Barack Obama racked up a decisive victory Tuesday crushing John McCain in almost every battleground state. On January 20, he will become the nation's first black chief executive.

Exit poll data show Obama beating McCain by an overwhelming 57-41 margin among women, and carrying men by four points, 51-47. Obama is positioned to become the first Democrat since Jimmy Carter in 1976 to win break 50 percent of the popular vote, something Bill Clinton failed to do in both 1992 and 1996.

Among the key battleground states called by the networks by 10 pm, Pennsylvania went for Obama 55-45; New Hampshire 55-43; and Ohio 53-46:

While not among the early network calls, exit polls in Virginia -- which has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964 -- showed Obama ahead 54-45; Indiana, once considered a Republican bastion, appeared to be solidly in Obama's camp, with women backing him 55-44 and men split 49-49.

Nationwide, according to network exit polls, Obama did far better among whites that his recent Democratic predecessors. Kerry lost white men to George W. Bush 62-37, a 25 point spread; Obama lost white men by 14 points, 42-56. Similarly, Kerry lost white women by 9 points, Obama by 5.

While all white voters over the age of 30 cast majorities for McCain, those under 30 backed Obama by a decisive 57-41 margin.

Obama, like other Democrats, continued to have difficulty winning the support of less affluent whites. Among whites with incomes of $50,000 or less, Obama lost by a slight margin, 48-50. Among whites without college degrees, Obama lost decisively to McCain, 41-58. Whites with college degrees were split, 49-50.

While Kerry won black voters 88 to 11 while Obama won among blacks 96-3. The exit poll data suggested a significant increase in the black turnout, which rose from 11 percent of the total to 13 percent. These figures may underestimate the increase because they do not include early voting which was very popular among African Americans this year.

McCain received a big initial boost after he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate, but by election day she had become an lead weight. By a margin of 60-38 voters said she was not qualified to be president.

Democrats who had backed Hillary Clinton during the primaries backed Obama 85 to 15.

What has become known as the "marriage gap" played a huge role in the outcome. Obama won single voters by a landslide 66-32, while McCain edged out Obama among married voters, 51-47. Working women were another key source of support for Obama, backing him 61-38, while non-working women were almost evenly divided, 50 for Obama, 48 for McCain.

Young voters under 30 backed Obama by better than two to one, 68-30, compared to a much more modest 54-45 win among this age group for Kerry.

Obama beat McCain in every income group from the very poor with family incomes of $15,000 or less, 73-25, to those making over $200,000, 53-45.

2008-11-05-Picture161.png

McCain's support among Christian conservatives dropped slightly below recent levels of support for Republican candidates. In 2004, white, born again evangelicals backed Bush over Kerry by a 78-21 margin. These voters backed McCain 73-25.

In addition to performing far better among whites, Obama improved significantly on recent Democratic margins among rural voters. In 2004, Kerry lost this constituency 59-40, or 19 points. Obama also lost, but only by 4 points, 47-51.

Reading about the Obama team's relationship with the "net roots" and his broadband advocacy, I decided to plot broadband penetration against Obama vote % and Obama % - McCain %. I did this with state data. Some correlation seems likely and the outliers make sense. See my Word face-Off blog. Seems to me that for electoral purposes alone, he should make broadband a priority. Of course, he sees it as an integral part of our economic infrastructure, an area where we are running behind much of the developed world.

Produce a real birth certificate with the name of the hospital, attending physician, and a race, not a continient, for his father, in 1961 language. You know, one that looks like all of ours.

To all of you that see color before character:

Obama won on the content of his character. I voted for him because I see a man that will provide LEADERSHIP. That's something that W didn't even know how to spell.

Question? What did Paul do with all the money he raised (and can keep). At best I'd see a lawn sign at an intersection now and then.

Fortunately there are quite a few American Politicians with the above prerequisites of a good sound electoral mandate.
However, POLTRICKS may have taken them off front page news. NO PROBLEM!
The people will decide when the right time comes and the conductor (Electorate 2008) will decide who is who and what is what by stopping the train so that passengers with no valid tickets can get off the train and be given a SECOND CHANCE to get a valid for ELECTION 2012!!!!. Errol Smythe.

One should never say "never" in politics. However, The Dear Leader's victory almost certainly means that neither Hillary Clinton nor Al Gore will ever be president of the United States. Well at least we have that going for us.

Will a caucasian ever again be nominated for president in the democratic party? Just asking. I don't see how any white candidate can beat a moderate African-American candidate in the democratic primaries. The solid black vote carried Obama to the nomination and that vote is there for any black candidate (e.g., Jesse Jackson in 1988). I think Obama proved that a million times over when he beat a much more experienced and very liberal Hillary Clinton. It'll be interesting to see what happens in 2016 and who ultimately emerges as the dems candidate. My early guess is Deval Patrick if he can get his act together in MA.

The most depressed politician in America today....Hillary Clinton. Had she won the unlosable nomination she would be the president elect.

Justice will one day prevail for Human Rights in this land unless secessionist christian evangelists try to take over, again....

