With Election Day looming and the polls suggesting John McCain faces a daunting challenge, the GOP and the McCain campaign have ramped up their negative attacks on Barack Obama. Just to start, McCain attacked Obama's patriotism and Republicans made much hay out of a video that purportedly shows Obama attending a party where Palestinian, and Columbia University Professor, Rashid Khalidi was also a guest. Below is a round up of some of McCain's and the GOP's 11th hour attacks.

McCain Attacks Obama's Patriotism: McCain seized on - and took out of context - remarks made by Obama today to question the Democrat's patriotism:

John McCain unveiled a new attack on Barack Obama's patriotism Saturday, jumping all over - and taking out of context - remarks made yesterday in which the Democratic nominee said the Iowa Caucuses vindicated his faith in the American public.

Campaigning in Springfield, Virginia, McCain told the crowd that he had always had faith in his country and - dinging his opponent - claimed that the United States "has never had to prove anything to me..."

...Past statements aside, if one actually takes a look at what Obama said, and what he has said before, it is hard to interpret in anyway that he doubted the United States. Just look at the sentences before his "faith" remark, in which he lavishly praises the American people, who he "knew" were "decent" and "generous."

GOP Flier: Obama More A Friend To Criminals Than Cops: HuffPost's Sam Stein reports on a GOP flier circulating in Virginia that accuses Obama of being more of a friend to criminals than to cops:

The pamphlet, flagged by a recipient in the state and a new version of one previously reported in several other states, includes a photo of a quiet suburban neighborhood and young children playing on in a classroom - the implicit message being, Obama will make you and your family less safe.

"Protecting your family comes first," reads the front.

"A record of being soft on crime," reads the back. "Barack Obama has consistently opposed tougher penalties for criminals - including major offenses - allowing criminals to remain on the streets."

GOP Mailer In Pennsylvania Suggests Electing Obama Could Lead To Second Holocaust: Talking Points Memo flags another GOP flier that is particularly nasty:

A reader sends in a nasty mailer that just hit Philadelphia-area in-boxes, blasted out by a GOP group called the Republican Jewish Coalition, suggesting that a vote for Barack Obama could lead to another "tragic outcome" for the Jewish people.
Story continues below
advertisement

"Concerned about Barack Obama? You should be," the mailer warns. "History has shown that a naive and weak foreign policy has resulted in tragic outcomes for the Jewish people."

The mailer helpfully notes that the image is a pic of Obama speaking in Germany.

House GOP Leader Calls Obama "Chicken Shit": House Minority leader John Boehner shockingly used an expletive to describe Obama for his "present" votes in the Illinois State Senate:

House minority leader John Boehner's spokesman confirms the accuracy of this quote, from an Ohio student newspaper:

"Now, listen, I've voted 'present' two or three times in my entire 25-year political career, where there might have been a conflict of interest and I didn't feel like I should vote," Boehner said. "In Congress, we have a red button, a green button and a yellow button, alright. Green means 'yes,' red means 'no,' and yellow means you're a chicken s***.

"And the last thing we need in the White House, in the oval office, behind that big desk, is some chicken who wants to push this yellow button."

Regional McCain Manager Denies Obama's Citizenship: Tim McClellan, a regional manager in Florida for the McCain campaign, isn't sold on the idea of Obama as an American citizen:

The most surprising statement was something we've been hearing from McCain supporters but not from anyone actually on the McCain or RNC payroll. "I have strong concerns that Obama is not a citizen. I suspect the U.S. Supreme Court will prove that Obama's not a citizen," Tim continued. "Did he go to Indonesia and become an Indonesian citizen, and if so, did he take steps to regain his (U.S.) citizenship? There's no seal on his birth certificate and the font is wrong."

Conservative Group To Run Rev. Wright Ads Through Election Day: National Republican Trust PAC has a major ad buy on national networks to run anti-Wright attacks:

Get ready for a deluge of Wright rantings.

The National Republican Trust PAC, which has been airing an ad attacking Barack Obama's association with Reverend Wright in three battleground states, has now put down for a national buy on five networks that will last from now through election day, a consultant with the group confirms to me.

