GOP House Leader Says McCain "Got The Discussion Going In The Direction That We Wanted"

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Just before 2PM, House Republican Whip Roy Blunt told CNN's Jessica Yellin that John McCain's so-called 'rescue mission' on the financial crisis deal negotiations "got the discussion going in the direction that we wanted to see it go all week."

Blunt added that "John McCain came back and said 'Wait a minute, I think the House Republicans have the taxpayers in mind here and I'm with them.'"

Here's video:

As a reminder, just as John McCain arrived in Washington, DC, GOP Rep. Spencer Bachus appeared at a joint news conference with House and Senate leaders of both parties to announce that a deal framework had been reached. Here's video:

Although Bachus was the least enthusiastic of those at the press conference, he clearly stated that (a) he was pleased the the bailout deal would protect taxpayers and that (b) House Republicans were committed to a successful negotiation.

As Bachus made his remarks, John McCain was meeting with John Boehner. Within an hour of that meeting ending, Boehner issued a statement saying House Republicans opposed the deal, repudiating the comments by Bachus.

I hope the Obama camp includes it in some advertisements to show the mess McCain helped to create.

Biden explained his position. After shouting "Bomb Bomb Bomb" Iran and picking a brash aggressive running mate, I think his reputation as a warmonger are sealed for all time.

Republicans are playing political theatre to blame their FAILURES on the Democrats.

In addition to the shared urgency of purpose in electing Barack Obama as President we must elect a 60-40 Democratic Senate majority.

As our financial institutions crumble around us, Republicans have rallied around a cry for blame on the Democratic Congressional majority. The irony is that over the last 2 Senate sessions the minority Republicans have set records in the number of partisan filibusters blocking much needed legislation...including financial regulation which may have mitigated our current economic crisis. Over 130 filibusters in 2 years!

A 60-40 majority in the Senate allows the Democrats to legally quash obstructionist filibusters and get our representatives back to work solving the extremely serious problems currently facing our nation.

I urge you to add your voice and your financial contributions to the following Senate campaigns where strong Democrats are facing vulnerable Republicans:
- Alaska: Mark Begich (http://www.begich.com)
- Colorado: Mark Udall (http://www.markudall.com)
- Idaho: Larry LaRocco (http://www.laroccoforsenate.com)
- Louisiana: Mary Landrieu (http://www.marylandrieu.com)
- Minnesota: Al Franken (http://www.alfranken.com)
- Mississippi: Ronnie Musgrove (http://musgroveforsenate.net)
- Nebraska: Scott Kleeb (http://www.scottkleeb.com)
- New Hampshire: Jeanne Shaheen (http://www.jeanneshaheen.org)
- New Mexico: Tom Udall (http://www.tomudall.com)
- North Carolina: Kay Hagan (http://www.kayhagan.com)
- Oregon: Jeff Merkley (http://www.jeffmerkley.com)

There is nothing good to say about J. Boehner of OHIO either. That man will squash or say anything to get in the limelight. That he goes on and on about protecting "the taxpayer" ad nauseum ..he is as phoney as a 7 dollar bill...He votes with Bush and bush's policies/philsophies 100% of the time. Ohio must be proud..he represents a state of non personal growth. I would be ashamed. Boehner is a rat's patooty. The fact that HE and Mccain got together and through a wrench into this whole thing shows what ambitions he might have. Lordy lordy...come on Ohio ..try coming to the table...try coming to the latter part of the 20th century..then work on this one.

No matter what is said on what he did this week the general consensus is that McCain was a bumbling idiot up to the debate. People are moving away from him. Can't wait to see if they try and cancel the Veep debate now that Palin looked like a fool talking to Katie Couric.

Always remember that when any political figure says he is doing something for the good of the country (like suspending a campaign) or they are putting politics aside in a time of crisis; they are doing something that is OVERTLY POLITICAL ... The sad thing is most people (including some in the media) are not smart enough to get that ...

The McSAME / P'h'ALIN machine makes me sick !!!

McCain is trying to make political hay and nothing else. He has pretty well proven that he knows nothing about the economy and does not care about the average American. In fact, he does not know what the average American is up against. If the bailout deal does not get down on terms essentially laid out by Obama, then McCain is to blame. In that case, he will inherit not a whirlwind, but a tsunami. McCain is irresponsible.

this is a major win for McCain. He can claim now that he was not about to let a Democratic Congress waste $700 Billion on Welfare For Wall Street, and Joe Sixpack will buy it, you watch
08:28 PM on 09/26/2008
You might be right. Americans are against the plan by a large margin and this position pits McCain against the unpopular Bush AND the unpopular democratic congress who are now on the same side on this... maybe this was the Bush administration/GOP/neocon plan all along?
09:31 PM on 09/26/2008
good......as long as it works

huge win for McCain.....gettting more deregulations and tax cuts for corporations....huge loss for the rest of us......

Why is everyone so freaked out. It is just the banking industry. I mean if the money dries up, we can just go back to trading chicken and hogs locally for services such as healthcare. Problem solved, Next!

What a wonderfully simple answer to such a complex problem. Now you can see why everyone decries the state of education in America.

I didn't hear the specifics of how their plan helps the taxpayers? Maybe they said it while I was busy THROWING UP!!!

I just caught a part of Lou Dobbs. He is calling it the Bush/Democrat bailout plan and wondering what the Dems are doing. The trap is springing for the present and the future by either makiing sure Obama is tied to it and has no money or McCain can wreck the government because it has no money. McCain can say, sorry, we have to take away more support for workers and middle classes.

Chris Matthews said Obama should see it for the craven political move that it is and not vote for it...
