Halo 3 Recon: New Halo Game Announced, Watch The Trailer (VIDEO)

Yesterday, Bungie announced the next game in their overwhelmingly popular Halo series: Halo 3 Recon. Bungie's website had this to say:

Bungie has several projects underway within the studio, one of which is a brand new campaign experience for Halo 3 that we teased two weeks ago. Now, at long last, we can lift the shroud of secrecy and shed a little more light on what we've been working on.

We'll have more to say later, but for now, check out our official announcement trailer which builds upon the teaser and provides new insights into what awaits next Fall.

Gaming sites have exploded with speculation about Halo 3 Recon

What's the game about? This is the Halo 3 stand-alone expansion game that popped up during the TGS keynote yesterday. While Bungie personnel (specifically, community and PR director Brian Jarrard, and writer Luke Smith) didn't show anything more than the trailer we've all seen, they took some time to talk some basics with the media -- reiterating facts such as how the game is a standalone retail product in a box, and how it will provide hours of new single-player content in addition to new multiplayer content such as the Mythic Map Pack (which will also be available as a download in early 2009). Oh, and that it's still a first-person shooter and is not a squad-based game.

When talking about the genesis of Halo 3: Recon, Jarrard described Halo 3's immense popularity by citing figures such as "4.6-billion player games [Jarrard pointed out that if two people are in a match, that counts as two player games for tracking purposes] and half a billion files downloaded on Halo 3's file-sharing system." He then described Recon as "a way to support the loyal fanbase while giving them something different."
