AFL-CIO Hits McCain On Economy In New Robocall

The major labor union AFL-CIO is putting out a new anti-McCain robocall, hitting the Arizona Republican for supporting economic policies that benefited Wall Street over Main Street.

The call, first reported by The National Political Do Not Contact Registry, features a woman named Sue declaring McCain's policies to be a "disaster for the middle class."

Hi, this is Sue with an important message from Working America about the current economic crisis. You should have just received a piece of mail from us about how John McCain's economic policies have been a disaster for the middle class. John McCain has gotten us into this economic crisis. He supported sending our jobs overseas and he supported getting rid of the rules for the fat cats on Wall Street. At the same time he has done nothing to help struggling families on Main Street. Now he wants to continue the same failed policies. Working families can't afford four more years of this.

This is one of the few occasions that Obama or his allies have gone after McCain through robocalls, a technique that the Republican nominee has deployed at great length. It's hard to imagine that the Democratic ticket will lose the political high ground, because the topic of McCain's robocalls -- the association of Obama and Bill Ayers -- is far more nefarious than matters pertaining to the economy. In addition, as Karen Nussbaum, an executive director with Working America -- the community affiliation of the AFL-CIO -- tells the Huffington Post, this campaign is directed at the group's own members.

"It is not a hate-filled innuendo filled call to the public to get them freaked out," she said, adding that approximately 500,000 people received the call and the accompanying mail piece.
