Metra Not Raising Fares

Metra Not Raising Fares

Metra will unveil its 2009 budget today, but unlike the CTA and Pace, the commuter rail line says there will be no fare increase or service cuts next year.

But without a statewide public works program, Metra riders are likely to see more mechanical problems, delays and bumpier rides, officials warn. The 10 percent fare hike Metra imposed in February allowed the agency to put $10 million into its capital program, the first time it was able to do this in years.

But Metra says it needs many millions more to maintain and expand the nation's largest commuter rail system.
