I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Debate

Barack Obama rejected the proposal -- put forward by John McCain today -- that the two presidential candidates leave the campaign trail, delay Friday's debate, and return to Washington to work on a bailout package for the economy,

"Presidents are going to have to deal with more than one thing at a time," he said, "it is not necessary for us to think we can do only one thing and suspend everything else."

Expressing concern about infusing "Capitol Hill with presidential politics," Obama said it was his desire to see the debate go forward.

"With respect to the debates it is my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in roughly 40 days will be responsible for this mess," he said. "I think it is going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once. I don't see why we can't be constructive in helping with this problem."

Obama, who would not commit to taking advertisements off the air as McCain's campaign has, delivered his remarks hours after McCain announced the suspension of his campaign. The Arizona Republican insisted that it was time for the two candidates to return to work to help push forward a bi-partisan bailout package to deal with the financial crisis.

Earlier in the afternoon, Democrats in Congress were already calling out McCain for engaging in what was described, at various times, as a "Hail Mary pass" and a "deeply cynical" ploy.

"The debate should take place as scheduled," Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an interview with NPR to be broadcast this afternoon. "We have to be able to do a couple of things at once. That's what leadership requires."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a statement that McCain's move would actually impair negotiations over the bailout by introducing politics into the equation.

"I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama's suggestion," said Reid. "But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation's economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op."

Later, Reid personally delivered his statement to McCain over the phone after the Arizona Republican called the Majority Leader. "Sorry, John, I already issued this statement," Reid told McCain, a Democratic staffer told the Huffington Post.

The staffer added, "John McCain's done enough damage to our economy in Washington. He should stay on the campaign trail."

Sherrod Brown, meanwhile, called McCain's move "a bit of a gimmick," noting that the Arizona Republican had "never weighed in on these economic issues in the past," and asking, rhetorically, why a presidential candidate couldn't multi-task.

"This country is faced with enough crises, both foreign and domestic that they should be able to continue with this debate," Brown told MSNBC.

Appearing at the same time on Fox News, Sen. Joseph Lieberman was sticking to the McCain campaign line - which seems to be that it is one's patriotic duty to stop the campaign and work on the economy.

"A debate on foreign policy Friday night is important but not as important as saving American from an economic crisis," he declared. "I would say it is more important of John McCain and Barack Obama to be here in Washington as part of a solution to this economic crisis."

Democratic aides on Capitol Hill were incensed with McCain's move. One, whose boss works on the Senate Banking Committee, described the move as "cynical politics" at its worst. Another, however, lamented the fact that McCain could very well claim the ethical high-ground. "In general," said an aide. "I'd say we should have thought of it, but we did, then McCain [screwed] us."

Whether the move was a political ploy on the part of the Republican candidate, Obama wouldn't say. He did, however, note that he was the one who first broached McCain with the idea of releasing a joint statement on the crisis. That came in the form of an 8:30 a.m phone call this morning which McCain never answered. According to Obama, the two campaigns spoke six hours later, where it was suggested that in addition to the joint statement the candidates would meet in Washington D.C. with congressional leaders. Shortly thereafter, however, McCain had announced in front of television cameras that he was putting a temporary stop to the campaign functions.

"My assumption was that the joint statement would go out initially," said Obama.

Good for Obama. By not falling for McCain's bogus stunt he shows that he is the more Presidential. A crisis is no time for running around half-cocked the way McCain has been doing for the past two weeks.

As I said in the other thread, Obama should start each speech on the road with:

"I want to assure you that I am in close contact with the Senate leadership on the financial assistance debate in the Senate. I have spent a lot of time on the phone and sent quite a few e-mails (pause for laughter) and if my presence is needed to assure passage on a final vote the campaign plane is fueled up and ready to go. Since I am certain that you are curious let me fill you in on how I see the situation right now..."

That will blunt any criticism from McCain about Obama not taking the situation seriously.

If the Republicans steal this election again, I will in turn maxx out my credit cards and then refuse to make a single payment on them .Who will care at that point what their credit rating is? No, I think every Democrat, every intelligent person out there should do the same. If we bail out these a-holes, we willget NOTHING in return. I'm taking mine NOW.

