Between the election and the economy, Americans are a little emotional these days. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the faces of Obama supporters at rallies. On the eve of the election, there's excitement, as evidenced in Friday's "O-Bama Faces" slideshow, and there's exhaustion. And sometimes there's just crying.

And now, with the death of Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham, emotions are running even higher for the Democratic candidate.

The goodness in all of our hearts will not be hidden any longer. This is not any longer a center-right country, it is a collection of people - living, breathing people - who have one goal: to get rid of those who spread hate. Whether internally with this wedge politics of exclusion and lies and feeding on our feers and insecurities, or externally by spreading war and famine and suicide bombing. Enough already of this incarnate evil of the soul.

We are waking up and joining the rest of the world in our utter disgust of those who would separate us one from the other, and those religious zealots who would subjugate us in the chains of hatred and bigotry and ignorance of those unlike us.

Being part of the human race is something once again to be cherished.

I'm not sure who put this show together? I wish it had more caucasian people crying because every person I know cried. Then I listen to the radio and every caller, host, and guest says they cried.

Looking at this very moving slide show brings to mind yet again (as it has come up in my mind numerous times in the past couple of days) the closing words of Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address:

"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

By his words and presence, Barack Obama is inspiring the BETTER ANGELS OF OUR COUNTRY'S NATURE to wake up after a long, long slumber.

Now I'M puddling up...

Tears for Barack
By Ron Iverson
November 4, 2008

Dare we feel into Jesse’s flood?
A people’s pain, relieved.
Blood, sweat and tears, justified.
A nation’s shame, redeemed.
A heart fortified by selfless empathy, flowing.

Is there a message in Oprah’s misty eyes?
A complex of opposites, comingling.
The wholeness of a healed heart, effulgent.
A soul aching for the ideal, satisfied.
Transcendence in a glistening wetness, embodied.

Did Barack’s oratory yield to lids brimming?
Strength with vulnerability, undiminished.
A target for a nation’s love, accepted.
A calling deeper than us, heeded.
Gratitude for the Present Moment, shared.

I am still pinching myself. A president like this only comes along once-in-a-lifetime, it seems. Obama has raised the bar on the highest office in the land. We can only pray to have future leaders who can inspire us and fill us with hope the way this wonderful man has.

This shows how hungry this country has been for a positive message of hope. The final picture shows us the humanity of our newly elected commander in chief.
