Millennium Park Getting Pavilions Designed By Acclaimed Architects Van Berkel And Hadid

The high-powered committee marking the 100th anniversary of architect Daniel Burnham's influential Plan of Chicago on Thursday will announce events designed to focus public attention on the celebration and leave a legacy of expanded parks, trails and open spaces, as well as improvements to the region's struggling transportation system.

The Burnham Plan Centennial Committee, as the group of civic leaders is known, will announce the events at a conference on sustainable development in Aurora, the state's second-largest city, which has taken the first steps to transform its once-gritty riverfront into a showcase public space.

Most of the events will take place next year, from June to October, with an official opening scheduled for June 19. On that day, centennial organizers will unveil two pavilions in Millennium Park designed by internationally-acclaimed architects Zaha Hadid of Britain and Ben Van Berkel of the Netherlands. The pavilions will stay open for five months before they are taken apart and recycled.
