement is reached on limiting Iran's nuclear capabilities.

While he reiterated that the country's nuclear program is purely peaceful, the U.S. and others fear it is aimed at producing enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons.

Iran already is under three sets of sanctions by the U.N. Security Council for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment. Washington and its Western allies are pushing for quick passage of a fourth set of sanctions to underline the international community's resolve, but are likely to face opposition from Russia.

"A few bullying powers have sought to put hurdles in the way of the peaceful nuclear activities of the Iranian nation by exerting political and economic pressures against Iran," he said.

Ahmadinejad also lashed out at Israel on Tuesday, saying "the Zionist regime is on a definite slope to collapse, and there is no way for it to get out of the cesspool created by itself and its supporters."

The Iranian president is feared and reviled in Israel because of his repeated calls to wipe the Jewish state off the map, and his aggressive pursuit of nuclear technology has only fueled Israel's fears.

Ahmadinejad accused "a small but deceitful number of people called Zionists ... (of) dominating an important portion of the financial and monetary centers as well as the political decision-making centers of some European countries and the U.S."

Israeli President Shimon Peres reacted angrily to Ahjmadinejad's criticism. "It is again a repetition of the darkest accusations in the name of Hitler and almost anti-Semitism," Peres later told journalists.

In discussing the U.S. war in Iraq, Ahmadinejad said, "Millions have been killed or displaced, and the occupiers, without a sense of shame, are still seeking to solidify their position in the ... region and to dominate oil resources."

He suggested that the presence of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan has contributed to a sharp rise in terrorism and a huge increase in the production of narcotics.

He predicted that the alliance would not be successful.

"Throughout history every force that has entered Afghanistan has left in defeat," Ahmadinejad said.

His speech came just hours after President Bush made his eighth and final appearance before the U.N. General Assembly, urging the international community to stand firm against the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea.

"A few nations, regimes like Syria and Iran, continue to sponsor terror," Bush said. "Yet their numbers are growing fewer, and they're growing more isolated from the world. As the 21st century unfolds, some may be tempted to assume that the threat has receded. This would be comforting. It would be wrong."

At one point during Bush's 22-minute speech, Ahmadinejad turned to Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and gave a thumb's down.

As in past years, the United States only had a low-level note-taker present for the Iranian president's address, said Richard Grenell, spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. The U.S. and Iran do not have diplomatic relations.

During interviews ahead of his speech Tuesday, Ahmadinejad blamed U.S. military interventions around the world in part for the collapse of global financial markets.

"The U.S. government has made a series of mistakes in the past few decades," Ahmadinejad said an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "The imposition on the U.S. economy of the years of heavy military engagement and involvement around the world ... the war in Iraq, for example. These are heavy costs imposed on the U.S. economy.

"The world economy can no longer tolerate the budgetary deficit and the financial pressures occurring from markets here in the United States, and by the U.S. government," he added.

VIENNA, Austria - Iran is nearing the ability to arm a nuclear warhead even if it insists its atomic activities are peaceful, the European Union warned Wednesday. the EU also asserted that Iran appeared to have had a past nuclear arms program despite its denials., the IAEA's exhaustive and detailed" information, "leads one to think that the Iran has methodically pursued a program aimed at acquiring the nuclear bomb,"

Dennis Kucinich is Democrat. The current lipstick wearers representing BOTH parties are mealy mouthed corporate stooges in sync with American imperial policies. While there's nothing wrong with being an Empire, the people MUST be given an opportunity to have honest national debate on it. NEITHER of the candidates will give this to you.

We all know that this man is not stable, but he had a few good points and it should do the Americans some good to at least take into consideration what he has said. Bush has damaged foreign relations with enemies like Iran and friends like France. I can honestly tell you, that if McCain wins the Presidency and goes at this man with the same tactics Bush used, America is in danger. Ahmadinejad, I believe in his own way was right when he says that America is on the verge of collaspe. If McCain on Friday wants to prove to me that he is better to handle foreign policy, then he needs to show he can be diplomatic and that he is willing to listen to this crazy man even if he does not agree. Our lives, our childrens' lives and our image is on the line in this election. People stop thinking that old ideas and policies are going to work. This man is a prime example that we need new ideas for an ever changing world.

I agree with everything you said except the "We all know that this man is not stable" part . We KNOW nothing of the sort. We know he is a brilliant PhD scholar whose Father didn't provide him with a gilt edged existence to some prestigious American University. We know he has b@lls the size of baseball, to stand up to Bush and his evil empire and their bomb bomb Iran.

Ahmadinejad has aligned himself with Putin and Chavez two men who have also stood up to Bush. Ahmadinejad did not roll over and allow Bush free reign to wage unending wars and to invade/occupy his country, murder innocent Iranians on manufactured evidence and plunder their resources. Instead Ahmadinejad checkmated him every step of the way, which wasn't difficult since like the scarecrow Bush is still searching for his brains. Yet even with the little sliver of brain cells remaining, Bush knows we will all get more than a bloody nose if Iran is attacked.

