In addition to launching a massive robocall campaign raising Obama's past association with Bill Ayers as a campaign issue, the Republican National Committee is out with a vicious attack mailer suggesting that the Democratic nominee is not just soft on terror, but willing to talk to terrorist leaders.

In a pamphlet forwarded to the Huffington Post by a Virginia reader, the RNC claims that Obama "thinks terrorists just need a good talking to." Obama has never said such a thing. Rather, he has discussed the need to open up diplomatic dialogues with heads of state, whether friends or foe.

The first page of the mailer contains a shot of a individuals standing at an airport window with a large plane outside -- obviously designed to evoke memories of the 9/11 hijackings.

"Terrorists Don't Care Who They Hurt," it reads.

Inside is a list of Obama quotes designed to paint Obama as a weak-kneed diplomat, too willing to meet "unconditionally" with leaders of rogue states.

"Islamic extremists want our laws changed, our culture destroyed and our families converted. We don't. What is there to talk about?" the mailer asks.

The ad amplifies charges that the RNC and McCain campaign have made against Obama in other forums, and comes amidst a veritable downpour of behind-the-scenes GOP attacks against the Illinois Democrat. In addition to the Ayers-themed attack, Talking Points Memo has documented four McCain/RNC robocalls running in multiple states:

* One that questions Obama's patriotism by saying he put "Hollywood above America" during the financial crisis.

* One that says that Obama and Dems "aren't who you think they are" and claims they merely "say" they want to keep us safe.

* One that attaches Obama to "domestic terrorist Bill Ayers," whose group "killed Americans."

* And one claiming that: "Barack Obama callously denied newborns needed medical attention by opposing a measure to force doctors to preserve their lives when they survive botched abortions."

If you receive any notable political mailings (from the RNC or anyone else), please let us know.

Well if it's all about the senate then let them continue spending millions on these old useless attacks against Obama while we vote in a Dem Majority.

The RNC really is grotesque and desperate, isn't it. Sad thing is, half the entire world is controlled by just this kind of tripe.

The only Americans killed by the Weather Underground were the three young Weathermen who died when a bomb they were building was accidentally discharged.
Bill Ayers and his wife had long since ceased to be affiliated with the group when other former members, in 1981, commited the deadly armed robbery of a Brinks truck.
(My understanding is that the group pretty well disowned the two when they began to question the tactics- While it is true that Bill Ayers has never repudiated the bombings he has expressed regret that violence seemed a neccessity and has spoken of "hubris" and "arrogance" in their youthful conviction that they had all the answers and the only answers.)

We need to vote them out across the board in every state and tell them why.

What is equally despicable, and downright stupid, is the question at the top . . . "Why should we care what they have to say?" McCain is showing why he finished almost at the bottom of his class. Isn't anyone in his campaign familiar with Sun Tzu's famous maxim, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer"?

One of the biggest mistakes we made in Iraq, and the Middle East in general, is getting involved in cultures we know nothing about. How can we adequately prepare ourselves to deal with anyone, friend or enemy, if we don't know as much about them as possible? What kind of idiots believe that's a good way to protect oneself?

In business, it's called competitive intelligence and everyfreakingbody does it. What is wrong with the McCain campaign? Man! They are truly playing to the lowest uncommon denominator; the dumbest of the dumb. The apparently large percentage of the population incapable of independent, critical thinking.

The Republican Filth Machine thinks it can steal this election away from the American people like they have taken everything else. I am sick and I am tired and I am honestly at the point where I can not accept this anymore. I know we show our strength by voting and electing as many Democrats as possible. But the Republican Filth STILL is allowed to exist. Every election I worked for, every candidate I voted for, it was just an accepted fact that Republicans were going to say and do the most heinous things against us. We were rational, they accused us of hating our country. Or hating families, or hating God. I have heard enough, and if Obama wins it still won't stop. It didn't stop under Clinton. Eight years of filth and accusations.
I can imagine the Hell they are preparing to bring down when Obama is elected. Will their Filth ever stop? Will their hate, racism, fear mongering, disrespect - will any of it ever stop?

We should send any terrible ads like these to all Republicans running for Senate and the House and tell them that due to their associations with this kind of filth, we will be voting a straight Democratic ticket in our state.

Could that work? Are we ready to overthrow them if they steal another election-because I can't take it anymore either and this time I am willing ready and able to fight back!

This stuff is such a turn off. I think It will backfire big time for McCain. I know two undecided family members-registered independents- who are now leaning towards Obama because of the character attacks by McCain.

This is a tactic (along with the robo calls) to tighten the race so it can be easily s.t.o.l.e.n. BTW, another poster pointed out that the NRA has already started making phone calls telling folks that if Obama is elected, he will take their guns away. Sound familiar?

I received this piece of garbage in the mail. At first, I was tempted to mark it "Return to Sender" and put it in the mailbox. But then, I realized I was low on toilet paper...

This nothing more than the GOP realizing that the battle for the white house is lost, and launching everything in their arsenal without regard for ramifications, since like Sarah Palin, they have nothing to lose by making up absolutely anything that comes to mind in the hopes that something sticks.

I can't believe the hypocrisy coming from the McCain campaign, this is just plain BS that these desperate ad tactics are not a bigger issue. (God forbid) Anything happens to Sen. Obama, by this hate machine. Hope history doesn't repeat itself here with a death of very loved and honored American like Sen. Obama, like the late Kennedys and Dr. King. The GOP and McCain/ Palin should be held responsible for this hate mongering.

I agree with you, but it feels so uncomfortable to even think it. Obama is clearly above the junk that's being thrown at him, and my respect for him just grows. He is smart, funny, sensible, and very very presidential. I voted for Kennedy so am sure we need someone young and smart as President. Kennedy was "dangerous" because of his religion; it was a big deal to elect a Catholic, and many in the country were convinced that he would wreck the country. Sadly, it wrecked him.
