Dick Lugar, is Indiana's Republican, senior senator and has frequently been named as a top choice for Obama's secretary of state. Lugar is regarded as a foreign policy expert and has chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, now chaired by Joe Biden. Obama recently stoked cabinet predictions by citing Lugar at the final debate as one of the people "who have shaped my ideas [on foreign policy] and who will be surrounding me in the White House."

Marc Ambinder mentioned Lugar as a possible secretary of state, and a recent New York Times article also mentioned Lugar as a top choice.

For his part, a spokesman for Lugar said that he had no interest in serving in the White House...

"He's been very clear that he won't be serving in any administration, that he likes his current job and will stay put," Lugar spokesman Andy Fisher said in an email.

...but then, these statements sometimes have a way of turning around when one is actually offered such a position.

I agree completely with athenasword regarding both Hagel and Lugar. I had the feeling about Chuck when he announced his retirement as well as his endorsement of Obama. As for Dick Lugar, he has already worked with Barack, so moving forward in party unity would be a smart move. I believe that having 2-3 Repubs in his cabinet will smooth the transition and help to build consensus during the turbulent times ahead. I am extremely hopeful that Pres. Obama will assemble a powerfully diverse coalition government which will truly move us forward.

Senator Lugar has been in office for a very long time, mayor of Indianapolis from 68-75, and in the Senate ever since. He made a (failed) run for the presidency himself, and I believe probably understands his limitations. He's in his late 70s now, and coming to the end of a long and mostly honorable career.

The Senator is a practical man who has resisted the temptation to "go hard right" to get himself re-elected, because he's competent and never had to. He has a profound sense of duty, and I suspect if a President Obama were to ask, he might say yes. He'd do a good job, I think.

The only thing against him is that he's a Republican. Perhaps President Obama would prefer a Democrat.

Chuck Hagel should have been VP.

But since Biden was picked it would be better if Hagel served as Sec. Of Defense.

Lugar would be great as Sec. Of State!

If you care about our veterans and this country of ours...

...Don't vote for John McCain.

McCain voted against our troops MANY times in the senate.

John McCain voted AGAINST 20 million dollars for veteran care facilities.

John McCain voted AGAINST $322 million for safety equipment for our troops in Iraq.

John McCain voted AGAINST $1 billion dollars in new equipment for the National Guard.

John McCain OPPOSED Jim Webb's G.I. Bill.

John McCain voted AGAINST $430 million for veterans outpatient care.

Barack voted FOR all of these troop support initiatives.

They deserve better than McCain.

We deserve better than McCain.
