Biden Rips McCain On Zapatero Gaffe In Barnburning Speech

Joseph Biden, in a barnburner speech Wednesday morning, attacked John McCain on all aspects of foreign policy -- including the Republican's unwillingness to commit to a meeting with the prime minister of Spain.

"Last week, John McCain said he would not meet with the leader of Spain. Now folks, he would not meet with the leader of a NATO ally. A NATO ally who has Spanish forces in Afghanistan, who has forces fighting side by side with the U.S." said Biden. "Ladies and gentlemen, what kind of judgment is that? What kind of bluster is that? Ladies and gentleman, John McCain's notion about how to deal with our allies as well as adversaries is something I just don't understand. How in God's name will we deal with Russia, without a united NATO. Ladies and gentleman, John McCain has gotten it wrong on so many fundamental issues."

Biden was responding to an interview, last week, in which McCain seemed confused as to who exactly was the prime minister of Spain. Asked four times by a Spanish radio station whether he would meet with Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, McCain simply said he would not welcome those willing to do harm to America. A day after the infamous interview, the Senator's foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann insisted that McCain meant what he said: he would not commit to sitting down with the Spanish leader.

On Wednesday, Biden belittled McCain for this as well as other "misguided" foreign policy positions. On Iran, the Delaware Democrat noted that "five former secretaries of state, including Henry Kissinger and Colin Powell," believe direct talks with country are in our interest. "John McCain" who opposes such dialogue, Biden added, "is the one who doesn't get it. So much for judgment."

On Iraq, Biden noted that now even the Bush administration and prime minister Nouri al-Malaki acknowledge -- to differing degrees -- the importance of having a time frame for troop withdrawal. "Only John McCain says no," he added. "John McCain is the only odd man out with Barack's plan."

And on Afghanistan, Biden ripped his Republican opponent for continually underestimating the significance of that country in the broader war on terror.

"In the run up to the war in Iraq, while Barack and I were saying this is going to be a disaster if we did not do things fundamentally different than what we were doing, John insisted, like Dick Cheney, that we would be greeted as liberators," said the Democratic vice presidential nominee, "that we didn't need a lot of troops... that victory was imminent. Then, he said he wasn't worried about Afghanistan... that we would 'muddle through' ... and then he declared Afghanistan to be 'a remarkable success.'"

The speech, delivered in Cincinnati, Ohio, had multiple crescendos, with Biden shifting between touting Obama's judgment and ridiculing McCain's. While much of the language had been used before on the stump, Biden's attacks were sharper in tone and more up-to-date than they have been in the past.

Since it comes amidst a week of terrible news on the economic front, it remains to be seen how this address will resonate. But keep in mind, on Friday, McCain and Obama will debate issues of foreign policy. And Biden's main goal, it seemed, was to set the stage for voters to feel comfortable with Obama leading the nation in the international arena.

"Ladies and gentleman," he concluded, "Barack Obama is ready to be Commander in Chief of the United States of America."

Biden has earned the right to have the gaffes. I love the media putting him and the princess on the same level. She has not and will never accomplish anything worthwhile for people and that is why she is unqualified to be vice president.

Maybe Obama can debate Biden on Friday in Mississippi?

Awesome speech for all Americans to have listened to. Way to go, Joe. By the way, I am curious as to the timing of this speech. It seems to me that it was just hours later that McCain postponed his foreign policy debate for this Friday. Any comments?

Yes, McCain went back to his JOB and is working to resolve a financial crisis that Obama has described as "the most serious economic problem facing this country since the great depression".

Obama showed up in Washington today, raised his hand and voted "present".

After that, Obama went back to an empty debating hall in Mississippi and listened to chirping crickets.

I can't fathom how Americans could possibly elect a man to run our country who would say such a thing about a meeting with a NATO ally. Just incredibly frightening. I'm so afraid of the possibility of Mccain being elected it feels as if HE is the terrorist.

brute --

So, lemme get this straight . . . you think McChicken's confusing world leaders -- and possibly going to war on false assumptions -- is not as serious as Biden mistakenly asking a disabled person to do something they can't do????!!!!

Okaaaaaayyyyyyy, I think we can all see what your character flaws are.

I don't know what you do for a living, but I hope it doesn't involve personal assessment skills, b/c your's suck!

i like biden, despite all of his gaffes, because he isn't lying. the man simply gets mixed up... you can't compare him saying "FDR and TV in 1929" to McCain "i will not welcome those willing to do harm to America".

joe biden was trying to make a point and he got some historical facts wrong, but McCain is saying he's not willing to meet with zapatero. it's "forgot some history" to "willing to put in jeopardy foreign affairs"... in my opinion, joe biden isn't that bad.

I had a feeling he was confusing Zapatero with Zapata. Then McCain goes and says his favorite movie is "Viva Zapata." Coincidence? I think not!

Imagine McCain as POTUS. He would embarrass us daily like he has embarrassed America daily with his campaign. It would be funny if it wasn't a presidential job he's applying for.

Campaigning in Virginia coal country, Joe Biden actually described himself as "a coal miner" from the Northeastern Pennsylvania anthracite region.

"I hope you won"t hold it against me, but I am a hard-coal miner, anthracite coal, Scranton, Pa.," Biden said. "It"s nice to be back in coal country. ¦ It"s a different accent [in Southwest Virginia] ¦ but it"s the same deal.

The mines closed when Joe Biden and I were kids. Biden obviously was never a coal miner.
Joe Biden moved from Scranton to the Delaware suburbs at the age of ten. Biden campaigns on his purported coal mining, Roman Catholic roots, but his politics have always been upper middle class suburban liberal.

According to Vice Plagiarist Biden"s own autobiography, his father was to the manor born. Biden"s grandfather was an executive with the American Oil Co., and his father had all the advantages in life. "My dad," Biden writes in "Promises to Keep," "grew up well polished by gentlemanly pursuits. He would ride to the hounds, drive fast, fly airplanes. He knew good clothes, fine horses, the newest dance steps."

For anyone still out there who doesn't believe the MSM is in the tank for Obama we have proof:

"When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened.' "

Of course there was no TV and Hoover was the president.

Also:

Biden has said it was the "patriotic" duty of wealthy Americans to pay higher taxes, urged a wheelchair-bound man to "stand up" at a Democrat rally, and suggested Hillary Clinton "might have been a better pick than me" as Obama's running mate.

Now a simple thought experiment: What if Sarah Palin had said any of these things? Every reporter and pundit would be howling that she was fully unqualified, lightweight ditz. Uncle Joe gets cotton mittens.

Now THIS is a debate that's over, Al.

Biden: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Clinton: [whispering] Germans?

Obama: Forget it, he's rolling.

McCain, Obama, Biden, and anyone else who is front of the public will occasionally misspeak. It is not a character flaw, just part of the job. As far as suggesting someone else might have been a better pick, that sounds to me like humility. I can not imagine Palin suggesting there would have been better picks than herself. Actually, I can barely imagine her speaking at all since she has been kenneled like a pit bull since the "Bush Doctrine" interview.

BTW why is it that most people assume "higher" means unfair? Isn't it conceivable that wealthy Americans are paying unfairly low taxes or conversely most American's are paying unfairly high taxes compared to wealthy Americans.

Was Biden the most qualified person the Democrats could have chosen for VP?

Really? No one more qualified?

McCain's request today to postpone the debates is another effort at distraction. It's the same principle as 3 card monte. Distraction so that the face card, distraction so that the ball under the cup is lost in the shuffle. Joe Biden's speach today put McCain on notice, and I think that he's not prepared to engage Obama without coming across as out of touch and Bush III.
