Who knows whether John McCain will figure out a way to take political advantage of this bailout mess, but it's worth noting that he said the reason why he returned to DC was to win over House Republicans, and yesterday he claimed victory.

But before he got to town, Spence Bachus, the top ranking House Republican on the Financial Services Committee was meeting with negotiators on the bailout plan, and when that meeting ended, Bachus appeared with his colleagues to announce a bipartisan framework.

At the same time that Bachus was announcing the deal, John McCain was meeting with John Boehner. Within an hour, the deal had been rejected.
