Barney Frank: GOP Colleagues Winced At 'Mighty Mouse' McCain

One would think that some of John McCain's Republican colleagues might actually want to help him become president of these United States, but no: given the opportunity to ensure that the presidential candidate might be able to make a substantive contribution to bailout measure negotiations, McCain's friends in the Republican Party put their noses to the grindstone and worked out a deal without any Maverick input. Clearly Republican leaders are totally in the tank for Obama.

How painful was the thought of working alongside McCain? Over at Politico, they report that Barney Frank minced few words, saying: "Nobody mentioned him. The man's irrelevant to the whole process. No Republican mentioned his name. I'm the only one who raised his name. They winced when I did." Frank also compared McCain to a cartoon superhero:

"He's been irrelevant to the process. He remains to be," said Frank. "I was afraid that his dropping in here, like Andy Kaufman's Mighty Mouse -- 'here I am to save the day' -- I thought that would slow things down. I didn't see any sign of our Republican colleagues paying any attention to him whatsoever."

Having worked in the board rooms, getting my throat cut for mentioning risk of Bear, Lehman and others this whole subject has me outraged, particularly watching Barney Frank on Tuesday night"s Charlie Rose show. Outraged that this citizen sponsored bailout hinged on President Bush"s insistence that we continue to allow what has lead to the near downfall of the United States of America. Blood money to corporate America.

If FOX ""NEWS"", Talk radio, and Rove/Bush/McCain weren't around, this country might have a chance. A chance to change the discourse in America. To bring America back from being the "B" of Communist China. Back from ironically being led down the road to perdition by the religious right. A chance to stop the Lobby Blood Money to Healthcare Corporate Welfare- 2 Trillion a year, 15% of our GDP, the Lobby Blood Money to the Corporate Welfare of KBR, Blackwater, and Halliburton/Cheney , and the Lobby Blood Money to Golden Parachutes Corporate Welfare.

Communism = Privatization Capitalism : http://kittendiatribes.wordpress. We have a choice, to be owned by communist China and other foreigners, or stop demonizing government and take care of Americans BEFORE giving huge $$$ to corporations.

This comedy routine, inexplicably hilarious, has finally found it's proper context.

Two points:

1) It's starting to look like McCain would gladly scuttle the economy in order to win an election.

2) I think the bipartisan bill is likely the only game in town. Although we don't yet know the details of the alternative Republican bill, I think there is a good chance that Democrats will find it objectionable.

As usual, McCain is all talk and full of hot air. There was a time when I thought McCain would be reasonable, but lately it seems like he is completely off his rocker and just not to be trusted. Comments welcome: http://whenelephantsfly.blogspot.com

Perhaps someone should remind Barney who the leader of the Republican party is now. Hint: It ain't Bush.

There will be no plan unless McCain signs off on it. Face facts, Obama supporters, your guy just lost the election. Democrats can't pass a bill without the Republicans, and only McCain can deliver them. Game over. Checkmate.

Except that back here in realityland, McCain gets one vote, just like Obama and the rest of the Senate. He's not on the Banking Committee, he had no part in drafting the deal, and he's about a million miles away from having the enthusiastic support of his party. Certainly if he were "the leader of the Republican party", he'd be able to stop the Republican infighting that has caused a stalemate in the biggest financial crisis in a generation. Instead, as soon as he arrived all the progress they'd made fell apart.

It's amazing that in the face of a widening gap in every poll, a VP candidate hiding from the press, and McCain himself trying to get out of the debate, for crap's sake, you've found a way to believe that things are looking up for your guy. It's impressive.

What's impressive to me is your total complete lack of understanding as to what's really going on. I guess you just weren't paying attention today. See if this helps. Some, some republicans were working with democrats, until McCain showed up. McCain put a stop to that. He realizes the Democrats can't and won't sign off on any deal by themselves. I saw that on Pelosi's and Reid's faces in that photo-op at the White House. They know they're screwed.

McCain told the Senate and House minority leaders not to work with democrats, because he knows how the financial markets got into this mess, and whose fault it really is. There will be no deal until the democrats are exposed as the culprits of this fiasco. They used the world's best free market capitalist system for social engineering, and it has nearly collapsed our economy.