In the meantime those of us lucky to have long-terrm relationships are screwed in the rights department in most states but that's that for now....unless you are in Connecticut Or Massachucetts where all is well in this regard

I don't like Obama, but I agree with you 100%. These anti-gay propositions suck. Here's hoping the California Supreme Court will rule the proposition unconstitutional. Sad thing is Obama doesn'st support gay marriage either. What is wrong with politicians on this issue? Good luck nyc11, really.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:26 PM on 11/05/2008

I don't disagree with gay people being allowed to be married, but it's not the job of the government to mandate that. There is a reason there is supposed to be a seperation between church and state, and marriage is a religious union.
It's for religious people to encourage their sects to approve of those unions and overturn any law unconstitutionally passed to ban it or giving government authority to have any say in the matter.
Civil Unions should also give the exact same rights as you get through marriage due to that being the right of free people to choose who they bind into a relationship contract.

Christians cannot and should not support anything that the Bible considers blasphomy, however, it is no problem in supporting the Civil Union. The Bible says that homosexuality is wrong, and noone is supposed to waste their seed because humans were made sexual by God so that we could procreate. The fact that in secular opinions it is okay, does fly in the face of what a Christian is instructed to do by the the word. Check your Bible for that information.

I heard that Bush had already decided to share briefings and such with President Elect Obama already. No doubt he will try to be consilatory in the face of possible congressional hearings regarding his crimes and misdamenors while in office. Impreachment is still on the table for Bush, Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld and possibly others who went along with this charade! I think Rangel and Lewis filed with the Justice Department so expect some Congressional Hearings really soon!

barbwiregrrl
That is the reason why currently marraiges in MA or CA are not recognized nationwide. Until DOMA is gone my marrige is limited to the two states.
I think it sucks but that is what it is for right now.

.
There have been no cases reach the appellate level yet. Connecticut marriages will begin November 12, Massachusetts just changed the law to allow out of state residents to marry there.

Only after someone who marries in Connecticut or Massachusetts is denied the right to have their marriage recognized in another state, will the cases go to court.

DOMA was enacted before the actions in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Until now there has not been the possibility to challenge DOMA. DOMA can now be challenged. Will take a while for it to work its way through the lower courts.

DOMA means bupkus.

Right and with the current US SUpreme Court none of us are willing to risk a case going from Appellate level.

IT has been a political decision to not risk going before the current courts. That is why we have not challenged. I am all for challenging it but I want O to keep his word too and get rid of DOMA.

I agree with you. It will depend on which circuit the case is filed in.

This is one of those cases that is going to take several years.

There will be setbacks along the way. I view the California vote as a setback and not the end.

Don't try it in Texas, it will never work for you.

I have no problem with gay people being together, but they really need to come up with something other than calling it "marriage", it will never fly with Americans, even California Liberals voted it down...

Maybe in 75 to 100 years, gay marriage will happen, until then, enjoy your life, and don't fret, no one can tell you who you can love...good luck.

I believe Chris Rock had it right, Why should Gays and Lesbians be denied the right to be miserable (I paraphrase). the problem with people who think as you do is that the word "marriage" is a legal term and a religious one. If a church denies the right of marriage to gays that is one thing, when the state does it, it is denial of equal rights. Your "not having a problem" is immaterial. This is a human rights issue.

You don't even know what it said, do you? Prop 8 was in favor of the ban. If California Liberals had voted it DOWN, you would be very upset.

What actually happened is that California conservatives got more than $20 million from Utah Mormons, and bought themselves a YES.

Here's another prediction for you, peggy. California will overturn Prop 8 on the next election - if it doesn't get it done in the courts first. (You'll notice that we voted down a Prop trying to require parantal notification for abortion, which has now failed 3 times in California.)

Gay marriage will happen in my lifetime (I don't know how old or healthy you are), and it will be called marriage, because this country has already learned that "separate but equal" doesn't work.

The only threat that was ever even investigated was at the Sarah Palin rally, when a camera man heard someone yell" k i l l him, no one else, including secret service agents standing right there, heard it, and so the FBI has concluded that the camera man said it....NO ONE ELSE heard it..so these threats are more s p i n from the libs...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:26 PM on 11/05/2008

Of course there were threats on Obama, there are many people who are still very racist in this country, just check with folks in the South on that! The thing was that the Secret Service chose not to report what they were doing which is normal because one cannot give away information or evidence if you will concerning an attempted assassination or plans for one until after it has been investigated and stopped. It would have served no purpose to allow the candidates to learn of that information unless they were in grave danger or involved in a conspiracy to be harmed. If it was that way O would have been briefed and moved to a safe location, etc. When I was involved with the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's we all knew that threats were around and all, MLK,Jr knew he was being threatened and watched by the FBI and every other agency all the time. Coretta was watched too. Getting hurt is always in the back of someone's mind, tbut he work must be accomplished and takes precedence, one must trust that the good will protect them from the bad along with the grace of God. Obama understands that just as we did as teenagers registering people to vote all over the South, during the marches and demonstrations in Chicago, etc.