John McBush knows nothing about economics, according to his own words. But now he's eager to disrupt the good work being done on the Hill to solve our economic crisis by pouring his "economic wisdom" into the pot at the last minute.

AND he tries to snooker Obama into dropping HIS campaign and his campaign ads -- right after McCain airs a lying racist ad against Obama. What a coward..

His poll numbers go down and he runs like a chicken from the first real debate. . the one Americans need most . . . one that should be about economics.

To quote my favorite John Cusack movie, (McCain) "would sell us all to China for medical experiments" (to win this election.)

A military vet for the sane, cool, unflappable, "wise beyond his years" Obama

If McCain becomes president, soon or later, there would be some crisis not unlike the one between Russia and Georgia, McCain would have an idea pop into his head: "hey I am a freakin' maverick. I gotta do something about this which would have a whole bunch of razzel dazzel."

I do not think, he can be trusted to make rational decisions.

If McChicken was to pull out of the race what would happen? Could they put someone else in his place even though the election is only 40 days away?

Wow! A lot of anger on this board against McCain for suggesting that they delay the debates to take care of the country?

First thing first:
To the people here who have suggested that this is part of a strategy on McCain's part... remember what Obama said, and what the timeline is:
* Obama (at the suggestion of a Republican) called McCain
* McCain agrees to Obama's suggestion of a joint statement
* McCain THEN suggests that they BOTH delay the debates, suspend the campaign, and go to Washington and address the problem.

If this is part of a strategy by McCain, its the quickest political strategy ever devised. If we're to believe the McCain critics, he literally thought it up while on the phone with Obama.

OR we can believe the more logical conclusion; that when Obama suggested consensus on a crisis, McCain agreed and suggested further consensus.
At which time Obama balked.

The priorities here are pretty clear.
McCain's priority was to address the crisis, and do it in a bi-partisan way.
Obama's priority was to be seen as doing the right thing, while really just wanting more face time on TV during the debates.

The sad part is that the vast majority of the people on this board will never understand that.

-John

No one is going to read all this blibber blabber, John. Wordy and tedious. McCain is chickening out because the stress of the campaign is making him older and ricketier than he alreay is. He doesn't want America to know what a rusty old bucket he is.

You obviously have not read one FACT that has been reported.

*There has not been ONE REPORT of a Republican suggesting to Obama that he call McCain.
*McCain agrees to a joint statement then ignores Obam for SIX HOURS (Plenty of time for his "advisers" to be constructing their little web (of spin and deceit) to turn this blubbering dunce into our economic savior.
*McCain all of a sudden has this "breaking news" that he's suspending his campaign and heading to Washington to be Mr.Patriot and give all his energy to a crisis that has already been being handled in a bi-partisan manner by Congress.

The rest of what you state? I've seen 8 year olds come up with better lies and twists. Please stop reading what has been released straight off the Republican Party tpm today. The old "swamp land in FL" would be a stellar buy in a heartbeat than any of the drivel you spew here.

Obama is not foolish enough to follow the lead of this unstable, impractical, and untrustworthy man.Why would Obama, who graduated first in his law school class at Harvard, deffer and acquiesce to the bad judgment and flawed logic of a duplicitous scalawag, as this man has proven himself to be.

Aren't you glad, then, that John McCain is putting his heart and soul, and every moment awake in solving the economic crisis by speaking with Katie Couric?

From the sounds of all other accounts I've heard, it seems like McCain went ahead with his ploy before the two candidates sat down to make a bipartisan statement. He knew if he jumped the gun it would put Obama on the defensive, and if you watched Obama's press conference yesterday evening, his plan failed miserably. Obama seemed to almost snicker at how ridiculous McCain's strategy was.

Not to mention the primary point to be made...the people responsible for trying to tie this mess together have stated that THEY DON'T NEED MCCAIN TO BE THERE. Why is it that now, all of a sudden, he cares? Why is it that McCain can't trust his closest surrogates to stand in for him for a few hours while he debates and addresses the nation. McCain was hiding all week before this fiasco, but now he has a "legitimate" excuse. This nonsense is starting to make me sick.

