Pro-McCain Outside Groups Spent $33.4 Million In Last Two Weeks

After being outspent for months, Republicans poured money into advertising in the final two weeks of the election, in hopes of countering the record fundraising by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

Independent groups that supported Sen. John McCain's presidential bid by airing ads or canvassing for votes dramatically increased their spending, surpassing the lead that groups supporting Mr. Obama once held.

Shouldn't the headline read "Anti-Obama Outside Groups"? They aren't making the case for McCain, like McCain himself, they are slimming Obama - trying to tell us why NOT to vote for him. These tactics haven't worked yet this election cycle - why would they work now? To persuade undecideds? I doubt it - they wouldn't still be undecided if the smearing had worked. McCain is a sad, angry old man; and he has no one but himself to blame.

I think their advertising is hurting Republican chances both in this election and in elections to come - for years, if not decades.

The last thing a political Party should do is spend tens of millions of dollars pounding home the message that they have so little to offer that they must resort to innuendo and insinuation - and, too often, bald-faced lies.

McCain has absolutely nothing constructive to say about how he would resolve the economic crisis, so he resorts to character assassination in order to keep his name in the news. And as his credibility as a viable candidate plummets, he becomes more and more desperate and irrational. Meanwhile, Palin is more than happy to do his bidding. Since she lacks a conscience, she has no reservations about piling on the slime.

However, the polls tell the tale. Their campaign has become a joke, Palin is a caricature and fodder for late night comedy acts, and McCain has reduced himself to a bitter, old man with nothing but vitriol to offer the American people. How sad...
