Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Thursday that Sen. John McCain made a "huge mistake" by even discussing canceling the presidential debate with Sen. Barack Obama.

McCain's campaign has said the Republican wouldn't participate in the Mississippi debate Friday unless there was a consensus on the financial crisis, but Obama still wants the debate to go on.

McCain has nowhere to go now but down. He can run away from President Bush, but he can't run away from the Republican Party. The Republicans will be regarded from now on as "the party that wrecked America." Over the weeks ahead, as carnage in the economy and the financial markets ramps up, it will become increasingly clear. It is important that this meme be spread through the internet. I urge all commentators to adopt and spread the idea that the Republicans are "the party that wrecked America." It will work because it is the truth. Use it freely. Just spread the word.

OMG, a sane Republican actually made sense. HUCKABEE 2012 anyone?

I'm with you. I don't agree with Huckabee about a lot, but he always comes of like a decent guy and has my respect. He's really a class act. He was right about McCain trying to duck out of the debates and this 700 Billion package amounts to holding America hostage.

I don't agree with Huckabee politically, but I have found myself wishing more and more that MH would have gotten the GOP nomination! In honestly, I would not have voted for MH, but I wouldn't be scared to the core of my being at the thought of him possibly winning, as I am with Mc/Palin! He seems to be level headed and a reasonable man...not manic /erratic like McCain! McCain's MO is a series of knee-jerk reactions...it's frightening!

Plus, unlike McMoneybags, Huckabee is a populist. I don't care for his particular political positions, but he does care about poor and working people and lives his Christian faith, unlike the hypocrites currently in power.

Which explains why he would never get the WH nomination.

Agreed. He's one of the few candidates from either side of the aisle that seems genuinely interested in regular people's welfare. Although he's definitely a conservative, and therefore with antithetical positions to my own, for example, on Creationism and abortion, he also seems to be capable of accepting a disagreement without turning it into a knock-drown drag-out battle at the drop of a hat.

Hey, like Bill Clinton, Mike Huckabee is a populist. The southern Republicans love him, love him, love him and wished that he had gotten the nomination. Apparently he has heard a lot from the base that this political "grandstanding" on McCain's part was about as obvious as a 500 pound man standing in line at McDonald's ordering a diet coke. Somethin' stinks in Washington - and it needs to get its butt on a plane to Mississippi and participate in a debate!

Rebecca, I cannot stop laughing about what you said! Good writing.

Mike Huckabee. Seems like a nice guy. But underneath that congenial exterior lies a dark inner core.
As right wing, fearful, and deluded as they come.

And as for his comments about McCain...which campaign did McCain "put on hold?"

Keo: You speak the truth. I watched the GOP debates very carefully, and Huckabee is quite expert at smiling in your face while stabbing you in the heart -- what I call the "bless your heart" pass -- where you say something awful about someone or something and try to soften the impact by saying, "bless his/her/its heart." Southerners have perfected this somewhat passive/aggressive approach. The Northern version is to use the following softening phrase beforehand: "With all due respect," then say the offending remark.

I am a democrat and I will vote for Obama but what your saying about Mike Huckabee is the same bull**** that you hear coming from conservatives about Barrack Obama. It serves no useful purpose. Lets all try and spread the truth, not bull

I know Huckabee is supposedly friends with McCain, but it's important for him to criticize his "friend" if only to create some distance from this GOP fiasco since Huckabee, I think, will be the GOP presidential candidate in 2012. Now that's scary. His views, at times, almost make Sarah Palin seem like Grace Slick.

Total bulls***. Mike is a decent human being and to compare him with Palin, defies common sense

You compare Mike Huckabee to Sarah Palin? Please, Mr Huckabee can find Russia on a map and would be a formidible contender and I say this as a loyal democrat.

I am so glad McCain defeated Huckabee because he (Huckabee) was the one Republican I found appealling. His statements today confirm that he would have been a formidable opponent who actually made some sense.

Huckleberry would be as good a choice to replace the now retired John McCain as any.

....

Huckabee = the most senior Republican with his own opinion and a sense of ethics/conscience

I don't agree with him on the issues, but I would admit that he's definately a man of principle and infinitely more honorable then the rest of the lot.

McCain don't hold the American people hostage over this bailout bill. Come on down to Mississippi and debate otherwise it is a guaranteed epic fail. If you at least show up you have a 50% chance still.

Huckabee is ready to be the new Candidate just as soon as the Party gets fed up enough to throw Mccain out

We forget who was running for the Republican nomination back in January. Huckabee was a regional candidate, unknown by most, but so was Guiliani, and he wasn't trusted by most republicans because he is a brash easterner. Romney wasn't trusted because he is a Mormon, and the religious base has a clear definition of "christian" and as rightwing as Mormons generally are, they don't fit the defintion.Let's see, who else was there? (I can hardly remember all of the Democrats [remember Mike Gravel?] let alone remember the Republicans, but they were never on most radar screens.) My gosh, I can remember Ernest Hollings and John Glenn, Gary Hart and Alan Cranston, but I can't remember who the Republicans were this year. Help me out.

You're right Huck, McCain has made huge mistakes all his life, can't change the habits of a lifetime!

Interesting. Mr. "a squirrel in every popcorn popper" can run his mouth, but I didn' hear any solution from him either. I'm not a McCain fan , in fact I'm in the tank for Obama, but I have never heard Huckabee pose a serious answer to a serious question. He always has a humorous story or something totally stupid to say, but he hasn't shed any light on the answers to the problem either. He tries to be funny, but he is just an enertainer, another in the Republican freak show.

You are spot on, Eddy...Huckabee should be called Hackabee. His folksy crap is as transparent as McOpportunist's skin....