Well stated my friend!
But have you noticed that McCain''s strategist seem to be using the worst of Hillery's strategist old worn out and ineffective tricks and we see how that worked out.
These people just refuse to admit to themselves, that Obama is exponentially smarter than they are.

Just like McCain, few if any of his guys graduated first in their class at Harvard or was the editor of their college law school review, or taught constitutional law for 11 or 12 years at one of the top law schools in the country. THOUGH THEY WOULD NEVER ADMIT IT, 99% OR NONE of these guys can' hold a candle to Obama's academic or political qualifications

And the reason this is the case, Obama's mother and grand parents new that he would have to learn to work, and study , twice as hard to become twice as smart, to be on a level playing field with his white counterparts. And now these miscreants are having to deal with the results of this reality. But these folks have a tendency to underestimate and disrespect all great men who are not one of their cronies and that is their fatal flaw.

This crisis shows how each of the candidates behaves when faced with a crisis.

Obama has remained calm, rational, and collected.

McCain is running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

We dare not trust such an erratic person with his finger on the button.

ON MCCAIN’S IRRATIC BEHAVIOR—CANCELLING DEBATE
McCain's irratic behavior brings into question again his temperament and age. This man is unstable and unpredictable. Does anyone doubt that such character flaws can ever be fixed, even in high office. We are all in danger. Forbid it that such a man would ever have his hand on the nuclear botton--he would act without thinking through the consequences of his action. And McCain has never been a serious thinker or a smart student. He is also a lier. He cancelled his appearance on David Letterman's show supposedly because he was flying immediately to Washington to deal with the economic crisis( NOTE: He lst showed up in the Senate in March). Then he proceeded to have an interview with CBS anchor Katie Curic. Is that the kind of leader America wants? Oh, no!

Well if the republic is truly in peril would it not make sense to the experienced senator to want to get back to work to try to craft the delicate bi-partisan bill that can be passed in time save the ship of state?

Or you could follow the lead of the inexperienced senator and bray that "the show" must go on. If the financial markets do melt down, are the people going to be comforted by the warmth of the debate?

Or maybe really pissed off that while the time to fix things was available some politicos chose to prance and posture till it all came crashing down. If we go into a deep prolonged recession, we the people might want to hold our Senators & Congress people leaders accountable. Because it is their JOB to exercise regulatory oversight of the Treasury, SEC, FreddieMac, FannieMay, etc.

What has the Dem. controlled Senate/Congress been doing the past two years? Nothing?

Which party do the rimlickers that have been placed in charge of all of these regulatory agencies belong to? The Republicans of course.
Which party believes in trickle down economics, and tax breaks for wealthy people and corporations that outsource our jobs? The Republicans of course.
Who fought for deregulation of the SandL's which failed and left the taxpayers to bail them out? The Republicans of course, John McSame in particular.
Who pushed through legislation to repeal the Glass-Stegall act which deregulated the banks and insurance companies? Phil Gramm of course.
Who has Phil Gramm as his economic advisor, and will not rule out putting him in charge ot the Treasury in his administration? John McSame of course.

Like I said Whatta Maroon.

The only candidate in the gang of four that will have any impact on the decision process for the bailout is Sen. Biden he is the Chairman of the Banking Committee.Everyone else is window dressing,Do you really think McCain will fix what he doesn't understand?

Leave it to Joe Lieberman to come up with a sleazy plan under the guise of patriotism. That card has been played ad nauseum by the McCain campaign based on one unlucky incident. He was a POW. It is time to move on like so many others who were imprisoned. What has McCain done lately that qualifies him for hero status?

One does not "broach" a person. One broaches a subject, as in "he broached the subject of releasing a joint statement on the crisis."

David Letterman had it right: If the Candidate has to leave the Campaign Trail for a day or two, why not put the VP pick in charge?

If your VP is ready to lead the nation, couldn't s/he front a Campaign for a day or two??