Aaahhhh... and Ron Paul was the "kook". Little old guy that couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag, that talks in a squeak, with mild and meek mannerisms. Quite possibly the bravest statesman our country's produced in Decades. Dr. Paul and Dennis Kucinich want to do things that make sense. We can't have that. Too simple.
The simple fact is that Ron Paul garnered more support and donations during the primaries (up until he was just overwhelmed with being blackllisted) than ALL the candidates- red and blue from military personnel. What does that say to you? That our men/women in the Armed Forces are cowards? I don't think so. He did the worst thing you can do in politics- he told the truth. He explained that 9/11 was blowback. He said getting away from gold was foolish. He question the existence of the FED. And most importantly, he warned that Empire building would break us. I submit Rome and the British "Empires".

How sad this nation has become when a slimy, religious, ignorant tyrant with a taliban mentality can actually leverage genuine criticisms against our nation.

Yeah, I know a lot of the nationalistic / jingoistic parroting right-wingers on this forum want to associate Ahmadinejad's criticisms with the Daily Kos/etc... but, like Bin Laden, it turns out he's right about the faults that currently have helped bring this nation to the level of ruin it is now in.

I would simply ask these false american patriots, since here we have the opportunity to examine Ahmadinejad's words verbatim, which one of his critiques of our foreign policy is he 'lying' about?

Rather than simply dismiss the statement with Bush talking points and broad-stroke dismissal, I'd be interested in seeing an actual attempt to refute his criticisms.

*Keeping in mind that it's obvious that Ahmadinejad is himself a hypocrite, a religious zealot, a wanna-be tyrant, and a cartoon caricature. I guess with Bush as prez, it's safe to say "It takes one to know one".

I dream of the day when we can have a president that can look at these kind of folks, and with all confidence and conviction call him out for the piece of s#!+ Ahmadinejad is.

For now, we have to settle for a whiff of hope and watching the sunset of this horrible era through the walls of our glass house.

Ahmadinejad is here as a member of the United Nations and should be afforded the respect of a Head of State, just like the other umpteen UN members. He showed far more decorum in sitting through Bush's speech, and he didn't rant and rave like Chavez at the 'smell of sulfur. even though the whole world acknowledges that Shrub is the rear end of an ass and our foreign policy and our economy is in Hell's basket.

Israel can't survive without the US having stupidly pitched tent amongst some antsy Muslims. At the moment the US is too busy trying to tread water and avoid going down the gurgler despite the added weight of you hanging on to its coattail. If you lot keep on antagonizing Iran and Ahmadinejad, you are going to end up eating your tie like Saakashvilli as again the US will be unable assist you in your folly. The last I heard there were 10 Russian warships and some10,000 Syrians on your doorstep.Talk Peace!

Everyone has a right to speak, whether we approve of that person is a different matter. I listened
to what he had to say and he made a lot of sense regardless. I could not agree more with him.
How can we become perfect if we don't listen to criticism. We are in a sad state and it would
behoove us to hang our heads in shame for we voted for these crooked thieves and liars which
now hold out their hand to get bailed out, only to do it again and again.

Watch Fitna a controversial film made by A Dutch politician. What's controversial about it? It shows real footage of terrible acts without platitudes and excuses for it.

AhMyJihad is not scared?! It is EXACTLY becuase his master is scared that he's running around the world like a chicken with that bad hair piece.
Ayatollah sent him as a his pi$$ boy to stave off the American invasion they're so scared about. The Iranian army is feeling brave, the Georgian army just send them their surplus supplies of adult diaperz.

BTW, nobody is afraid of an American invasion anymore, anybody worth their salt can see we don't have enough spare resources to invade and occupy a football field.

What has America come to that we have to agree with a ROACH turdpile creep like Mahmoud I'mADinnerJacket?

Bush has set us back 20 yaers.. We will be picking Bananas for South Americans.. We are so dumb we can't even do tech jobs!!

Of course they will hate Obama, why elect a Harvard Law Professor? Maybe he might want to educate Americans and teach them how to take care of their bodies as to reduce health risks and give us healthcare.

Why elect the man that can do such progressive thing? Why not elect grandpa and his sidekick so they can stiffle our already dwindling rights. And let's not forget we will be thought about ABSTINENCE.. Who can argue with that..

Hi hotwire,
Praising Dear Leader is not for free people. The US populace is under surveillance and government-imposed debt. The US infrastructure is shaky, and health care is unavailable to many. The US children do not have a decent education, do not have regular doctor check-ups, and are not protected from a poison in the toys, air, water, and food. But the US’ CEOs are the best paid, and the Prez and VP are above the law.
Do you still want to praise the Dear Leader Bush?