The ad will run nationally on Fox, CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC for the next five days, the consultant, Rick Wilson, says -- "all the way until election day."

The ad, which you can watch here, features the now-infamous footage of Wright's livelier sermons, and intones that Obama "never complained" about Wright "until he ran for President," adding that Obama is "too radical, too risky."

Obama Campaign Manager Questions Timing Of Aunt Story: David Axelrod is suspicious of the timing of the story about Obama's aunt living in the country illegally:

Speaking to reporters today, Obama chief strategist David Axelrod addressed reports that Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of Obama's Kenyan father, has been living illegally in the United States for four years. Axelrod expressed some skepticism about the timing of the news, which first broke in the Times of London and was confirmed by the Associated Press in the waning days of the presidential race.

"The campaign issued a statement on that," Axelrod told reporters, "And I don't have anything more to add to it, other than I think people are suspicious about stories that surface in the last 72 hours of a national campaign.

"I think that they're going to take that," he added, "They're going to put it in that context."

In a statement earlier today, the campaign said that "Sen. Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws should be followed."

More GOP Mailers Hitting The Streets: A new GOP flier hits Obama on lobbyists, taxes and socialism:

The anti-Obama mail keeps piling up. A reader forwarded a set of pieces that go after the Illinois Democrat for not, really, being a thorn in the side of lobbyists and for planning to raise taxes alongside his liberal allies in Congress,

The first piece accuses Obama of funneling the "hard-earned money of America's taxpayers to pay his friends and family with political favors."

As evidence the literature cites the Senator's relationship with Tony Rezko - the indicted Chicago insider - and two earmarks that Obama helped bring to Illinois; projects that, tangentially, were connected to his wife or a political supporter. It is, in short, thin gruel.

McCain Campaign Demands LA Times Rlease Khalidi Video: The McCain campaign sought to portray Obama as an extremist after learning that the LA Times has video of Obama attending the same party as Rashid Khalidi. HuffPost's Seth Colter Walls discovers that this guilt-by-association game will be difficult for McCain to pull off:

In regards to Khalidi, however, the guilt-by-association game burns John McCain as well.

During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.

A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi's Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, "West Bank: CPRS" on page 14 of this PDF.)

The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi's group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."

Have any of you researched black liberation theology? Sometimes the truth is negative, it's not McCain's fault that Obama subscribes to that load of crap.

Oh, right.

Barack Obama was raised by a single mother who woke him every day by 5:00 AM to study before he went to school. He played sports in high school, but never at the cost of his academic achievement.

He went to Columbia University on a scholarship, and graduated FIRST in his class from Harvard Law. He was the first black President of the Harvard Law Review.

He practiced as a Civil Rights attorney, worked as a community organizer and taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago. He served three terms in the Illinois Senate before winning election to the United States Senate.

But all of this is just deep, deep cover for his diabolical scheme to achieve the Presidency of the United States and enslave all whites as payback.

"Black liberation theology?" How pathetic. Try researching Obama's background, and you'll find that he is an exceptional individual, and may turn out to be the finest President this country has ever had.

I see you have read everything Obama would have like for you to read and nothing else, good for you. You will be very disappointed in a couple of years if Obama wins this election.

Living in northern Va. I've seen these Jeremiah Wright ads and they absolutely repulse me. They prove to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Republican party is willing to go down in flames culminating with the crash and burn tomorrow night. The party may just be beyond repair by Wednesday morning.

People will remember these ads for a looong time.

I work with the school bus system in my area with special needs children and I do get to talk with partent of children with problems that call for special needs program. In speaking with one mother today she told me she was about to lose her home. This was not a slacker or a non worker. This was from a family living in a $400,000 home that they built over 10 years ago especially designed for their wheelchair bound young wonderful daughter . They have worked hard both husband and wife to maintain a good life for their 4 children. Now the husbands' income is way down due to the collapse of the financial markets, the mothers' business , a spa, is losing money because of the poor economy and programs for her handicapped child have been cut due to tax cuts for the rich which were made up for by cutting programs for the needy or handicapped. They are on the verge of losing their home, their ability to provide good care for their child. Why---because of George Bush and the Republican Party and what they have done to the hard working citizens of this country. Lets pray that Nov.4th God will again smile on this country and provide us with the New President that will lead us out of these dark Republican conservative days and into the bright light of change. God give us OBAMA and hope again for the return of greatness to this land.