That's why, in less than five days, the democrats have gone from the talking point, "We had nothing to do with this", to "There's more than enough blame to go around."

The trolls are making some really good points today. I was hoping McCAin would have picked Santa CLaus as his running mate, but SP was a really solid GOPish choice as well. We all know that the GOP has never been an advocate of financial de-regulation, and we are all familiar with McCains sphisticated grasp of the fundamentals of the economy. As McCain himself said:

My friend, my friend, please stop it with the hate...the fundamentals of our economy are strong; the fundamental American workers are strong, we are fundamentally, fundamental in our funds and our fundamental funds are strong; the American workers are having fun with our fundamentals and I fundamentally support the American workers to have fun while their funds are fundamentally depleting. What's so fundamentally wrong with that you fundamental idiots. My friends, let's be fundamentally patient as our funds fundamentally disappear from our fundamentally strong financial institutions. Are we having fun yet, fundamentalists?

Brilliant! So McCain can take credit for extending the current crisis. Other Wall Street firms to cry "Uncle" (Sam), unemployment to spike, stock prices to plummet. McCain really has outsmarted the smart. Go, Mac, go!

McCain is crashing and burning. People we need to start paying attention to more overseas news media and stop following our news media for every crumb of information. We are being shafted by a mile. Check out this article:

As usual Barney Frank has got it wrong. McCain has a win/ win/ win. eventually some large transfer to Wall St. will go through... Win 1. Although Bush begged for it, the Dems will be blamed... Win 2. John McCain will be on record against it... Win 3.

Harry Reid. do the honorable thing, grab your sword........

That's pretty funny. Barney Frank is right -- as usual.

Really it's lose/lose/lose

Lose 1: McCain is obviously trying to sabotage the whole thing. He will get blamed if it DOESN"T go through.

Lose 2: His cowardly stunt to weasel out of the debates is already beginning to backfire.

Lose 3: Regardless of what happens, the GOP will get the blame for the economy tanking because, unlike you, most people are smart enough to remember who has been in charge the last eight years.

Living with John McCain is like living with a drunk. He is unpredictable, irrational, and does things on a whim. John has no plan. It is embarrassing. I feel sorry for the guy. Oh, well. Life goes on.

McCain is irrelevant not only to the bailout discussion but to the country as a whole.

What I don't understand is...why is there even one person left who truly thinks McCain is a good choice for president? Why don't the polls show McCain in the dumpster?

i think a lot of polls are taken over the weekend. it will be interesting to see if he tanks in those polls. i think a lot of undecideds are finally going to see what a disaster this is. i think BO should be very cautious about overly injecting himself into the nitty gritty negotiations. he should reserve his comments for the appropriate time during the debate. mccooter does not look very presidential this week does he. what a joke he is.

As bad as you think McCain is, apparentyly many more people don't trust Obama..even after all this time..wonder why?

It's quite simple. There is a lot of bigotry in this country. If you don't think there is, perhaps you'd be better with Sarah Palin as your president.

:o)

Look at the polls, most people trust Obama enough to vote him President: http://www.pollster.com/. So apparently, conservative republicans like "enufsaid" distort the truth when it hits their brain. It must be a dysfunctional brain as the numbers don't lie. People do (or perhaps the are in constant ideological denial)

McCain is trying to use the bailout to outflank Obama and become some sort of economic maverick that will swoop in and fix things. Obama and the campaign need to turn things around and wrap this bailout mess around McCain's neck. Obama needs to take McCain's strength and turn it into a weakness. They need to start referring to these Richy Rich Wall Street tycoons that got us into this mess as what they are: FINANCIAL MAVERICKS. "Mavericks" that broke all the rules and walked to the beat of their own drum, flouted the regulations, and bankrupted this nation. If these rich fat cats weren't such "mavericks" and played by the rules the world would be a better place.

This must've been published before the Democratics pivoted and are now trying to blame McCain.

It would be easier for you hacks to play along if your mind-masters weren't flopping around like fish out of water.

what the bleep did you just read. his own people are saying he is useless and unwanted. democrats are just stating the obvious that injecting presidential politics into this will only ad to flimsy framing of the bill.
