GREENSBORO, N.C. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday called Republican rival John McCain out of touch with middle-class Americans, telling supporters that the GOP senator never once uttered the words "middle class" during their first debate.

"Through 90 minutes of debate, John McCain had a lot to say about me, but he didn't have anything to say about you," Obama told a cheering crowd at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot in downtown Greensboro. "He didn't even say the words 'middle class.' He didn't even say the words 'working people.'"

Obama debuted his post-debate attack on McCain with a campaign swing through North Carolina and Virginia, Republican-leaning states where he thinks he can make inroads.

The Illinois senator is trying capitalize on his debate performance by taking McCain to task for not talking about any plans for helping the middle class in the midst of the country's financial and fiscal crisis.

"Just as important as what we heard from John McCain is what we didn't hear from John McCain," Obama said. "We talked about the economy for 40 minutes and not once did Sen. McCain talk about the struggles of middle-class families. Not once did he talk about what they are facing every day here in North Carolina and across the country."

Watch Obama's ad on the debate:

McCain's campaign suggested Saturday that the Arizona senator had referred to the middle class during the debate when he argued that Obama had voted in favor of higher taxes on families making $42,000 a year and proposed hundreds of billions in new government spending that would place a crushing burden on families and businesses. Obama disputed both of those assertions and said that 95 percent of America taxpayers would not pay more in taxes under his plan.

"If he was honest, Barack Obama knows he was unable to debate the merits of supporting higher taxes on the middle class, and bloated government spending during a looming economic crisis _ it simply proved indefensible last night," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Appearing with Obama on Saturday, running mate Joe Biden called McCain's judgment on every important issue "wrong."

"Last night, John McCain's silence on the middle class was deafening," said Biden, a Delaware senator. "We need more than a brave soldier. We need a wise leader."

The Obama campaign tried to back up that point in its newest ad, a spot released Saturday that also notes McCain never mentioned the middle class during the debate. "McCain doesn't get it," the announcer says. "Barack Obama does."

"We need a president who will fight for the middle class every day, and that's what I will do when I'm in the Oval Office," Obama told the cheering crowd.

Obama advisers were encouraged by his performance in the foreign policy arena at the debate at the University of Mississippi but immediately started dampening expectations for future debates.

"This was supposed to be John McCain's turf, and Barack Obama owned it," Biden said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters the Democrat "spoke really to people in their homes about needing a president who is going to fight for the middle class, who is going to work on things like education and health care."

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15.

The next debate will be a town hall format, and Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion."

Rick Davis Busted: $971,860 In Web Consulting Fees

Newsweek is reporting that Rick Davis took deferred compensation, funneled into his lobbying firm shop, and was racking up huge fees for a related business run out of the same address.

The McCain campaign told reporters the fees were irrelevant because Davis "separated from his consulting firm ... in 2006," according to the campaign's Web site, and he stopped drawing a salary from it. In fact, however, when Davis joined the campaign in January 2007, he asked that his $20,000-a-month salary be paid directly to Davis Manafort, two sources who asked not to be identified discussing internal campaign business told NEWSWEEK. Federal campaign records show the McCain campaign paid Davis Manafort $90,000 through July 2007, when a cash crunch prompted Davis and other top campaign officials to forgo their salaries and work as volunteers. Separately, another entity created and partly owned by Davis"an Internet firm called 3eDC, whose address was the same office building as Davis Manafort's"received payments from the McCain campaign for Web services, collecting $971,860 through March 2008.

There was a 1000% difference in watching the debate in 'split screen' or no split screen.
Without seeing McCain squirm on the split, one could judge this debate as a draw.

On a split screen, McCain came off as near bizarre looking

I was driving to Gallup NM and I heard the debate on xm. I was so sad because I thought the nation would love to hear John punch and kick Obama like a rag doll. But that wasn't the case. The nation is sick and tired of the old bush ways. Obama does speak for us and I love him for that. Cool and calm is back in. Yeah! And the jabs he threw at John was soooo suave . Okay. I'm going to have another beer. El Rancho Hotel is lovely. Go Obama!!!!