It's been sad to watch McCain degrade himself. At one time he might have made a great president. He's a casualty of "W" and it's unfortunate that his legacy will be this offensive campaign.

I would add a new one: a statement that Barack made about the cost of cleaning up coal fired plants, making it impossible for them to be built because of emissions requirement. I was born in Steubenvile, Ohio, right in the middle of coal fired steel mill country. My dad got us out of ther ASAP, when I was six months Old. The air was unbelievably smelly and dirty, not to mention unhealthy. Tonight the Weather Channel is running a program on there "How Weather Changed History" about a killer smog in Donora, Pennsylvania in 1948. I'd also Google the killer smog in London from coal fired plants. I think that was 1952. Things have impoved in a lot of areas, but you can still smell the sulpher 50-80- miles from Steubenville and your eyes start to burn, depending on the weather. The Weather Channell progam is on at 7 P.M. and 12 Midnight. mountain Standard Time. I won't even go into what it was like visiting my grandparents in Steubenville in the 50's and 60's.

Listening to McCain on what is hopefully his last political stump, I'm reminded of the screaming about patriotism and "real Americans" during the Viet Nam war. This man, who can't live enough in the present, let alone future, to learn how to e-mail someone reminds me of the division of that time and people who lived in the past of "glory" wars. Let's make it so he doesn't have to "fight, fight, fight" anymore "for" this country. Save us from the old soldiers who cannot give up their wars.

As unnerving as it may be - and perhaps it's about time we all got very unnerved - I"m inclined to think that McCain/Palin's is absolutely a campaign of our times: a reflection of a prevailing global culture. A kind of perfect manifestation of all the bigoted, evangelical, fear-mongering, power-crazed, dumb & dumber, unilateral ideals, tactics, schemes and bare-faced lies over the past 8 years, with Palin as it"s most perfect American incarnation.
America may have voted W Bush in twice, but many governments have stood by his administration unconditionally and many other parties, like the Jihadists, have subjected us to the very same version of leadership and rule. Is it any wonder some people think this kind of campaigning is perfectly legitimate? We all got here together.

I agree with you on this and I voted for Bush twice. I am fiscally conservative and ashamed of the tactics of the extreme right. The christian base is as dangerous as any other radical religious zealots. They have driven a wedge in our country to win at any cost. For what? Country first?

One cause ... Supreme Court Seats. We need smart pragmatic leaders right and left right now.

Sanya, you said it well. It seems that the conservative mantra is "I got mine. I want more. Everyone else be damned." How we change this attitude is unclear. It seems the Christian (and all other religions') call to love thy neighbor is now called socialism, and therefore unAmerican. We really need the inspiring leadership of Obama.

I am a fifty-something white female, and have been a registered Republican all of my life. I voted for Nixon, I voted for Reagan, and I voted for the elder Bush. I disagree with the Party on abortion, but agree that government needs to cut waste and increase efficiency.

Then, in 1998, the Republican Party jettisoned every shred of honesty and integrity it ever had, and reinvented itself as an elitist gang of muck rakin", vote fixin", mud slingin", insider tradin", election stealin", lobbyist lovin", bribe takin", church goin" hypocrites.

The Republican Party has become the political equivalent of the Jerry Springer show: vile, sleazy and detestable.

This charge straight down the metaphorical toilet began with the impeachment of Bill Clinton, and (hopefully) will end with the election of Barack Obama and a Democratic majority in both houses. Then, maybe we can get something done for a change.

I originally supported Hillary Clinton, but have been won over by Barack"s obvious intelligence, honesty, and dedication. He is an inspiring and charismatic leader, and I think he is absolutely what our country needs at this moment.

He has done what he set out to do with his campaign; he has restored our hope for a better future and a better country. I believe that he will return integrity to our government, and to the political process. Ultimately, I think that he will unite us.

