Aldermen Easy On Top Cop Despite High Crime Rate

Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis presented the City Council today with a budget that will cut 200 civilian jobs and reorganize top brass, and faced questions from aldermen about increases in violent crime across the city.

But two hours into the hearing, aldermen were considerably more genteel and complimentary of the superintendent's performance, 10 months into his term, compared to his last appearance before the same body this summer. Aldermen acknowledged Weis' efforts to revamp his department in the face of rising crime.

Weis said he did not want to make cuts to the department, but said in his opening remarks he believed the cuts, primarily in civilian jobs, would not deter crime-fighting. He also talked about a new Mobile Strike Force he hopes will cut down violent crime by targeting gangs and guns.
