WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raised more than $150 million in September, a stunning and unprecedented eruption of political giving that has given him a wide spending advantage over rival John McCain.

The Democrat's campaign released the figure Sunday, one day before it must file a detailed report of its monthly finances with the Federal Election Commission.

Obama's money is fueling a vast campaign operation in an expanding field of competitive states. It also has underwritten a wave of both national and targeted video advertising unseen before in a presidential contest.

Campaign manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail to supporters Sunday morning, said the campaign had added 632,000 new donors in September, for a total of 3.1 million contributors to the campaign. He said the average donation was $86.

The Democratic National Committee, moments later, announced that it raised $49.9 million and had $27.5 million in the bank at the start of October. The party has been raising money through joint fundraising events with Obama and can use the money to assist his candidacy.

Obama's numbers are possible because he opted out of the public financing system for the fall campaign. McCain, the Republican nominee, chose to participate in the system, which limits him to $84 million for the September-October stretch before the election.

Obama initially had promised to accept public financing if McCain did, but changed his mind after setting primary fundraising records. His extraordinary fundraising is bound to set a new standard in politics that could doom the taxpayer-paid system. Many Republicans have begun to second-guess McCain's decision to participate in the program.

McCain, reacting to Obama's announcement, raised the potential for fundraising abuses. He said Obama is "completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the costs and spending on campaigns under control. ... That has unleashed now in presidential campaigns a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal, and then we will fix it again"

While McCain said he was not suggesting the Obama campaign had done anything illegal or improper, he said "history shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal."

Obama's monthly figure pushed his total fundraising to $605 million. No presidential candidate has ever run such an expensive campaign. His campaign raised $65 million in August, his previous best.

"The overall numbers obviously are impressive," Plouffe said in a campaign video. "But it's what's beneath the numbers in terms of average Americans who have had enough, who want a change and who are really fueling this campaign."

With his money, and a favorable political wind at his back, Obama has secured his foothold in states that have voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past. But he has also been able to expand the contest to reliably Republican states, forcing McCain and the Republican Party to spend their money defensively.

Plouffe pointed out that the campaign is now spending resources in West Virginia. Obama running mate Joe Biden was scheduled to campaign in Charleston, W.Va., on Friday and the campaign has secured television advertising in the state for the next two weeks, according to ad data obtained by The Associated Press. Plouffe hinted at further expansion, noting that public opinion polls show the race tightening in Georgia and North Dakota.

As much as Obama raised, he needed a big fundraising month to justify his decision to bypass the public finance system. Financially, he has been competing not only against McCain, but against the GOP, which raised $66 million in September.

The combined Obama and DNC totals for September now give the Democrats a distinct financial advantage going into Election Day, just 16 days away.

McCain spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

That's an insane amount to raise in just one month.

I presume it's due to a lot of "panic donors" who want to be in the President's good grace and possibly get invited to the Inaugural Ball.

No, more likely it was people like me, who since McCain chose Palin at the beginning of September, donated every time McCain and Palin said or did something infuriating. I can tell you from the number of times I donated last month that they did a lot of dumb infuriating things.

I didn't eat out a lot last month, but I felt pretty good when I hit that donate button.

Yeah, since the average donation was $86 and all. They figured that was about the right amount to get invited to the Inaugural Ball.

I gave $25 and I got a t-shirt too and if I can watch Obama being sworn in from the comfort of my living room my donations will be so worth it.

McCain's campaign is funded by socialism.

Obama gets his money directly from the people who want to give it.

Hehe.

That's what I call REAL public financing.

BTW: Chris Matthews on Hardball today said that Obama was wrong not to accept public funding like he said he would. First -- he never said he would, SECOND, since I'm not a lobbyist or PAC, my $25 dollar donations ARE PUBLIC FINANCING!

Let Chris know how off base he was on that one: msnbc.commsnbc.com

Now that Obama is financially set for the next two weeks, if you have money to donate, might I suggest you look to some of the closer House and Senate races. We have a real chance to pick up a huge majority in both houses, and while Obama had a record September, the DNC is taking out a $15 million loan to shore up some of the close races. They could use our help.

Here is the latest list of competitive Congressional races.

A little here and there to some of these Dem candidates will make a world of difference.

All for that, particularly Tinklenberg -- to beat that fac*ist Bachmann -- BUT . . .

Obama is trying to fight against the voter fraud in the battleground states like West Virginia. People who are voting for Obama are watching the machines flip their votes to mccain and other republicans. The Obama campaign is going to need money to fight the legal battle to protect every single voter's rights in court. this will be expensive.

DON'T STOP DONATING TO OBAMA.

Thanks to a downturn in the economy, I had to fold my consulting business. I'm living on retirement savings until I can find a full-time job, so every dime is precious to me. Given the state of the economy and the stock market particularly, I'm frighened for my short & long-term financial future. But I'm more frightened for the future of this country, so I've donated $70 to Obama plus given money to El Tinklenberg in Minnesota (to help him defeat Michelle Bachmann).

Juniper, I know how you feel. I've been forgoing restaurant visits in order to give to Obama. I think many of us find times tough indeed, but we have also learned in these past 8 years the consequences of being complacent about the Presidency.

The price is too high to continue on the same path. Unnecessary war, and the death of thousands of our soldiers. Loss of jobs for our friends and neighbors. Foreclosure signs littering our communities. Crippling debt as the legacy to our children and grandchildren. Lowered esteem among our allies and enemies in the world, and the compromise of our safety as a result. Loss of our precious rights. We can't let this happen again.

Good point. Interesting too that the Rethug money is as dirty as can be, while my money donated to O's campaign came from the 'hard work' that Repubs always praise.

I have never given to a canidate before, but everytime I hear the mistatement (lies) by the McCain supporter, I get so upset I donate to Obama and Biden. I guess others have the same thoughs - When giving, I don't give with the intent to help Obama and Biden. I do o because it is necessary to prevent what McCain and Pailin are doing. Our nation does not need hate and division during these times.

We topped off our giving today, maxing out our campaign limit. The holiday budget's going to be $0, but this is the best gift we'll ever give to our children and grandchildren. Everyone else agreed to do the same in our family - who needs another scarf or CD with the future of our country is at stake?

Now, get out an vote, volunteer for the phone bank, drive your elderly neighbors to the polls, call your college-aged family members and make sure they vote. Can't wait for November 4th to come and go so we can get on with the future.

Sure do wish, I must admit, that they shorten this campaign period next go around. The idea that the next president (Obama, from my mouth to God's ears...) will have to got back on the campaign trail in two years is awful!

I agree. I've already told family and friends to stop buying junk we don't need just to feed our consumption habit. Instead, I hope they save the money or pay down debts.

Our country needs a serious attitude adjustment, and it begins at home. Conservation and living within our means. Getting our financial houses in order, and looking to give within the community. The last thing we Americans need is more 'stuff'. There is greater reward in having a healthy and sharing society.

We've told everyone not to buy for us this holiday season too. We really don't care, as long as we are together and Obama has been elected the next President of the United States.

I'm in California and do what I can (phone calls) to get out the vote. This is a blue state and most of the pressure on Nov 4 will be on the swing states. I implore all of you reading this from the "purple" states and those that are light blue and light red to do whatever you can to get out the vote. Republicans know that if there is a large turnout, they will not win. Sorry to put all the pressure on you guys, but...

Also, McCain is sounding more and more like Grampa Simpson every day; talk about "sour grapes".