Tomorrow, we have the chance to regain Camelot. VOTE!!!

Young or old, healthy or not, be prepared to wait.
One suggestion, prepare yourself for long lines at the polls:

Bring a folding chair, a good book and a bunch of snacks, and try to enjoy the wait.

Go with friends, have a party! Send out for pizza. The long lines don't have to discourage voters, we just need to go prepared for a wait.

How is it possible that the majority of the greed partisans on these threads (e.g. the miserable, intellectually challenged "JTP", McCain's new chum) call themselves "Christian" and at the same time slander Obama with an epithet of "socialism" (of course, they don't know the meaning of the word), only because he cares for the victims of the desastrous greed results, for the middle class, and for those who are less fortunate - and less clever to suck the money out of the pockets of their compatriots? Really Christian! I am proud to be an atheist, and independent of the institutionalized hypocrisy immanent in this religion.

Excellent point. How can you claim to be a christian and NOT support social programs?

Well, granted, my personal feeling is that anyone who professes a belief in a deity is tacitly admitting their lack of intelligence--or refusal to use it.

But still.

I dunno about that, I personally believe in a deity but that doesn't absolve me of the responsibility to practice good dhamma with all around me.

Good dhamma, incidentally, is most Christ-like. Being a selfish a-hole who sides with the Pharisees and moneylenders of our time is not.

No matter if Obama wins or not, will we never be able to unite under just one leader? Will we ever find the Perfect Leader, or the Perfect Leadership Style? These questions are also discussed in this film that I' found:

Today I stood in line at a charity free dinner line at a Catholic Church in Anaheim, California (Home of Disneyland)...and noted my fellow "diners" ..many of whom were homeless Veterans and "newly homeless" from the mortgage meltdown. They were all scared--but many told me also they were angry because they couldn't vote in this Election because the Homeless can't vote.(the only other American's who can't vote are convicted felons) . So I said I would take their message to the Internet for them..and post it here where the best people come to post about the Real World.

I'm not homeless, yet...but the thought of so many who were, and who had lost their privilege to vote because of Businesses' Corporate Greed, and so Big Exec's could suck up our money for their $25 million dollar Golden Parachutes while other American's curled up in doorways under cardboard boxes at night trying to find a warm spot ...was truly sickening to me.

If you haven't voted yet, please VOTE your conscience, not your Party, and remember ... to Vote is a your Right as a Citizen ... .your way of saying Ok, you have my confidence... please do right by me... and when you have an extra dollar or pocket change, remember America's Homeless and Open your Hearts.

Thanks for doing this.
Just because a person finds themselves in such a state, does not make them less a person or less a citizen. Maybe we could appeal directly to the "Mavericks" in this election to champion their cause? They seem to care a lot about plumbers, bakers, chocolate makers, waitresses and janitors - why not homeless?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:55 AM on 11/03/2008

The homeless most certainly can vote! Please talk to somebody at the church and find out if it is still possible for them to be registered. In some jurisdictions, the homless can use the address of a shelter as their place of residence. I heard that it is even possible to use a park bench as an address if that is where you typically can be found. Above all, do not be discouraged from voting if you have a right to!

Yup and even more horrifying is this "partnership" entered into by Bush:

READ THIS THEN!!

http://www.nauwarroom.org/index.php/spp

THE SPP IS A BACK-DOOR AGREEMENT TO SUPERSEDE THE U.S. CONSTITUTION

Apologists for the Security and Prosperity Partnership like to dismiss critics by claiming that it merely enhances economic and security cooperation among the three nations. But even a quick review of the specific working agenda initiatives shows that the SPP is an incremental step on the road to a "North American Union."

This clear progression towards the NAU is hidden behind innocent sounding phases such as "our three countries signed a Framework of Common Principles " or "we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding ," or "we have signed a Declaration of Intent," etc. But the SPP has the potential to forever change life in North America for all three participants. None of the approximately 30 working agendas makes any mention of submitting decisions to the U.S. Congress for review and approval.

The evident plan is to knit together the North American Union completely under the radar, through a process of regulations and directives issued by various U.S. government agencies.
