CBS:

Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott took the stage moments ago as one of the introductory speakers at a rally here for Sarah Palin. After delivering brief remarks in support of Palin, Sheriff Scott flipped the switch and used Barack Obama's middle name in order to incite the crowd of thousands of people who have already gathered here.

"On Nov. 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened," the law enforcement officer said.

All I have to say about this is you people are beyond ridiculous. What did the man do? He is an honest hard working man that is trying to better our society. What happened to freedom of speech? Hussein, Hussein, HUSSEIN. BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA so what I need to be expelled from school now???? Nobody should be punished for using a middle name. That is Obama's own fault he is named Hussein. Don't punish someone else because Baracks parents didnt like him.

Outrageous. Downright dangerous and I thought unethical. From all that I know about Lee County
Sheriff Mike Scott, located in Ft. Myers Florida, I'm assuming he's a city official, elected and UP for re-election. That he would come to a rally in full uniform with a gun and spout out the "Hussein" lie to make people believe (fear) that Barack is a Muslim, when in fact anyone can look up his old friends and classmates and confirm that Barack was born a Christian, raised one and is one. I always thought that people in MIKE SCOTT's position were not supposed to put themselves in compromising positions. But he has yet to be punished in any way, shape or form. I will write AND call his office and speak to Ft Myers internal affairs. Keep in mind emails are not kept private by Florida's law. This is the very state that was stolen from Al Gore--imagine if he had been president???

Best way to deal with Lee County for this outrage is to NOT deal with Lee County.

We just canceled our convention of 500 professionals and 200+ students for late next year that we were planning for Sanibel, Fort Myers, and Lee County. The Sheriff's failure to understand how offensive - and a clear example of religious and racial bigotry - just cost the people who voted for him MILLIONS of dollars. His refusal to apologize "sealed" that deal!

Tampa Bay's a shorter drive for me anyway.

Update: Good news!

I was appalled when this story broke and immediately emailed the sheriff's office to convey my disgust. Apparently, many others did the same. There's been so much backlash on this story, in fact, that Mike Scott is now under federal investigation for possible violation of the Hatch Act (http://www.osc.gov/ha_state.htm), which states (in part):

"Covered state and local employees may not-

* use official authority or influence to interfere with or affect the results of an election or nomination "

The sheriff was in full uniform at the time of his ugly statement, so I hope the feds find him guilty and cause him to lose his job. What a disgraceful display from an officer of the law...

I’d buy Sheriff Scott’s lame excuse if he’d introduced her as Sarah Louise Heath Palin, running mate of John Sidney McCain III.

Lee County Sheriff's Department receives one million dollars per year from the Federal government. WBBH TV, Fort Meyers, Fla. is reporting that the federal government is already investigating Sheriff Scott for his in uniform, public endorsement. I'll bet this clown sleeps in his uniform.

Sheriff Scott is running for reelection where I live, I am hoping he will be left wondering what happened if he looses. I will definately vote against him, he is running against two other candidates. If he did this in civilian clothes, I would be o.k. with that but not in his uniform. He has never met a camera angle or audio mike he didn't like. The Sheriff is so enjoying his 15 minutes of fame.

The issue is that the Sheriff engaged in political activity while wearing his uniform and under "color of authority." It is highly unprofessional, and in this sheriff's case, possibly against federal law (the Hatch Act).

This sheriff is an embarrassment to his profession.

In my Department, you do this and you get fired.

I have never seen this in 24 years of law enforcement, and in my department you would face heavy suspension time or get fired. Definite Hatch Act implications. Sheriff Mike Scott can be reached at www.lee-county.com Tell him to leave his uniform at home next time he wants to make a public endorsement. I wonder if he was getting paid while on stage.
