McCain Attacks Obama's Patriotism

John McCain unveiled a new attack on Barack Obama's patriotism Saturday, jumping all over - and taking out of context - remarks made yesterday in which the Democratic nominee said the Iowa Caucuses vindicated his faith in the American public.

Campaigning in Springfield, Virginia, McCain told the crowd that he had always had faith in his country and - dinging his opponent - claimed that the United States "has never had to prove anything to me."

For all the politics at play here - certainly, the GOP has won many elections painting their opponents as not loving of country - there is much to quibble with.

For starters, at various points during this campaign, McCain - whose surrogates and vice president have often gone after Obama on this front - has confirmed that he believes Obama to be a patriot. Moreover, the Republican nominee at one point in his life made comments similar to those offered by the Illinois Democrat.

Speaking about his experience in Vietnam, he described his time as a POW as one that tested and affirmed his love of country.

"I think it makes you a better person," he told Fox News' Sean Hannity in March 2008. "Obviously, it makes you love America. I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company, but probably the most important thing about it, Sean, is that I was privileged to have the opportunity to serve in the company of heroes."

Past statements aside, if one actually takes a look at what Obama said, and what he has said before, it is hard to interpret in anyway that he doubted the United States. Just look at the sentences before his "faith" remark, in which he lavishly praises the American people, who he "knew" were "decent" and "generous."

"I had confidence in the people of Iowa because I knew that the American people are a decent people and a generous people, willing to work hard and sacrifice for future generations," the Senator told a crowd in Des Moines on Friday. "No where was that truer than here in Iowa."

Those remarks, as the Obama camp pointed out Saturday afternoon, are almost identical to ones made by the Senator even before the Iowa caucus.

"Most of all, I believed in the power of the American people to be the real agents of change in this country - because we are not as divided as our politics suggests; because we are a decent, generous people willing to work hard and sacrifice for future generations; and I was certain that if we could just mobilize our voices to challenge the special interests that dominate Washington and challenge ourselves to reach for something better, there was no problem we couldn't solve - no destiny we couldn't fulfill. Ten months later, Iowa, you have vindicated that faith."

There were no screams of treason then. Rather those comments were interpreted for what they were: Obama thanking the Iowa public for exhibiting the characteristics that he believes make America, America.

"It's pathetic that John McCain would take a statement Barack Obama has been making for a year about his faith in the American people and distort it to attack his patriotism," spokesman Bill Burton said in response to McCain's attack Saturday. "Sadly, this is what we've come to expect from a desperate, dishonorable campaign that will say anything in a failed attempt to win this election."

Apparently Senator McCain either does not know the meaning of the word "vindicate" or he thinks that no one will ever call him on it.

Apparently attacking John McCain's patriotism isn't allowed on huffington post.

I recommend looking at http://vietnamveteransagainstmccain.com/ for information on just how patriotic this fellow is.

Make no comments about Han.oi or song.bi.rd least you get your comment unapproved.

Never mind the fact that it is perfectly acceptable for trolls to smear Obama through the mudd.

Heaven forbid there is accountability for McCains past transgressions. Or his history of not supporting hard working and sacrificing americans. Heaven forbid.

I didn't realize he was actually Joe McCarthy.

OK... hold on a minute here. Was McCain wearing a flag pin when he said this? Because the GOP sorta set that basic standard when it comes to patriotism. And if I remember correctly, McCain is 0 and 3 when it came to flag pin-wearing at the debates.

He did not have his flag pin on SNL last night.

Who cares about pins, here are my predictions of what will happen if Obama wins.
Income taxes raised on everybody who makes more than 100k a year because he can't pay for his social programs, redistribution of the wealth begins .Obama raises the white flag and pulls us out of Iraq, Al Queda begins attacking our interests overseas. Obama and the greenies destroy the auto industry with economy destroying regulations and pollution standards.
Obama and democrats attempt to destroy the second amendment, militia groups begin to form all over the country, civil war begins.

Its nice how you swallowed the fear campaign so easily, the Repubs love you. Mix in a little "The Turner Diaries" and you can scare yourself pretty badly. Did you remember to plug in the night light. I am not scared 'my friend'. No matter who wins, the sun will still rise on us all. But I cant sit by and deny what has happened to our country the last eight years. Thats whats really frightful. And I think enough of my fellow Americans are sick of it too. So on Wednesday morning, BOOO! You better get used to it buddy.

What's happened to Sen. McCain? Where's the so-called moral integrity he said he's lead his life upon? Can he not hear the desperation and hate in his rhetoric? He's reduced himself to a ranting fear-mongering angry old white man - that's sad.

I would be upset and angry if I was running for office and the liberal media was attacking me and supporting my opponent. It won't be the media that gets Obama elected, it will be the brainwashed voters.

vindicate: show to be right by providing justification or proof

So, Obama had faith in the American people, and it's been vindicated. And the issue is? Phony as usual from McCain. I'm so tired of this who's more American contest they're having with themselves.

Obama used "vindicated" again tonight. You think someone lent Johnny a dictionary in the meantime? -- 'cause Johnny evidently can't use that word correctly.

No, John McCain is not a coward, simply a man who lost himself in his ambition to become president.

McCain says: I"ve been tested.. Please someone tell me how McCain has been tested.. If you call sitting on a ship off the coast of cuba during the cuban missile crisis a test, i don"t think so.. He has never had to make a critical judgement or handle a crisis.. and if his vote to go to war with Iraq was a test, then he failed..In my opinion his claim of " I've been tested " is just plain hypocracy.Ask John McCain why he used his influence to have his POW records permanently sealed from the public,Could it be he was a "Hanoi Hilton songbird" who collaborated with the enemy. That was his code name the Vietnamese called him " Songbird " coz he told them all they wanted to know...

McCain is speaking in Scranton, PA, and is spewing his typical lies and half-truths about Obama. Every other sentence contains the words "my friends". I can hardly listen to him and his rabid "pro-American" crowds. Intelligent people have to see that McCain is an angry, impulsive, delusional old man who doesn't get it!! Lieberman is standing behind him with his perpetual smirk. Pennsylvanians, don't be fooled by his rhetoric. He is misrepresenting Obama's policies and plan for our country in an attempt to scare you. McCain talks change but he is stuck in the past; he doesn't know what real change is. Obama has laid out a realistic plan for his Presidency; McCain has not.

Quite interesting that as John tells his POW tale of woe he leaves out the part where the first thing he did after being captured was to offer up military secrets for better treatment! Real hero huh?

Of course McCain attacked Obama's patriotism. He is a white, privledged, rich guy who has turned into a racist. If he had not had an admiral for a father, McCain would have been booted from the Naval Academy and later the Navy. McCain. like Bush, has never been held accountable for anything that he has done. Now, since he has nothing to offer the country, he is attacking the only person who has ideas to fix the massive problems brought to you by bush and the republicans.

I would argue he was ALWAYS a racist, he has just let it show due to having to, i.e. losing.

Yeah, it's easy to be all smiles (or creepy McCain smiles, if you will) when things go well. But the true McCain is showing himself, now that he is losing.
