Race Boating: Swift Boat Backer Funds Racist Mail

Swift Boat funder Robert Perry, a top national Republican donor, is funding overtly racist attack mail this cycle. It's not Swift Boating. It's Race Boating.

A group called "Empower Texans," chaired by Tim Dunn of Midland, an associate of Republican Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick, attacked Democratic state House candidate Joel Redmond of Pasadena with a direct mail piece featuring fuzzy images of black and Hispanic lawmakers (plus Barack Obama), several black birds resembling crows, and a picture of the white Redmund. The tag line: "Birds of a feather flock together."

I live in Texas, luckily, it's Austin Tx! That ad would not fly here. If 8 years of George Bush didn't do me in, this having to contribute to democratic candidates fighting the good fight against these boors will. Now I really really dislike people that cost me money. How is this racist? It's a collage of photos. Is there no way this could be insinuating that this guys ideas and policies are the same as these other guys? Given that the ad calls Redmond a liberal democrat and states that he has aligned himself with other liberal democrats I'm tempted to believe that the association is one of ideology and not some kind of hidden racist message that it seems only democrats can view.

Of course this is the same crowd that called showing Obama's picture and showing Raines picture on TV was also racist.

Just spoke to someone from Redmond's office. They have been out all day campaigning and just got back to the office to find a bunch of pay pal notices, a few papers have tried to contact them and they had no clue as to why. I told the guy about all of you wonderful folks at HuffPo and told him to come check out the site and see what is going on. They are realllllly very excited about what is happening. Thanks you guys for helping this cat out.

Texas isn't a swing state, but they are going all it there. I think that this illustrates a shift in the McCain campaign path to victory. With Iowa and New Mexico going blue, the best shot McCain has is to tie. In the event of a 269 tie, the popular vote would be grounds to stand on to make the case that McCain should be declared the winner by the House. Texas is the most populated red state, and thus is the biggest well to tap when going for a popular vote victory.

It's the only way to explain some of the tactics the Republicans have taken of late.
