Local GOP Reps Blasted For Bailout Votes

Five Illinois Republicans who helped defeat the Bush administration's financial rescue bill are under pressure by the National Assn. of Manufacturers to reverse their votes when Congress reconsiders the issue.

They are among 40 Democrats and Republicans the business group is targeting for voting against the bailout Monday, including GOP Reps. Judy Biggert of Hinsdale, Tim Johnson of Urbana, Donald Manzullo of Rockford, Peter Roskam of Wheaton and John Shimkus of Collinsville.

The bill failed 228-205, with only 65 of 199 Republicans voting for it. One Illinois Republican who is retiring, Rep. Jerry Weller, R-Morris, did not vote, but another, Rep. Ray LaHood, R-Peoria, voted yes. Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Highland Park, who faces a tough re-election contest this year, also supported the measure.
