Today's Washington Post-ABC News poll has good news for Barack Obama, who now has a clear lead and an edge on economic issues:

Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll.

Just 9 percent of those surveyed rated the economy as good or excellent, the first time that number has been in single digits since the days just before the 1992 election. Just 14 percent said the country is heading in the right direction, equaling the record low on that question in polls dating back to 1973.

More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face. He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent. Two weeks ago, in the days immediately following the Republican National Convention, the race was essentially even, with McCain at 49 percent and Obama at 47 percent.

The poll also dampens concerns that Obama can't win over white women:

Two weeks ago, McCain held a substantial advantage among white voters, including newfound strength with white women. In the face of bad economic news, the two candidates now run about evenly among white women, and Obama has narrowed the overall gap among white voters to five percentage points.

No More Mister Nice Blog argues that "about evenly" understates Obama's gains with the group:

In fact, that understates the turnaround. If you check the PDF of the poll results, you see that McCain had a 16-point lead among white women in mid-June, just after Hillary Clinton ended her campaign; Obama is now up by 2.

John McCain's campaign is aggressively spinning the poll, TPM reports:

The McCain camp rolled out their top pollster Bill McInturff, who argued on a conference call with reporters moments ago that the poll is an outlier whose results are skewed by lopsided party identification numbers, which showed the Democrats with a 16-point advantage over the GOP after leaners were pushed.

"It's appropriate to say politely that this one poll is an unusual outlier that does not represent where this campaign is or where it's heading as we go into the first presidential debate," McInturfff said.

But can someone please, please explain to me why Obama is not leading by 20 points? I know polls are generally BS, and I know there are tons of missing cell phone and newly registered citizens who are not showing up in these, but still, it's quite frustrating. Although the website www.fivethirtyeight.com is encouraging, I still just can't get over the fact that the numbers are this close. And this is before closet racists say when asked that they'll vote for Obama to not look racist but then can't pull the lever. It's just a bit frustrating.

Thirty out of fifty states are Red & they'll usually voted for the Repo man no matter what.

On the other hand, there is usually quite a bit of revulsion after 8 years of one party
mucking up the presidency, so the other party gets a chance. USUALLY.

We will just have to see. With Obama surging & McCain wobbling, this can still turn out ok.

queen,

Its simple. Clinton only got elected the first time because Perot was in the race. Clinton only got elected the second time because they put up Dole. Half the voters went for Bush in 2000 even though it was obvious what a train wreck he would be. Half the voters went for Bush AGAIN in 2004 even though they had personally seen the train wreck. My experience with Republicans is, until it is happening to them, it isn't happening (for example, Palin's newfound interest in disabilities). Until this country drops to its knees under the misrule of Republicans, all you're going to see is 50%.

Perot was only in the race because lots of Reagan-loving Repos did
not care for Bush 41. Dole was only in the race because the Repos
had to run *somebody* against Clinton. Bush 43 won (in part) because
voters were 'tired' of Clinton, and Obama *should* win because they're
'tired' of Bush 43.

.... the country has 'already' "dropped to its knees" (bail-out etc.)
------ as for the 83% ; we will 'stay' on the 'wrong track' unless McCain is defeated. The Bush/Cheney machine , with all their strategically placed henchmen (throughout government) , will keep their patronized positions and the "raping" of America will continue.

McCain's response to the financial market crisis has been feeble; I'm not impressed with Obama's response either, but the pressure isn't on him with this issue. The poll on America's direction does and doesn't surprise me. I'm not surprised a majority of Americans think we're on the wrong track; there's nothing going on in the White House or Congress to make them think otherwise. The number is higher than I would have thought, however. If these numbers are accurate, a "throw the bums out" attitude could be building, but given the traditional success of incumbents, such a ground swell is not something I'd want to wager on. I am a little surprised, however, that such disapproval isn't translating into more support for Obama. This presidential race should be a slam-dunk for Obama, but it still remains close. As one who intends to vote Republican, perhaps I'm being overly optimistic, yet I have always been girding myself for disappointment on Election night. The Palin bump has run its course for the moment, and the fiancial crisis is center stage, but we're still almost 6 weeks out, and a lot can happen in that time. I do believe that if polls are only favoring Obama by 3-5% going into Election day, he will lose, due to the Bradley effect. A gain of 6 Senate seats seems quite reasonable for the Democrats, with smaller House gains. It's one of the more interesting elections in my life (I'm 62).

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but I'm not gonna get too excited about Obama's lead just yet. There's still plenty of time for the momentum to start swinging the other way. We'll see how the debates go. If Obama can at least hold his own, I'll feel better about his chances. If McCain is a better debater and comes out on top, I'll be scared.

McCian a better debater? He wants to cancel the debates because he is too chicken to stand up to Obama.

What I find interesting is not the poll numbers, but McCain's reaction to the poll. What further proof do we need that McCain thinks like Bush? "Deny and discredit science if it doesn't match my beliefs and goals."

The only economy that the Republicans' systematic deregulation of our financial markets has helped is the Swiss economy.

This poll means 17% of americans are clinically brain dead! If you think this country is on THE RIGHT TRACK then you need professional mental health treatment.

Even George Bush thinks those people need help!

The only thing that trickles down from such policies is contributions to GOP election campaigns.

GOP supporters will tell you that if you take away these tax breaks the economy will collapse as jobs are lost. The fact the economy has collapsed DESPITE the tax breaks just proves they were wrong. Wake up people.