McCain doesn't understand ordinary people at all. In fact tonight he was seen eating at CityZen (very nice DC restaurant, I pulled my Zagat out and each diner can expect to pay an average of $107 dollars for their meal) with Lieberman.

While many of us are worried about money it is apparent McCain is not. In fact while his colleagues on both sides of the aisle worked late in to the night (the Repubs ordered pizza, the Dems got 5 Guys), McCain and Lieberman ate a meal that most of us could never afford.

I thought Obama did a great job. The debate was his. McCain was soo angry. I loved it. Barrack did a great job of staying in control. The young Lion defeats the old one. The old Lion needs to give it up. He is beaten. Obama will be our next president, I believe that he will be one of the best.. greg

The horrors of our America will be the deciding factor in this election. The foolishness, the, "can't get over the norm" mentality is hard nut to crack. I'm not inspired by much but Obama inspires me in a a time of need. Obama's grace during the debate will only go so far but in my opinion he should stick with it. NOTHING IS WORKING! Logic rules, considered opinions are to be respected by all.

"john you talk as if the war started in 2007"
lol classic
Obama did call mccain "TOm" and "jim"
which i did find odd..

i said this in my other post.

if we would have stayed focus on afghanastan after 911 we had the respect of the world
we could have went into wazerstan and hunt bin laden where he lives

barack made a great point that we supported a dictator because he was one of our dictators and that we destabilized a democracy and went against the will of the people in pakistan now that women leader is dead and her husband now takes over pakistan. Mccain called him Kadari instead of zadari in debate. Zadari says now he knows why americans love palin so much that she is gorgeous and the campaign staff said go ahead shake hands be close and he said perhaps we should be hugging. hah this from a guy that said "shoot on our troops if we cross the border for bin laden".. hell maybe mccain will give palin up for osama bin laden that would be the biggest surprise ever and thus mccain would be hero once again what ya think?

He said Jim, because the moderator was JIM Lehrer, he then realized that he was supposed to be talking TO John McCain, so he said John. If he said Tom it was probably a slip up trying to talk to who he was supposed to.

Well repubs - it's over. You need to start accepting the fact that Obama is going to win and Dems are going to increase their numbers in Congress. You need to adjust your lives accordingly such as: stop engaging in all your criminal activities - quit all your sexual, gender, and racial abuse - close all your offshore tax havens - and bring the money you have hidden and or stolen back to America.

Your little chapter in history is over and a new era has begun.

You know what, back in the "Jim Crow" days, African Americans were hung for looking a white person directly in his eyes (eye to eye contact). McCain is a product of that time. Just was a thought. He flat out refused to look at Obama.

Well let's not forget that Arizona was the last state to accept MLK birthday as a national holiday. I think McCain is a Hater and should be ashamed at how disrespectful he was.

I know! And I don't understand how some black republicans can vote for McCain. I mean it's fine to be a black republican and vote for the republican nominee. But it should not be okay to vote for the guy, regardless of race, that says MLK was not worth celebrating if you are black.

Go back and grab the transcript. You say he hates the middle class. I say in order to hate someone you have to know WHO they are and John McCain doesn't know them.

rockledge,
John McCain is INDIFFERENT to the middle class. At least if you hate someone or something, you know that they exist. John McCain doesn't know we eixist, if he does he sure has never awknowledged us. I don't think that McCain is afraid of Obama, but he does look like a dying great white shark in the water who on some level might be angry because he knows that he has lost the presidency if things keep on going the way that they are. (and they will, I predict) McCain seems to think that he is entitled to the presidency just because he was shot down and a prisoner of war a half of century ago. He doesn't think that he should have to work for it at ALL and it angers him that no matter what he does, Obama is going to win. Thats because McSame is just like GW Bush on so many levels, rich, out of touch, not too bright, etc. no matter how he keeps on trying to reinvent himself. Also, with his age and poor health, his EXTREMELY poor choice of Sarah Palin for his VP candidate is just plain cynical and SCARY to most thinking people. Obama Biden 08'
